Chapter 23 - Chapter 22: The Thing Beneath the School

The seal cracked beneath Lupin's feet. Red light moved along the fracture, changed to blue, then brightened enough to make Percy shield his eyes. He stepped back before Lupin told him to.

"What's happening?" Harry shouted over the roar.

"The outer wards are failing," Lupin said. "Stay beside me."

A piece of ceiling struck the floor behind Harry. Mist rose from the opening, and Percy caught his sleeve as he tried to look over the edge.

Something moved inside the mist. Percy could not find its feet or tell how much of it remained below.

He felt a voice against his thoughts rather than hearing it in the room.

"The heir has returned. The blood has touched the root. The door is open."

Percy staggered, clutching his head. "What, what is that thing?"

"The old records describe a binding," Lupin said. "They disagree about what it holds. I do not intend to test that with you standing here."

Harry looked horrified. "And now it's waking up?"

"The outer marks have been disturbed," Lupin said. "The tree was part of that system."

Percy looked at his hands. "But I didn't—"

"You touched something already under strain. That is not the same as causing all of this. It responded to your magic, and we need to learn why."

"What does that mean?" Percy's voice was tight.

"Your water magic matches part of the binding," Lupin said. "I cannot yet tell you whether it recognizes you or the power you carry."

The ground lurched again.

From the widening crack, a shape began to rise.

A dark mass rose through the crack. Several long shapes moved around one bright eye, then folded back into its body. Percy could see no fixed outline to aim at.

He tried to draw breath and found his chest tight. Lupin put himself between the boys and the opening.

Lupin raised his wand. "Get behind me. Now."

Harry and Percy both obeyed, scrambling backward as the shadow-beast rose higher.

But the thing didn't attack.

It looked directly at Percy, and in his mind, it whispered again.

"Come closer, child of two worlds. You are the key. The seal can be reforged... or broken."

The shape sank before Percy answered. Mist followed it, and the crack narrowed until only a thin light remained. Nothing about that looked like a permanent repair.

"Why didn't it attack?" Harry asked, panting.

"It wanted a response," Lupin said. "It did not receive one."

Percy swallowed hard. "Waiting for what?"

A new voice spoke from the entrance of the chamber.

"For him to decide."

Dumbledore stood in the doorway. His eyes moved from the boys to the damaged floor before he entered.

"Step away from the seal," he said. "We will discuss how you reached it somewhere else."

Percy stared at him. "You knew. About the seal. About this thing."

"I knew of an old binding," Dumbledore said. "I did not know it could do what you have just seen. There are also things I should have explained sooner."

"But what is it?" Percy asked. "Why does it know me?"

"One account describes people whose magic helped maintain it," Dumbledore said. "Yours resembles the sea component. A resemblance is not proof of a family history."

Percy looked down at the trident. Every explanation seemed to make it less like a weapon and more like an obligation.

"You mean… this thing is connected to my family?"

"It is responding to you," Dumbledore said. "We must determine which connection it recognizes before relying on it."

In the headmaster's office, Percy waited while Dumbledore asked Lupin for the sequence of changes at the seal. They spoke where he could hear them, which he preferred to another private conference about him.

He watched the fire and tried to stop replaying the eye rising from the crack.

Guardian. Heir. Key. Nobody had explained whether those words described three different jobs.

He remembered exactly where his old power had come from. He did not know why a boundary in this world would recognize it.

That was frightening enough without deciding it meant he was dangerous by nature.

Wind shook the office window. Percy felt rain begin against the glass.

Below the castle, the pressure moved once.

He waited for it to move again.

It did not. That did not tell him whether it had stopped or was waiting.

Percy sat nearer the fire when Dumbledore offered him a chair. His hands were cold, and he had no wish to make them perform another demonstration.

Lupin explained the promise before Percy had to ask again. Greyback had threatened to seek the lower route. Lupin had promised to keep children away from it, not to deliver Percy to him. Dumbledore recorded the threat and said the search for Greyback would proceed separately. Percy still wanted to know why nobody had told him.

"Why did you think my magic would match?" Percy asked. "What did you know before I arrived?"

"We observed water answering you without a spell," Dumbledore said. "The records mention a sea bearer. I had a theory, not an established ancestry."

Percy frowned. "Are you saying I'm not fully human?"

"You are a person with a power we do not understand," Lupin said. "That does not make you less human."

"We should have told you what we suspected," Dumbledore said. "Keeping you uninformed did not keep the connection from forming."

Percy looked at him properly. The admission mattered, though it did not undo the evening. He had spent too many years being told other people understood his life better than he did.

"So what now?" he asked quietly. "What does this mean for me?"

"Report any further contact," Dumbledore said. "Do not answer an instruction merely because it knows your name. We will work on a way to interrupt it."

"But if I'm the key," Percy said, "then maybe I can re-seal it."

Lupin stepped forward. "Or you could unleash it completely."

Percy turned sharply. "You think I'd do that?"

"I think you might act before you understand the mechanism," Lupin said. "That is a risk we can address. It is not an accusation about what you want."

Dumbledore drew a list toward Percy. "These records may explain the connections. You will have help reading them. We will not make another inspection into a test of your courage."

Percy nodded slowly. "And the thing in the chamber, can it… leave?"

"We have seen only a partial appearance," Dumbledore said. "For now the binding limits it. I cannot promise what happens if the remaining structure fails."

"Then somebody else may decide I am a way in," Percy said. He disliked how easily the idea explained the watchers.

Dumbledore sat opposite him rather than continuing the discussion from behind his desk. "That is a reason to protect you."

Percy looked up.

"It is not a reason to stop treating you as a student."

Back in the dormitory, Percy lay awake while Ron slept and Harry pretended to. The trident stood beside the desk, where the staff had left it after the examination.

Percy could still feel the lower boundary. He tried attending to the bed beneath him instead of the place asking for his attention.

He sat up, running a hand through his hair.

He did not know how to close it. He knew less than the names people had given him suggested.

He would need to say that again if somebody forgot.

A sudden noise interrupted his thoughts. A soft rustle of parchment.

A letter lay beside the lamp. Black ribbon held it closed. Percy was certain the space had been empty when he went to bed.

He checked the ribbon, then opened the page without taking his eyes off the room for long.

Inside, in smooth, looping script, were the words:

"You are not the only heir.

The seal was just the beginning."

No name. No signature.

Percy read both lines a second time.

Another heir, if the writer was telling the truth.

It might mean help. It might mean a person making the same dangerous assumptions about him.

He put the letter beside the other notes. In the morning, he would ask someone to read it with him.

To Be Continued... Next week!
