Worried about Victor Morgan, Vera chased after him, forgetting she was in the middle of the road. But when she saw him embracing another woman, she froze on the spot.
The shriek of emergency brakes filled the air, and Victor Morgan spun around in terror. By the time Vera snapped out of her daze, it was too late. Just as the car was about to hit her, a figure suddenly rushed out from behind, wrapped his arms around her, and threw them both to the ground.
The truck then crashed into a utility pole with a deafening bang.
Vera looked at Ian Lockwood, who had cushioned her fall. Blood was streaming from his elbow and his face was scraped, but he was still helping her up, his voice fraught with worry. "Vera, are you okay? Are you scared? Are you hurt?"
Vera's eyes, however, were fixed on Victor Morgan across the street. He was still holding onto the other woman, engrossed in their conversation. He didn't walk over, nor did he even glance in her direction.
