Victor Morgan had already hurt Vera once by leaving her for Sylvia Schuyler. She absolutely wasn't going to get hurt a second time, so she had to figure out what was going on in his head.
Ian Lockwood looked a little troubled, smiling wryly. "Vera, you've really stumped me with that question. I'm the kind of guy who's already heartbroken before even getting into a relationship. How would I understand any of this?"
It suddenly occurred to Vera that in all the years Ian Lockwood had been by her side, he'd never been in a relationship. In a way, she had held him back during the best years of his life.
Seeing her silent, Ian Lockwood added, "But I can answer your question from a man's perspective."
His words piqued Vera's interest, and she stared at him, eager to hear his answer.
Ian Lockwood gave her a gentle smile and sat right down on the sand. Vera followed his lead and sat down too. The sea breeze made her feel a little more relaxed.
