Alice vaguely sensed that Ada seemed to have noticed something, and couldn't help secretly admiring the secretary's quick reactions. Then she stopped beating around the bush and said, "Ada, Chester actually wasn't at the office last night, was he?"
"Um…"
"Tell me the truth. I just want to know Chester's whereabouts last night. I promise he'll never find out I called you."
"But Mr. Robinson really was at the office last night!"
"Really?" Alice smiled. "Ada, you should believe I'm capable of convincing Chester to fire an employee who isn't honest, right? Even if that employee has been working himself to the bone for him for years."
Ada instantly panicked. "Mrs. Robinson…"
Alice's voice softened. "All right, just tell me the truth. I promise I'm only asking about Chester's whereabouts, I'll never put you in a difficult spot in front of him."
