Chapter 7 - Desperate and Intelligent

Silas opened the large doors that led to his office. It had been a long day so far, and he still had a lot of work to finish.

His stomach grumbled and he began to really feel the consequences of not eating lunch while he was out. He sat down at his desk, hoping to finish up quickly today so he could head home and relax.

His cold and exhausted eyes landed on the small stack of papers under a manila folder that had been piled on his desk. He grumbled as he picked up the manila folder to read the small blue note that was attached.

This might be the best candidate, the note read.

His eyebrows furrowed in confusion as he set aside the manila folder to take a look at the related documents underneath.

He quickly read over them and realized they were mock up contracts for the marriage. He glanced back at the manila folder, impressed that Harrison had put all this together so quickly and even found a possible candidate. He would have to give him a reward for his hard work.

He opened the manila folder in order to survey the candidate Harrison had found.

His eyes scrunched in confusion as soon as the packet inside came into view.

Why on Earth is it an application for the company. Silas furrowed his eye brows as he tried to ascertain how, and for what reason, Harrison had gotten the marriage candidate to fill out an application for the position of his wife?

Had his assistant gone mad? Had he put out the marriage contract candidate as a job opening for the company?

Had all candidates filled out the application?

He quickly made a search online to make sure his overworked assistant hadn't actually put up a job posting. Nothing came up on on his search and he let out a sigh of relief.

Still, this was a strange way to find a candidate. Silas had assumed Harrison would just put together a compilation of background checks and a report for possible marriage candidates.

His stomach growled and reminded him of his desire to retire early. He would question this later, he thought as he began to look over the application.

His blue eyes grew in recognition of the name at the top of the application.

"Adelina Hart." He mused as he tried to recall where he knew that name from.

The answer came to him in a flash as he remembered that it was her family that had been ruined for her father's embezzlement scandal.

He remembered hearing about the scandal and also later researched it when he had met Vivian.

There was even testimony that the girl had threatened Vivian into lying on the stand. He grimaced at the thought of anyone threatening his dear girlfriend.

"This girl. How on Earth would she be the best candidate?" He pondered as he continued to look at the application.

He scrutinized her work history. It did seem like she was desperate enough based on the startling amount of part time jobs she had accumulated.

He sweeped past her achievements and education. He nodded. She was well educated and had a variety of achievements.

If she hadn't been blacklisted by companies, she surely would have been a great asset in the business world.

He turned the page to look at her ethics and morals. All of her answers were well written and thought out. He scowled as he thought of how much she must have prepared for these types of questions. There was no way this girl had morals, especially when she had threatened his kind girlfriend to lie in court.

He paused as his eyes landed on a question.

Why do you want this position?

Her answer made his negative thoughts pause.

"So she wants to redeem herself?" He analyzed.

He pondered this statement as he looked back on her recent history. Yes she has been through a hard time these past few years. She may have indeed changed her ways due to that.

He knew from personal experience, that people could change based on their individual situations.

After all, he had changed after his own trauma. He frowned and pushed the negative memories to the back of his mind.

His thoughts wandered back to how she had threatened Vivian. He attempted to put himself in her shoes. If he had someone in jeopardy, he would do whatever it took to save them as well. He nodded.

Desperate and intelligent. She at least showed she wanted to have good morals on the outside. And at the very least, she was resilient.

"Okay." He approved as he set the application down.

He would meet with her and see just what she was like for himself. If he determined she was good enough to become the birth mother of his heir, he would overlook her past crimes.

His eyes grew darker. If she was still a cold hearted person, he could make her suffer after the contract had ended. She would never be able to touch Vivian again, especially if Vivian was the stepmother of her child.

"Adelina Hart." He considered thoughtfully.

He put the application to the side and began to mark changes on the mock contract. He finished after awhile and set aside the marriage contract documents. He set forward on finishing the rest of his duties for the day. He was in deep concentration while writing a report when a knock was heard at his door.

He glanced up from the computer screen, the blue light reflecting off his face as Harrison entered the office.

A disheveled Harrison stood at the doorway. Silas could tell the man was exhausted and overloaded by the frantic look on his face and his unkept appearance.

Harrison had been run ragged by the financial department, but in the end everything was sorted out. He quickly walked towards the CEO in order to update him on the situation.

"Sorry Sir. There was an issue I had to resolve downstairs in the financial department." He glanced at the documents that were set aside on the desk.

"I compiled the information for you regarding the marriage contract. Have you reviewed it?" Harrison inquired.

Silas went back to his computer screen and began typing once again. He would not interrogate his assistant for the time being, as the poor short man looked like he would fall over if he was put under any other stress.

"I have made some changes to the mock. As for the candidate, give her a call and schedule a meeting. I'd like to meet her." Silas confirmed as he slid the manila folder to the short man.

Harrison looked at his CEO with questioning eyes. He wanted to interview the applicant for the secretary personally? Harrison then remembered the last secretary to the CEO.

He shuddered as he remembered how she had caused disaster after disaster.

I guess that makes sense then. He probably doesn't trust the interviewer after they hired that last incompetent secretary. Harrison was still cleaning up the messes that girl had made.

"Will do. Any time in particular?" Harrison asked.

