My eyes widened with shock? Fear? Trepidation? I wasn't sure, but my heart pounded so fast I was sure it cracked my sternum. My body was crumbling into grains of sand and I struggled to keep myself together.
'Renaud. Is he here? Was he among them?' I closed my eyes and clutched my chest. It was a good thing I was already on the floor, so no one suspected me. Taking slow deep breaths I tried my best to calm my racing heart.
Steadying my legs, I stood to my feet and glanced around at the half naked men. Searching from face to face, I finally recognized Sir Uryenne. Now that I could see him clearly in the flickering light from the fire, I noticed his dark tousled hair that draped over his emaciated face. He looked so skinny his cheeks had sunken in and his ribs protruded so much they had a dark shadow underneath each one. Scanning each face, all the men were in the same state as Sir Uryenne. They were all malnourished with dark bags under their eyes, but Renaud wasn't among them.
