Once the floating island was reached, Jake and Owen removed the diving equipment other than the wetsuits and left them a little ways up on the shore of the island. They made sure the spot they left their equipment was far up enough to no be swept away by a high wave if one were to sweep the shore.
Taking the lead on exploring the island, Jake scanned every new plant along the way in order to keep the entries in the data pad in case one of them was somehow able to be used to make a material they need in the future.
Steadily making his way to the Multipurpose rooms that the surviving Degasi crew had built, Owen was following behind him while being on guard with a survival knife since they were limited in what they could bring to the island.
Upon sight of the Degasi crew's base, Jake motioned for Owen to get down and then pointed at the Cave Crawlers, it was at this point that Jake seemed to realize that there hadn't been any Cave Crawlers on the Aurora. Looking around, Jake found a large rock weighing around 20 kilograms and picked it up.
Holding it in his right hand, he attached his scanner to the waterproof belt he had around his waist and started sneaking towards the Cave Crawlers. Even though he didn't know how, Jake realized that the Cave Crawlers had spotted him, and started coming towards him.
Abandoning stealth as it seemed to never work, Jake took aim at the first Cave Crawler and threw the rock, which then proceeded to hit the enemy dead on and explode it as if it was hit by a cannonball.
Three other Cave Crawlers were still headed his way, so he charged forward and grabbed one before it could do anything to him. Gripping one of it's appendages in his hand, Jake then used the Cave Crawler like a flail and smashed the other two into pieces.
For good measure he also found a larger rock that weighed 50 kilograms and smashed them repeatedly. After completing his task of demolishing the Cave Crawlers, he waved Owen to come over and they started investigating the base.
Upon entering the base, Owen immediately noticed the light coming from the PDA on the floor as well as the strange purple tablet and upon picking it up he started playing the message. It was Paul Torgal's log, the first one, labeled as Marooned. Owen had heard of Paul Torgal before in the report on the Dagasi crew.
While listening to the first PDA, both of the men kept looking around and found the other two PDA's inside the abandoned base. Jake kept glancing at the purple tablet as he knew what it was and what it was used for.
He also knew where the other three PDAs on the island were, as well as the four in the Grand Reef base.
"There is still more to explore on this island, as we need to go to that base up on the peak of the mountain. There might be another PDA up there. We can also take this tablet back for investigation when we go back to the base and meet up with the others."
Once they finished listening to the three PDAs, Jake had said this as he had been waiting outside the entire time, as it would be a little cramped for him to go into the base. He was also watching to make sure no more cave crawlers showed up and tried to attack them, the little bastards.
"Agreed, I remember seeing another PDA just sitting in an archway type of rock formation as well as a smaller base upon my previous arrival on this island when you first found me. At that time I didn't bother to go and explore the base or pick up the PDA as I was still shocked by what was happening.
While we were also swimming away from the island, I'm still unsure, but I think I saw another base down off the south/southwest shoreline."
Looking at Owen strangely, Jake wondered how he had managed to see the Grand Reef Base. Even though it could still potentially be seen from the surface, he didn't think Owen would have been able to spot it.
"We will check out the other two bases on the island first and then go check on the underwater base. I will swim down and see if there are anymore PDAs down there as I have an easier time swimming. You can wait on the shore for me."
Making the hike up the mountain to the base up there, Jake took in the view of everything as he marveled at just how wonderful nature can be. On an entirely different planet, with different life forms and ecosystems, it was still just as beautiful.
Collecting and listening to the other PDAs on the island was uneventful, other than dispatching of more Cave Crawlers, so Jake and Owen head down to the shore to get ready. Jake was the one who was actually getting ready while Owen just watched and was going to wait for him to come back.
"Good luck down there, don't die. I highly doubt we can make it off this planet without you." Patting his arm, as that's the highest place he could reach, Owen watched as Jake just nodded in affirmation and then dove into the water.
Taking a running start and diving into the water Jake could get to the base with his eyes closed solely based on just how many times he would go there during his play-throughs.
Looking at the ancient floaters as he was diving down, he marvelled at nature and how amazing it was. Focusing on swimming down, Jake was getting suspicious at how smoothly it was going snd he thought his luck might've changed for the better.
However it wasn't going to be as smooth sailing as he thought it would be, as an all too familiar type of aggressive sea creature decided make another appearance.
It was the arrow-headed eel that had attacked Berkeley and Yu. It's not the same one that had been encountered before, as that one probably was killed and eaten by some other sea creature.
A creature that was injured and releasing that much blood without a way to heal quickly or stop the bleeding would then be stalked by other creatures.
The arrow-headed eel was trying to use it's natural camouflage to try and sneak up in Jake, but it didn't work. Jake was able to see it bright as day because of the purple rings on its body.
He didn't know if maybe the main fish that the arrow-headed eel preyed upon couldn't see purple or if there was another reason behind the rings on it's body. They just didn't have the desired effect on Jake.
Seemingly having noticed that Jake was watching it, the eel abandoned the stealthy approach and went for a head on charge. Trying to wrap it's body around Jake, the eel found out that it couldn't constrict around this creature.
As it was trying to constrict Jake, the eel felt a sharp pain that caused it to release the prey it had and starting writhing in pain. Jake was using his fingernails to tear into the eel's flesh and rip chunks off.
However, while he was dealing with the eel that had attacked him, he didn't notice that there was another eel trying to flank him, in which it was succeeding in it's effort to do so.
