Chapter 6 - Uncertainty

After reaching Birbhum District Hospital, Sharmishtha had a chat with the doctor and arranged an ambulance for Manohar. She then asked Ruby and Arnab to drive back to Kolkata with Manohar. Since his condition was stable and the hospital granted her request to send a nurse along with them, it wouldn't be much trouble. Recalling Rey's orders, Rubina kept insisting upon staying with her. Sharmishtha would never tolerate an interference to this extent. So, Rubina gave up and agreed to go back. "Even if something happens, I won't be of much help," Rubina thought. After sending them back to Kolkata, Sharmishtha gathered information from the inspector. He told Sharmishtha that no roses were nearby. Apparently, the accident patterns of Adams and Manohar didn't match either. Adams was crossing the street when he got run over by a car. The car owner clarified that the breaks weren't working. He was the first person to call the emergency service. He hit a traffic light post while trying to control his car that ran over Adams and sustained some minor injuries as well. On the other hand, Manohar got hit by a truck while driving back to Kolkata. The truck driver was suffering from sleep deprivation that led to the accident. He managed to slow down the truck as much as possible otherwise; Manohar would not have been alive. He also brought him to the hospital with the help of the locals. The police recorded his statement and filed a case against him as he broke traffic rules but of course, he wouldn't be charged with an attempt to murder. After analysing all aspects, Sharmishtha thought, "Maybe I was focusing on this stuff a bit too much. Well, I have been overthinking a lot of stuff lately. I am sick of my unbalanced state of mind. I guess; I need to see a therapist."

Although Sharmishtha should be relieved, yet she was still in a state of paranoia. She couldn't shake this feeling that something wasn't sitting right. Inspector Grant did find some black roses near Adams. But he also stated that there was a nursery nearby. So, maybe the flower came from there. All the information that the accused provided were right and verified. So, there was no room for doubt. Yet, her mind was still uncertain whether it was an accident or not. She lied down. It was a long day. They arrived in Birbhum very early in the morning. The hospital discharged Manohar later in the afternoon. All the paperwork, from the hospital to the police station, took a few more hours. It was past seven; they decided that it was better to get rest and continue the next morning. So, they stayed back in a hotel. Arjun was particularly annoyed with the fact that they were going to be another day late. So, Sharmishtha agreed to let him continue on his own until they arrived. He was an experienced investigative journalist. He had seen the dangers beforehand. There was no point in holding him back.

She closed her eyes for a while. Her phone rang. Still laid down, she glanced and the screen and picked it up. It was Rey. She smiled and received the call.

"Hello? Shyra?" Rey asked softly.

"Hmm?" replied a sleepy Sharmishtha.

"You sound exhausted, Love. Was it a long day?"

"Very long," replied Sharmishtha with a smile.

"Are you still mad at me?"

"No."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

"I miss you."

"I miss you too."

"Should I come back quickly?"

"As soon as possible."

"Is that so?"

"Yes," Sharmishtha replied. Suddenly, her voice broke down as tears rolled down her eyes.

"Are you crying?" asked a concerned Rey.

"Yes," replied Sharmishtha softly.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"I will come back in a week Love. Don't cry," Rey replied softly. "Such a child!" he thought.

"Have you taken your medicines?"

"Yes. Um, Rey?"

"Yes?"

"Don't you think that we have turned into a cheesy couple?"

"I guess we have." Both of them smiled.

Sharmishtha and Rey kept talking. It was months after they were having just a simple stupid cheesy conversation. No fights, no work stuff, just them talking to each other. They seemed to have lost track of time. Meanwhile, Roy and Rohan were trying to call Sharmishtha for two hours. It was past 10. They were going down to the restaurant to have dinner. "Ugh! her phone is still engaged," spoke Roy. "Well, it might be someone important. Don't you know anyone who would be important to her?" asked Rohan.

"No. We never spoke about her personal life. Anyway, why don't you go and check?" said Roy.

"Very well then. I will go to her room and fetch her from there," said Rohan and went out.

He knocked on the door of Sharmishtha's room. There was no answer. He knocked again. "Coming," she yelled out. She opened the door while still holding the phone near her ear. "Oh, Rohan!" She was a bit surprised and embarrassed. She got so drowned in conversation with her husband that she had forgotten about everything.

Noticing her half-red face, Rohan asked, "You alright, Ma'am? We were going down to have dinner. So, Roy Sir asked me to fetch you since you haven't been answering his calls."

"Calls? He called?" thought Sharmishtha. She quickly checked her phone. "Ten missed calls! Damn it! What the heck am I doing ?" she thought. Looking back at Rohan, she said, " I am coming down in five minutes. You two go ahead."

"Alright," said Rohan and left.

---------------------

Mr Roychowdhury was in a good mood tonight. After such a long time, he had a good chat with his wife. He wanted to talk more, but she needed to go. But he was still happy. They talked with each other for almost three hours. He was sitting in his hotel room waiting for a man. The woman who threatened him yesterday wanted him to complete one assignment, after which he would be free to cut all ties and get back all the evidence against him. She sent the man with the details of the assignment. Thirty minutes had passed, yet no one had come. It was getting irritating for him. He was about to go off to dinner when he received a call. "Come near the bridge unarmed," a voice said, and the call got disconnected. There was a bridge nearby the hotel. So, he went there. Nobody approached him. So he walked on the bridge for quite a while when he noticed a man following him. He stopped.

"Keep walking," the man said. Roychowdhury had no choice. The man then walked up in front of him and dropped a package on the sidewalk near the bin and walked away. Roychowdhury quickly went there and picked it up. It looked like a Macdonald's empty carton, but there was an envelope inside. He quickly took out the envelope and put it inside his overcoat pocket and dropped the carton in the bin. He came back to his room and opened it. The front page contained a short note that read, "In your newly bought firm, some people are eager about our rose nursery. They have been lurking over us for the last couple of years. One woman, in particular."
