Chapter 209 - Chapter 174: The Jaws Close

**Captain James Nolan's Log, Supplemental**

**USS Discovery – Bridge**

**USS Discovery Command recording**

**40 days after Rothgard's Fall**

The anvil is set.

The hammer is raised.

The black tide is about to break.

 ---

Nolan stood motionless on the bridge, eyes locked on the massive holographic countdown that dominated the forward display. The numbers ticked down in cold, clinical precision.

**10… 9… 8…**

The entire bridge was silent. Every officer, every sensor technician, every Marine on watch held their breath. A.L.I. stood beside him, her green eyes reflecting the glowing digits.

**7… 6… 5…**

Nolan's jaw tightened. His hands were clasped behind his back so tightly his knuckles had gone white.

**4… 3… 2… 1…**

The final number vanished.

Nolan's voice cut through the silence like a blade. "Execute Operation Hammer and Anvil. All forces, go."

 ---

Forward Operating Base – Command Center

In the FOB command center, Captain Marcus Hale and Captain Aric Vaelor stood shoulder to shoulder over the holo-table. Hale keyed his comm. "All units — execute. Alpha, Charlie, Delta — you are weapons free." Vaelor raised his communication crystal, his voice steady and commanding. "Albion forces — the gap is open. Hold your flanks. The hammer falls now." Both men looked at each other for a single heartbeat.

 ---

The Western Front – Center Sector

The center of the Albion line began to fall back in a controlled, deliberate withdrawal. Guardians in grey armor moved with them, firing sporadic, precise bursts into the Imperial positions to keep the enemy's heads down. The line split as Alpha Company peeled east and Charlie Company peeled west, with the center opening like a mouth.

For a long moment, the Imperial lines were eerily quiet.

Then faint voices carried across the killing ground — low, guttural, growing in strength. "FOR THE EMPEROR!" The roar that followed was primal. Like black ants exploding from a kicked anthill, thousands of Imperial soldiers surged forward in a single, frenzied wave. Black armor glinted in the dying light. Banners snapped. Mages hurled fire and lightning as the tide poured into the gap.

Albion soldiers fought desperately to maintain formation as they continued their controlled retreat, but the pressure was immense. Men were being pushed back, step by bloody step, as the Guardians took up the slack. Grey-armored figures moved like ghosts between the retreating Albion lines, laying down disciplined, lethal fire that slowed the Imperial advance. MRAC barricades snapped into position wherever the line threatened to buckle. The jaws were beginning to form.

USS Discovery – Bridge

Nolan's eyes never left the satellite feed. Minute by minute, the Imperial force committed more and more of its strength. The satellite overlay showed the black tide surging deeper into the corridor — thousands of soldiers, mages, and support elements abandoning their battlements to chase what they believed was a collapsing Albion line.

**+4:00**

Nolan finally spoke, his voice low and final. "Delta. Execute the hammer strike. Hit them from the south. Full force. Now."

 ---

Behind Enemy Lines – Southern Flank

From the treeline, the Delta and Marine strike force erupted like a thunderclap. USSF HAS-V armored vehicles — both 4x4 and 6x6 variants — roared out of the darkness, their heavy wheels churning the earth as they accelerated toward the Imperial rear. Electromagnetic cannons thundered in long, devastating salvos, tearing through the southern battlements and supply dumps with surgical brutality. Explosions ripped through the night in brilliant chains of fire and shrapnel, sending burning debris and screaming soldiers into the air.

Above them, VS-22 Jackal gunships swept in low, their twin hybrid fusion-torch engines howling. Twenty-millimeter hypersonic Vulcan cannons opened up in rhythmic, merciless bursts that lit the darkness in brilliant red streaks. Tracer fire hammered the Imperial command posts, mana stores, and rear-area formations with terrifying precision. The southern flank collapsed into pure chaos.

Imperial soldiers who had been preparing to reinforce the main assault suddenly found themselves under withering fire from an enemy they couldn't see. Mages tried to raise protective wards, only to be cut down mid-cast. Supply wagons and ammunition stores detonated in violent secondary explosions. The very battlements meant to protect their rear were reduced to burning rubble in under ninety seconds.

And still the hammer fell as Delta operators moved like black shadows between the HAS-Vs, laying down precise, lethal fire on any Imperial unit attempting to reorganize or fall back. The armored vehicles pushed deeper, their heavy cannons systematically destroying every strongpoint that could slow the northern advance. The Imperials at the rear had only one direction left to go.

North.

Straight into the gap.

Straight into the jaws.

USS Discovery – Bridge

Nolan watched the satellite feed with cold, clinical focus. The black tide had fully committed. Their momentum was now unstoppable. Nolan's voice cut through the silence like a blade. "First Company. Strike."

The jaws close.
