Chapter 2 - Learning about Mana

In my previous life, I was the strongest. I could have countries kneeling to me with just a glance. I was the best. I've outdueled Kings from other countries, destroyed countries; my sword skills and ki control were unmatched. Even with all my power and authority, I've never been as proud of this.

Hehe, I can crawl baby!

I've had to make do with my mother telling me stories before I went to bed and cried whenever she stopped too early. My father would put me on his lap and tell me stories about him when he was younger and how he met my mother and such.

My father, Hendrick is a retired adventurer (surprisingly that's a job) had a good amount of experience. He was on multiple parties that searched for treasures, rare beasts, ancient places, etc... He was even part of a huge exploration team that found ancients remains of a civilization. He met my mother on the border of a town called Alder on his way back to the adventurers guild. He confidently said that my mother fell in love with him at first sight. Which I assume is a lie because my mother hit the back of his head saying he shouldn't lie.

My name in this world is Elliot if you're wondering, Eli or El for short, which sounds a little too cute for my taste; but hey after getting a glimpse of myself in a mirror, I have to say, I look adorable with my pale blonde hair I got from my father and bright green eyes, inherited from my mother. Though I don't know how my facial features will end up as, looking at my mother and father I can tell I will be good-looking when I mature.

These couple of weeks I've been trying to crawl until I finally did it and managed to crawl into the study. I even managed to sneak in when my mother was preoccupied with doing the laundry.

Where is it... where is it... where is it... found it!

The book I was looking for is called History of the World, I lay down on my belly since it's more comfortable than sitting up in my child-like body. Thinking about what I just read, it seems this world is lacking in technology but makes up for it with magic. The only sources of transportation are horse-driven carriages and ships with sails for rivers. Weapons were allowed anywhere unless you were visiting someone of status like the royal family.

In my past lifeguards or soldiers were allowed to wield concealed weapons in public but that was to apprehend criminals, not murder them.

Just 2 days ago I witnessed a man get caught stealing and someone slashed his back with an ax. It was super bloody, but instead of being scared like how people in my past life will be, they were happy that the criminal was slashed and just left the person to die. This world is composed of a continent called Galdur; some people believe that there is a second continent, but there isn't enough evidence for that claim to be made official.

The continent of Galdur has Kingdoms, each ruled by a King and their royal family. Unlike my previous world 'Earth' the king in this world is chosen by lineage, whereas in Earth it was passed down to the strongest.

If there's one thing throwing me off it's the fact that there is magic in this world. On Earth practitioners utilized and condensed the innate ki in their bodies. They had a ki center, every time you broke it and reconsolidated it, the ki center would get larger. While the practice was important, if you didn't have a decent ki core, you wouldn't be able to utilize your ki efficiently and stay stuck on the same level for the rest of your life.

This world has mana instead of ki and mana is present in the atmosphere which ki wasn't; that means mana is everywhere, and you can essentially never run on empty. If I apply the same method of forming a ki center for forming a mana core, wouldn't I be 2 or 3 times stronger than my previous self since mana is present in the atmosphere!

The next book I grabbed is called, Beginners Guide to Magic.

"Though the power to control mana is largely genetic, there have been cases where the child of 2 mages have been unable to sense mana. Recent studies have shown that 1 in 100 children are able to sense the mana around them, but it can only be studied when they awaken their mana core either in early adolescence or late teens."

Flipping towards the next page, I found something that interested me.

"There are two main ways to use mana; to enhance your body or weapon (augmenter) or to emit mana to the outside world (conjuror)..."

"Augmenters are usually warriors who strengthen their body and/or weapon to fight against mana beasts."

"Conjurors take in mana from the atmosphere and combine it with the mana in their mana core and release spells to the outside world."

Weaknesses and Shortcomings

"Augmenters, while strong warriors don't have the amount of range conjurors do. Whenever a augmenter has to fight from a distance, they will be at a disadvantage compared to a conjuror."

"A conjuror's weakness lies in fact, that they don't have as much physical strength as augmenters. Though they can bend the environment to their will, they need to borrow mana from the atmosphere, while augmenters use the mana from their mana core."
