Chapter 177 - Chapter 20

The president called Sam demanding answers. I can keep everyone safe but so why am I not allowed to stay awake. Sam asked him to destroy the facilities and stop making variants. The public watched as decorated coffins left the premises. Sam asked if it was possible for me to pretend I was his assistant. The yelling he got was enough to pop my eardrums. A few blood bags later the council agreed to use UV bombs and liquid silver to deal with the menace but the rest of them better not be within range. I was given a seat in the council. I wanted to go clubbing and Oleg took me. The Nocturnals only was cool place to hang out. I got to meet my family and party at the same time. The humans have a neutral zone club. I have never been there. Oleg wasn't interested in going there since he was certain boys who appear my age would harass me. He corrected me, "I know the wolves will descend." I reminded that he is the only wolf I am interested in. If my amnesia didn't get in my way we would have been married centuries ago. He didn't say a word. He kept his mouth shut as we arrived at Edith hall.

Hayden was there talking to Kirigan and Kaz. I was surprised to see he had become one of us. Oleg was not happy. His anger flairs up when I am too friendly with men. I recalled he had saved my life and I had given him the slip after he asked for my help. Hayden turned around and gave me a wink. Oleg snarled and Roland reminded him that I prefer him of all people. He kept his anger under control as we greeted each other. Oleg wished I would meet him a thousand years later. I told him it is generous of him to consider our meeting a thousand years from now. He kept his mouth shut but his throat let out a noise like a lion. I smelled him and he was taken off guard. We danced till boredom took over. I reminded him that anyone that is not Oleg is declared my father, brother, uncle, grandfather and cousin. That was enough to quell his jealous rage. Roland was snickering and Kiska slapped him hard. He snarled at him. Eska whispered something into his ears. He apologized and moved on.

I requested that everyone should just stop smacking Roland for stress relief. It is bad behaviour. He grinned till Oleg reminded me that he can go overboard. I reconsidered. I requested a smack if he misbehaves or crosses a line. Other than that leave him alone. Roland said he was wondering what it would be like he had to hunt me instead of vampires. Sam was walking by and he was upset. He spent ten minutes yelling at Roland. He had to remind him that he is a member of my security. His job is my safety. There is no reason to put me in danger. Roland reminded Sam that I like my security unhinged. This is why there has been no request for extra security. The others would demand more security while I am happy with just nine people. He stared at me for any sort of confirmation. I nod my head. Sam nearly passed out. The council has at least a few dozen and demanded more every other day. I am the only one who has so few in my protection detail.

Sam was curious exactly how unhinged. Kiska stepped forward to explain, "We discuss how she could be taken and try to figure out what we could do to prevent catastrophe. We know what is at stake. She has been very supportive. She had insisted we should not be confined. We are free to express our personalities. She made it clear she don't want robots protecting her. We have flaws and merits and our opinions really do matter." Sam was impressed but still he insisted that I get more people as part of my security. I made it clear that I like people who are creative thinkers. People who can think independently and yet get along with people. The guys are serious most of time but I like getting to know them. Roland is irreplaceable. The same goes for the rest of my team. Sam knows about Ute so he asked around and so did the vampires. The newly formed council which consists of both sides from each country decided that a competition was how they will decide who will join the Alpha guards. Seven trials that will help them figure out who is worthy.

Roland is the one who has the capability so I ordered him to use his brain to full capacity as he comes up with a maverick. His alpha shook his head and the others stared at me like I had lost my mind. Roland was grinning ear to ear as he bowed as low as he possibly could. He asked me to block his thoughts so only the team and I can hear it. So there will be no cheating. The Alpha protested but I placed my hand on his and obliged his wish. He looked years younger and less stressful. Like I had removed something that was harming him. He tilted his head and went to work. I remembered my friend Amy who was a lawyer. She had a maverick roommate who had pretended to be a mugger that came solely to rough her up. All this was to test her fight or flight response. He promised more guerilla style scenarios to fix her defensive capabilities. He kept his promise. The poor woman was jumpy for the next month or so before she relaxed. I admired the man's tenacious nature to defend his friend which is why I am not trading Roland for anyone. I looked up to see a few surprised faces. The council was staring vacantly and the others were questioning my sanity.

I smiled, "I want my security to understand what it's like to face the big bad world. I go places where it is coin toss. Fifty percent chance the locals are friendly. So their maverick personalities has kept us alive. The only I take those routes is because my assailants has a limit before they give up. So I am not sorry for my friend. I am pleased she came out like steel forged from fire." The others concurred. The soldiers explained the harsh conditions they are trained. So if the person was trying to protect me they better be get used to the insanity. I smacked Roland on the back of his head and he switched terms. He explained that sometimes nothing makes sense and the person feels like only sane person but even that is not enough. He recalled the days when he was a soldier fighting zombies and how the out of the box thinking actually saved his life and his team. Kiska and Eska confirmed this. The council was curious why they were assigned to me and not the council. I grinned, "I requested the batch as my security so the recruitment department took me request under advisement. I was the only one without protection so they decided this won't be a problem"

I asked the guys to come up with a few guerilla style scenarios that would show their quick wit and who was cool under pressure. I saw Roland's Alpha shake his head as he saw the many different scenarios in Roland's head. Kiska and Eska had a few amendments. Oleg was having a hard time keeping a straight face till I made a few amendments. Then the others started laughing. Serena had pursed her lips before she decided to contribute. Sam stared as no one spoke but they seems understand each other. I smiled as I explained, "Mind comms" I have him a sneak preview. He was impressed. The other council members were grinning. Sam had one question, "Why Guerilla style" Oleg replied, "The one who comes after her only has that one style of attack. Hit us like it wrecking ball and take her away. We have people use shoulder mounted missile launchers to take down our ride. Traffic jams, wild fires and explosions all in the hopes to kidnap her in the ensuing confusion." A few snarled in anger. After an hour of discussion everyone agreed that Guerilla style tests will have to do.
