Chapter 38 - Chapter 36: The Tides Within

For three days, the lake did not move.

Not a ripple. Not a breeze across its surface. It reflected the sky perfectly now, too perfectly, like polished obsidian laid across the grounds. Students whispered that it looked fake. Painted. Held in place by invisible hands.

They weren't entirely wrong. Percy could still feel it. Only now, the pull wasn't external. It was internal.

He stood in the dormitory before dawn, staring at his reflection in the window. His eyes looked the same. His hands looked the same. But when he focused, really focused, he could feel currents under his skin. Slow, rhythmic, and vast.

He lifted a hand slightly. The water in the pitcher beside his bed trembled. Not violently, in greeting. Percy lowered his hand immediately. He didn't wake the others.

Hogwarts resumed classes, but tension hung thick in the corridors. Professors stood closer to students than usual. Defensive wards shimmered faintly along the outer grounds, barely visible in certain light.

Dumbledore had said little publicly. That worried Harry more than anything. In Charms, half the class accidentally overpowered simple spells. In Potions, liquids refused to settle, swirling lazily in cauldrons even when untouched.

Magic was unsettled. At lunch, Hermione spread her parchments across the table again. "The seal didn't just repair itself," she said quietly. "It reconfigured."

Ron stared at her. "You say that like it's better."

"It might be."

Harry leaned forward. "Explain."

Hermione tapped a diagram she'd drawn of the pillars beneath the lake. "Originally, Aequor Thalorath was bound as a corrupted entity. But when Percy stabilized it, the configuration changed. It's no longer purely a prison."

Percy frowned. "Then what is it?"

"A conduit."

Silence.

"For what?" Ron asked.

Hermione's expression faltered.

"I don't know yet."

Percy's pulse quickened. He already suspected. The lake didn't feel suppressed anymore. It felt… connected. That night, the dreams began again.

But this time, Percy wasn't drowning. He stood upon an endless surface of dark water beneath a starless sky. No storm, no chains, no abyss clawing upward. Only the endless horizon.

The golden eye opened before him, but smaller now, contained within a vast shape coiled beneath the surface.

Aequor endures

The voice resonated.

Percy didn't flinch. "You're not fully sealed," he said.

Nor fully broken.

The water beneath his feet rippled outward in slow circles. "You were holding something back."

Yes.

"And now?"

The eye dimmed slightly.

The gate weakens.

Percy felt it, not physically, but cosmically. Something vast pressing against reality from the other side.

"What is it?" For the first time, the ancient presence hesitated.

That which unmade the depths.

Cold slid through Percy's veins.

"You mean something worse than you."

I was guardian. Then I was bound. Corruption followed. But what lies beneath was never of sea nor sky.

The water trembled faintly.

It is absence given will.

Percy's breath caught. The abyss. Not darkness. Absence.

"When the chains snapped," Percy said slowly, "it pushed harder."

Yes.

"And the new seal?"

Temporary.

Percy clenched his fists. "Then we strengthen it."

The eye focused sharply.

Balance cannot be forced.

Before Percy could respond, the surface beneath him fractured. Not breaking, but shifting, and he was falling. He woke upright in bed, heart pounding. Harry was staring at him from across the room.

"You felt it too, didn't you?" Harry asked.

Percy didn't pretend. "Yeah."

Harry swallowed.

"I saw it last night. Not the sea thing. Something else. No shape. Just… nothing. Like my mind skipped." Percy's stomach twisted.

"It's pushing at you too."

Harry gave a humorless laugh. "Brilliant. Another ancient entity." The next disturbance came at noon. Without warning, every source of water in Hogwarts froze solid. Goblets. Fountains. Even the Black Lake. Ice spread across the surface in a perfect circle, starting from the center outward. Students rushed to windows in alarm.

Hermione's face went white. "That's not Aequor." Percy felt it instantly. Wrong, still, and dead. They ran for the grounds again. The lake had become a mirror of frost. The air above it shimmered strangely, as if light itself was thinning. At the center of the ice, a crack formed.

Not downward. Upward. Reality bent. A jagged tear split the air above the frozen lake, not large, but deep. Through it, there was no darkness. There was nothing. No color. No light. No void. Just absence. Harry staggered back. "That's what I saw."

The tear widened slightly, and the ice around it began to disintegrate, not melting, unmaking. Percy stepped forward instinctively. The lake beneath the ice stirred violently. Aequor reacted instantly.

The frozen surface shattered as colossal waves erupted upward, slamming against the tear in space. Water roared skyward, coiling around the rift like a living barrier. The golden eye flared beneath the surface.

Aequor defends.

Hermione shouted over the chaos, "It's probing the seal! Testing for weaknesses!" The tear pulsed. Where water touched it, it vanished. Not evaporated. Erased.

Percy felt panic surge. "Aequor can't hold that forever!" The eye turned toward him.

Balance.

Percy understood immediately. He ran into the surf as waves crashed around him. "Percy!" Ron yelled. But Percy waded forward until the water rose to his chest. He didn't command it. He listened. The lake responded in resonance.

He felt the seal beneath, the reconfigured lattice of magic woven between wizard, demigod, and ancient guardian. It wasn't meant to imprison alone. It was meant to channel.

"Harry!" Percy shouted. "Your magic, don't blast it! Focus it!"

Harry stepped forward without hesitation. Hermione's runes ignited in the air. Ron raised his wand beside them. Percy closed his eyes and let the tide move through him.

The lake surged inward, compressing around the tear. Harry's magic arced into the current, lightning-like but controlled. Hermione's ancient script wrapped around both, stabilizing.

The tear flickered. The absence pressed back. For a terrifying second, Percy felt himself slipping toward it, toward nothingness. Then the lake roared. Not in rage. In refusal.

Water and magic converged in a blinding pulse of blue and gold. The tear snapped shut. The ice melted instantly. The lake crashed back into place. Silence followed. Not uneasy this time. Resolved. Percy collapsed to his knees in shallow water, gasping.

Harry splashed toward him. Hermione and Ron followed seconds later. "It's not Thalorath we're fighting," Hermione whispered. No," Percy said hoarsely. The lake beneath him pulsed once, steady and calm. A guardian. Not a villain. The true enemy had no name.

Yet.

Far below, Aequor Thalorath coiled once more, no longer merely bound, no longer corrupted alone.

Watching. Waiting.

Holding the gate.

But for how long?