Increasing it's speed to the limit that it's body can muster at this moment, the Arrowheaded eel tried to pierce Jake through the left side of his body. Just before it was able to though, it received a slow but strong backhand to the face.
With the backhand to the face, the direction of the charge was deflected further left and cleared Jake's body. The other eel was not unscathed, as the one that charged at Jake was deflected in such a away that it pierced the body of the first eel.
By some kind of sheer luck, or remarkable planning on Jake's part, the eel hit the spot where Jake had torn off the most flesh from the first one.
The first eel was then bisected into a 7 metre long piece and a 3 metre long piece. Writhing in unimaginable pain, the eel was rapidly bleeding out and weakening due to the loss of blood and that it lost almost half it's body.
Seeing it's partner in the ambush in such agony, the other eel was hesitant but still aggressive, and so it rushed towards Jake again.
Trying the same thing the first one had tried, the eel tried to constrict Jake, but this time it was working. It was working because it started constricting him in a different way than the first one did.
The first one just tried to constrict Jake by coiling around him, like if you were to go around and around someone while holding a rope.
As for the second one, it wrapped around his left arm, went across his chest, wrapped his right arm, went along his back and started trying to bend Jake's arms back behind him.
It was working because Jake was still sinking deeper in the water, and the pressure around him was increasing. Watching the light from the surface get increasingly dimmer, Jake started remembering what happened after the plane crashed.
Saving the child, being injected with the paralytic drug, sinking deeper into the water and watching the light from the sun fade away.
Trying to reach his hand towards the light, Jake was sad, incredibly sad, he'd never get to see his parents again, never get to read avatar again, never fight again, never ride a motorcycle, never fall in love.
Missing out on everything life had to offer, whether it be joys, sorrows, relationships, or anything else someone could think of. Preparing to accept his fate, Jake decided he might as well die while doing what he loved.
Starting to perform moves from the water-bending style while underwater, he wanted to calm his mind and die in peace. The other survivors had received enough help from him and could make it off the planet themselves if they explored and followed the clues.
Suddeny, as he was performing the Northern Water-tribe's bending style, Jake felt some like a connection to the water around him, like he could push it away from him or pull it towards him.
Widening his eyes, Jake felt a surge of adrenaline and euphoria at the realization of what he is doing. Increased adrenaline secretion caused his brain to release the inhibitor holding back the amount of muscle percentage used in his actions.
Struggling greatly, Jake tried to do what he has seen countless times in Avatar. Trying to make a blade out of ice while restricted, he successfully did one while still trying to keep his mind a little calmer even with his excited state.
On his first try at trying to make an ice blade, he succeeded, and he launched it towards the head of the eel. Moving faster through the water than through air, the blade lodged itself in the head of the eel.
Unwrapping itself from Jake, the eel started spasming while trying to swim away, but it was swimming erratically. Almost as if it lost control of parts of it's body, the eel's way of swimming was like only half of it's body was able to move.
"30 seconds of oxygen remaining."
The voice of the PDA sounded in Jake's ear at this time as he was at around a 250 metre depth. Realizing he might not make it to the surface in time, he started trying to use bending again, but he only wastes five seconds before giving up and trying to swim.
For some reason he wasn't able to bend now, even though he was actively trying and concentrating on trying to do so.
"Warning! Oxygen!"
As he was still at a depth of 100 metres another alert rang out, causing him to start to panic slightly as he was no longer ready to die.
A brighter light then shown down onto his face as he was swimming towards the surface. Squinting his eyes, Jake saw that Owen was swimming down towards him with a sea glide.
Arriving beside Jake, Owen gave him a short rope he had tied around his waist to hold onto and then turned towards the surface while using the sea glide and paddling with his feet.
Taking a deep breath and holding it, Jake kept paddling his feet while being dragged upwards. Watching as the surface was getting closer and closer, he let out his breath and kept paddling while his chested started to ache from the want of air.
(AN. It's me again! I'm back for now. Hopefully I can keep up writing as I like writing. This is making me research things and think of cool things that I might've never thought of before. I am going to expand on some things in the next chapter, just keep in mind this is a futuristic universe with unseen, at least to my eyes so far, technology. Exciting chapter too since Jake just learned that he can waterbend. As for the not updating the chapters more, I would like to sincerely apologize. My only excuse(s) can be laziness. My last chapter was when I was taking classes in march-May. After that I started having more work and doing stuff at home, in July I bought a new car as my truck is a gas gazzler and got a girlfriend! Which I'm happy and very excited about, today was the three month anniversary, but I'm stuck working in a camp for 10 day shifts at a time away from home and from her. In august I then proceeded to cause the engine to knock as I didn't investigate the check engine light more thoroughly and cause I was misled. It ran out of oil, and I should have been checking as it was a Subaru. Anyway, I replaced the engine last weekend and swapped the heads over from the engine that was knocking to the new donor engine as they were in better condition and it runs fine now. But enough of that I only started writing some more after dinner each day at camp as I didn't want to just lay here in bed. My laziness is because I've started doomscrolling and only stop because, I don't know why I end up going off instagram and looking at reels when I could be writing or doing other more productive things. Even at home I still end up doomscrolling due to boredom when there is lots to do. Writing is more fun and I love it. This is kinda like a life update and stuff. Thank you for reading my fanfic that I'm writing about Subnautica and I hope you continue to enjoy it in the future. Please leave a comment about any grammar/spelling mistakes that I have missed. Also leave a comment if for names that the Arrowheaded eel could be named, as Arrowheaded eel is kinda boring. I will see if I can do some concept are this weekend.
