Chapter 827 - Chapter 806 ( Survivors - II )

When he appeared in the room, Kyo saw how a small group of children were hiding behind some rocks, looking apprehensively at the newcomer. In front of them was some kind of black cat with horns sticking out of its head and a long tail ending in an arrowhead, proving that this Vic, was none other than a Cat Demon, and a rather old one at that.

"Who are you?" - Vic asked seriously as he prepared to fight, and though he was still injured and tired, he wasn't going to let this stranger hurt the children so easily.

"I'm sorry for showing up so suddenly, my name is Kyo and I've come to investigate the rumour that a certain person came through here" - Kyo said seriously as he looked around - "Other than that, I don't plan on hurting a group of innocent children, even if they are of the demon race"

The children looked at each other, then looked carefully at the leader of their group.

Vic frowned slightly, but he could sense the honesty in this man's words, which meant he wasn't lying, it was either that, or he was far more dangerous than he thought.

"You mean that human?" - Vic asked after some more thought - "Brown hair, slightly muscular build and uses a strange black sword?"

Kyo's expression changed as the children began to sob.

Vic quickly changed his expression because he knew he had spoken too much, not because he wanted to hide the truth about the person who had attacked them, but because the children were still scared of this man.

"Yes, him, though I'd like to talk to you privately after we've made sure the children are safe," Kyo said after some thought.

"Safe?" - Vic repeated in surprise, though he quickly frowned because this was too good to be true, especially the fact that a rabbit man was trying to help them, after all, he had heard how the demon army had proved successful in their conquest in Verbergen - "Why do you want to help us?"

"That's a good question, and the reason is simple, we, the Haulia clan, are not affiliated with Verbergen for different reasons, so even though we helped their evacuation, we don't feel much hatred for the demons" - Kyo answered as he shook his head - "Not counting that they are children, we can't just ignore them, even with the hostility between our races"

Vic frowned slightly before he started to think - "Let's make a deal, I'll tell you everything I know about that human, and in return I want you to promise that these children will be safe, at least until they are old enough and skilled enough to survive on their own."

"I promise" - Kyo didn't even hesitate when he answered the demon cat's request.

Vic was surprised, though he quickly nodded.

"Wait, I want you to give me some time so I can contact my companions and warn them of the situation" - Kyo said as he looked at the cat - "And if you feel worried, you can be present when I do".

"Kids, I'm going out for a minute, I'll be back with this gentleman" - Vic said as he looked at the kids with a smile - "You can eat whatever you want, we'll be out soon."

"Yay!" - exclaimed the children as they ran to some compartments and pulled out the best food.

Vic let out a sigh at how easily the kids had been happy, though he quickly shook his head, after all, it was better that they had a small moment of happiness before things got worse.

"Hey, boss," Kyo said after pulling out a strange stone.

Vic looked at it in wonder, more so when he heard a voice come out of the strange artifact.

[Kyo, it's good to hear you're alright, with all the time we hadn't received any information from you, we thought you had fallen into a trap.]

"Heh! Like that's happening to me, I'm a pro, boss" - Kyo replied with a huge smile, though his expression quickly changed to a serious one - "Boss, I managed to find the source of the voice, it was a group of kids, about 20 untrained civilians, scared and melancholic."

[A group of children? Hmm, we hypothesised that was the case because of the size of the hole, although we didn't rule out that there were some adults among them].

"The caretaker of the group was a demon cat named Vic" - Kyo added seriously - "We came to an agreement, he'll tell us all the information the traitorous hero knows and we'll help him get the children to safety."

[Well, we were going to do it anyway, so this is good news for us.]

"You were going to do it?" - Vic repeated in surprise because he couldn't believe what he had heard.

[I want to assume that voice is Vic?]

"Yes, boss, he's the children's caretaker" - replied Kyo seriously.

[I understand... hello, Vic, my name is Ben and I am the leader of this squad, as my subordinate must have told you, we are not here to harm them].

"Hello, my lord" - Vic replied with a self-conscious look on his face, mostly because he didn't know what to do now that they were "safe".

[I want you to give us at least an hour, so that we can give the corpses of the villagers a decent burial, so that the emotional shock to the children will be much less than seeing the lifeless bodies of their parents in the ground].

Vic was silent before nodding - "I understand, I'll try to entertain the children for an hour, I mean, I don't think that will be that hard."

[Kyo, your job now will be to help distract the kids and protect them until I tell them to get out]

"Whatever you say, boss!" - Kyo exclaimed firmly as he listened to the communication being cut off - "Ok, I guess it's our turn to entertain the kids now."

* * *

An hour later, the group of kids were cautiously climbing out of the hole, after Kyo was given the all clear to get out. They quickly looked around, only to scream and cry at the sight of their completely destroyed homes.

"Mummy!" - one boy exclaimed as he ran to his home, only to find ruins - "Daddy!"

"Mommy, brother!" - cried a little girl as she began to sob.

"Uncle!" - shouted another child as the other children didn't know what to do.

Their parents were nowhere to be found and their homes were destroyed.

Vic let out a sigh as he walked to the centre of the destroyed village, noticing how in the distance were hundreds of graves. His expression darkened even though he knew this would happen, but it wasn't as if anyone could blame him for feeling bad, he had been the protector of the children since he had come to this village wounded after losing his teacher.

The children also noticed these graves, and although they were still young, they understood what had happened, so they quickly ran in that direction.

The graves had no names on them, but they did have a personal item of the person buried, so the children quickly recognised their families and began to cry even harder.

Vic sighed again as he looked painfully at the children.

"Why, we didn't do anything wrong!" - shouted one boy, the one who was the oldest of the group - "We just live here in peace, we don't even care what happens to the humans or the other clans!"

The children began to scream and cry louder and louder as they felt their hatred for the humans growing rapidly.

"Children!" - Vic exclaimed as he gained the attention of the little demons - "It wasn't the humans that took everything from you!"

"What are you talking about Vic, it was the humans!" - Shouted the eldest of the group angrily,

"No, it wasn't all humans, it was only one human" - Vic replied seriously because he didn't want the children to feel hatred for all humans, after all, this could cause an untimely death, something he didn't want to see.

The boy frowned before gritting his teeth, though after a few seconds he nodded weakly.

Vic breathed a sigh of relief that for the first time, the fact that the demons matured quickly so that they could face the other clans was a good thing, and not just a procedure to get more warriors.

Yes, demons were a warrior race, that's why their biology prepared them to fight from a young age.

The demons were divided into two castes, the blood warriors and the shamans.

The blood warriors developed a growth in their intellect from the age of 8, as well as an accelerated increase in their metabolism to facilitate training.

Shamans developed their intellect from the age of 6, and their biology remained normal until they reached the age of 12, by which time their magical core was fully stabilised, which would drastically increase their basic biology.

Finally, there were certain demons who were called the "blessed" because they had the qualities of both castes, they were considered the elite of the demonic military force, and most of the time had control of a squadron.
