Fang's eyes had taken on that focused, unsettling brightness he got when a pattern had finally revealed itself to him. "The pulse timing is not random. It is echoing a rhythm."
Ren's brows drew together. "What rhythm?"
Fang pointed to the chart, then to the small notation he had made beside Avi's original blood assessment. "The same cadence that appeared in the child's dormant response. Not the blood itself. The family bond around it."
Pax frowned. "Speak plainly."
Fang looked at him. "It may not be trying to enter the house directly."
Ren's expression changed first, and then very slightly, Pax's.
Ren said quietly, "It is trying to use the bloodline as a key."
Fang nodded.
Pax cursed under his breath.
That was rare enough that Ren glanced at him in mild surprise. "You really are annoyed."
"I am offended on principle," Pax said flatly. "We have a perfectly good security system. Why is the thing attempting to trespass so complicated?"
