The elves had always been reclusive and proud, offending many other races. The reason they had remained peaceful in this chaotic era was not only their own strength but mostly because they had hidden the world.
If they revealed their existence to the world, many troubles could be foreseen in the future.

The Elven king was clear-minded.
If they didn't ask for help now, the entire Elven race would soon be finished.
The future could be dealt with later.
At least surviving now meant there was a future.
