Hearing the familiar voice, Vera thought about how she had spent the last five years, and a wave of hatred washed over her. The man's tone, too, seemed to be a deliberate display of some kind.
"Brother Ron, did you take Chloe?"
The man Vera called "Brother Ron" was named Ron. He was a manager in a clandestine organization with over a hundred members under his command, controlling their every move.
Nearly all of Ron's subordinates were desperate people he had "saved," who were then screened and subjected to special training.
And Vera Warner was one of them. Years ago, it was Ron who had pulled her from a fiery blaze, forging her into the woman she was today.
Ron replied calmly, "I've told you before, Chloe has excellent aptitude. I'm going to take her in and put her through the most professional training. She will become our organization's most capable asset."