Silas glared at him. The answer was obvious they had a time limit after all. He couldn't understand where his assistant's mind was. First having the contract candidates fill out an application, and now asking a silly question like this. Perhaps he had overworked Harrison too much and he was losing brain cells.

"As soon as possible." Silas confirmed.

Harrison nodded. He must be taking the secretary interview this seriously since Madam Night made the request. Harrison was too tired to think about it anymore, and took the application and began to head out of the office.

Silas took another glance at the short man, Harrison was obviously running on empty. Silas let out a deep sigh.

"And Harrison." Silas interrupted the short man's exit. Harrison turned back towards him, exhaustion evident on his face even through his thick glasses.

"After you schedule that appointment, head home and take the day off tomorrow. I need you at your best, things will only get tougher from here on out." Silas ordered, sincerely concerned for his assistant's well being.

Harrison's mouth fell open. His demanding boss was actually giving him a day off? Harrison almost leaped with joy.

"Yes sir!" Harrison squealed in delight as he exited the office. Heading immediately to send his reports and schedule the interview.

Silas went back to finishing the report with heavy thoughts. It would be hard to hire a new assistant, if Harrison lost his marbles. Plus the level of trust he had in Harrison had grown and to Silas, Harrison had become irreplaceable.

After finishing the last of his reports, Silas finally looked up. His eyes were bloodshot from looking at his computer screen for too long and he chanced a glance at the large window. It was dark. His eyes closed in agitation as he double checked the time. He had wanted to get done early today, but now it was almost midnight.

He sighed as he stretched his muscular arms, trying to rid himself of the tension that had built up.

He checked his phone for any incoming emails and saw one from his assistant. He nodded in approval as the meeting with Adelina had already been scheduled for tomorrow.

It would be a long day tomorrow as well, Silas thought to himself.

He grabbed his coat with a tired sigh as he exited his office. Ready to head home for the evening.

Twenty minutes later, Silas was beyond irritated as he walked into his home. On the drive home, he had received a text from his step mother requesting that he join them for a family meeting.

He flung his coat onto the table in anger, surprising the care taker, Marilyn.

"Welcome home, Sir. Is everything alright?" The kind old woman asked in concern. She had taken care of Silas for years now, and knew when he was in a foul mood.

Silas nodded, anger still radiating around him like a furnace. "Please make something for dinner. I have yet to eat today." Silas requested as his stomach growled.

Marilyn understood at once and quickly rushed to the kitchen to prepare.

Silas returned to his bedroom. He paced the floor back and forth, creating tred marks on the carpet with every step.

What was this about? Why would that evil woman contact him now?

He frowned.

They weren't family.

Not in the slightest.

He growled as he lit up a cigarette to attempt to calm himself down.

The cigarette burned down as Silas stood in silent rage. He felt restless, completely revigorated by this feeling of anxiety and anger. The cigarette wasn't enough to calm him.

He quickly put out the cigarette and grabbed some track clothing. Perhaps a jog would cool his mind.

He quickly changed out of his suit, pulling the black shirt over his rippling muscles.

He also picked up a hoodie and mask, he was in no mood for paparazzi tonight. He may have anyone who bothers him tonight killed at this rate.

He quickly grabbed his phone and ran out of the house, all thoughts of dinner forgotten.

He quickly began jogging, not paying attention to his surroundings as his mind ran faster than the speed of light.

What had the evil woman wanted. He didn't want to see her, or the hell spawn she had produced. He gritted his teeth, his breath shallow as he pounded into the concrete on the sidewalk.

The text had also included his grandmother. He cared for the old woman, but he didn't want to face her right now. Not when he had found out about his grandfather's will. If she knew about it, she would only berate him for dating Vivian and begin to set up an arranged marriage meeting.

It would surely complicate his plans that he had set in motion.

The thoughts of the will soon stopped him as the heavy pounding of pavement ceased.

Had his stepmother found out about the contents as well? Is that why she was holding this dinner. He cringed as he thought of what she and her spawn could be scheming.

He shook his head continuing his jog. The fresh air finally calming him down a bit.

He had a plan and it was going accordingly. He was meeting the most suitable candidate, according to his trusty assistant, for the contract tomorrow. He could handle anything that was bound to be thrown his way.

He had jogged quite far from his residence while lost in his thoughts. When he glanced around, he realized that he did not recognize the part of the city he found himself in.

If there was one flaw to Silas Night, it was that he had absolutely zero sense of direction. It was why his bodyguards tended to follow him discreetly even if he had ordered them not to due to his habit of becoming lost.

He had headed out pretty abruptly so there was a slim chance anyone even knew that he had left the mansion.

He sighed. He would call for a car to pick him up he thought as he pulled his phone out from his pocket.

As he dialed the number for his driver, his phone suddenly powered down. He cursed as the screen went black, realizing it was out of charge.

It was late night now and he could see no taxis in the vicinity not to mention most places seem to be closed for the evening.

He soon spotted one convenience store that seemed to be lit up. He quickly secured his mask and hid deeper in his hood, he didn't want anyone to recognize him. His face was too well known and he did not want to deal with anyone trying to make money by selling his photo to the paparazzi.

He made his way to the only open store he could see, hoping the clerk would allow him to use their phone or at least give him the proper directions.
