Behind the royal palace lay his mother's tombstone, resting among the former Empresses of the Holy Flood Empire. A few paces away, pristine monuments rose straight and tall, flanked by offerings of fresh fruit and unblemished by a single scratch. Such was the unchanging reverence of the graveyard.

Their pristine condition stood in cruel contrast to the stone directly before him. This monument looked flayed. Harsh sword gouges scarred its body, where the once-sharp calligraphic strokes of his mother's name had been violently smeared and broken by cold steel.

It perfectly mirrored his emotions.
