I couldn't quite relate to everything they were saying. I wasn't exactly "from their time" in the way they thought—I was a man of the apocalypse, a soldier who had lived through a previous cycle of hell. But the idea that a subculture of gamers had turned a city into a high-level raiding guild was fascinating.

"Of course!" Lilith said with absolute confidence. "We played games for most of our lives. Those games always had harsh scenarios and poor environments where people had to survive using nothing but their skills and abilities. We just applied the meta to reality."

"Playing games saved my life," Will admitted, his voice softening just a fraction. "Saved all of our lives."

"Good," I said, deciding to bring this meaningless talk to an abrupt close. I had established who they were, but I didn't have time to indulge in a trip down memory lane about video games.
