Chapter 96 - wasn't expecting this

I walked with the air of boredom and noticed one person whose lips matched the conversation I was having with the disembodied voice. I signed and the man was asked to come with security. A man with a Scottish accent politely nudged him towards the empty room nearby. I noticed that Finn was not his usual self. He seems to be distracted. I noticed him staring at me over and over. He seems to be stalling. I asked the governor to keep him here. The man was not happy with the order. He kept staring at someone. I decided to check it out. He was a thin man propped up by a cane. He is a judge and a very unusual person. I have met this guy plenty of times. He is enigmatic at times and can be annoying the rest of the time. He behaves as though he can get away with anything. I watched him long enough. I walked over and started chatting. I finally got him to relax and asked him, "Why are you here?" He slipped up, "I am here to acquire something the governor has hidden." His eyes went wide as he realized he was busted. He tried to walk away and I followed him. He stared at me with contempt. I asked if he was being blackmailed for something he did. His eyes narrowed as he kept walking. I followed him. He refused to speak a word. I was grinning ear to ear. He kept looking back to see me coming. He told me to get back. I laughed, "This is my dead husband's uncle's house. I am free to go anywhere I please." He tried to walk faster only to fall face first. He got up and asked me if I still wear a body cam. I pointed at the one on my necklace. He froze and he tried to yell injunction. I grinned, "I am here under contract so anything you say can't be blocked with an injunction." He tried to leave and I happily escorted him out. The governor was made aware of the situation. He promised to look into it.

Tanya explained that the person on the other earpiece was attending the party. I explained that to uncle Teddy and he took me back in. We searched till the perpetrator was apprehended. The police came and processed the crime scene. The guests were swiftly moved elsewhere after a quick interview. The party continued until the guests felt it was time to go home. I was glad they left since I had unfinished business to attend to. I checked to see if no one was watching. I took off the body cam and locked it in the safe before I went downstairs. The labyrinth was easy to navigate once I knew which leads where. The first was some old writing desks lining one side of the wall one top of another. The next was a set of broken statues and a cracked vase. Then came the fork on the tunnel. Four paths lead to different places. The first led to a room filled with sentimental items. The next was an armory. The next was a path leading out of the property. The last was my destination. I kept walking straight since any deviation would lead to a dead end. The dimly lit path was illuminated by a sterilized room where a young man was. He was eating soup and bread. He put down the bowl and nodded his head in gratitude. He still winced in pain. I waved him off as I sat down with a device that could read the cockpit voice recorder. He stood still till I was done. He asked me what I was going to do. I smiled as I copied the last thirty minutes of the voice recorder and hid it in a safe. I took the voice recorder with me to NCIS. They handled the rest.

I was ordered to take a day off. So I came to see Uncle Teddy's again. He was busy but one bodyguard was very sweet. I asked the butler if I could have some finger sandwiches and some sweet tea. He escorted me upstairs where I took a shower and had a change of clothes. Aunt Melanie was waiting with her circle of friends. The bodyguards were standing behind eavesdropping. Sheila was muttering about her son divorcing for the third time. She is hoping for grandchildren but he is only marrying women who can't have any children. Sharon was on the phone with her husband about redecorating the house. She wanted the walls painted olive. His mother wanted lavender. He wanted mahogany. So far it has been a stalemate. Ashley was complaining about her son getting arrested. She turned to me hoping I could bury it. I explained that I am a homicide detective so I don't have the ability to do so. She gave me a sigh before she sipped her iced tea. She spaced out within minutes. I sat quietly until they had to leave. Then Aunt and I went to the piano room to play a few keys. Then we sat down for a pampering session. The judge from last night came. He wanted to see the document I had signed that is overruling the injunction. I grinned as I asked for his number. I sent him a copy and he read it several times. Each time his face got redder. He finally stomped his foot and walked out. I called a patrol car and asked him to watch the man like a hawk. He has proven for a matter of fact that he has very dubious intentions.

I went downstairs to check in on my patient and he gave me a kind smile as I cleaned his wound. I felt someone was watching and saw the Scotsman stare at me weirdly. I didn't say anything. I just changed the dressing and gave him his antibiotics. And he went back to sleep. I went back to the gardens and he tagged along. Auntie asked me if I was staying for dinner. I was going to yes but the phone rang which meant work. I gave her a hug and walked out. The Scotsman gave me a bow as I got up to leave. Tanya filled me in. The supercop had escaped and he had killed a kid. Everyone was panicking. I explained to Auntie what was going on. I asked her not leave the house. She called her husband and I told her not to panic. I walked out to see Van Pelt waiting. Cleo asked me if I knew the people living here. I explained that these are DD's relatives. I visit them from time to time when the memories of my loss threatens to tears open my heart. Alison was also closeby. She gave me a cup of hot cocoa and some cookies. I felt that someone is helping him. So whilst the cops looked for him. I tried to find the helper. I had to wait and see who was asking about the progress and who they reported to. Other than the chief and the captain there was only one. Mason. I think I am going to be sick. Van Pelt and Cleo wasn't far behind. They kept him busy while I cloned his phone. I got to see the text messages. I was able to find his location. He was in the flat iron district.

I explained that the governor has a twin who is evil. Cleo should hate him instead. Since this one has done nothing to earn any hatred. She explained how he had refused the funding for a weapon. I smiled as I recalled the name of the thing. She asked me how I knew. I grinned, "I was the one he had sent to investigate the authenticity of the device. I pretended to be a stranger and covertly questioned him. He laughed as he explained how he had scammed people with a fake weapon. I recorded the session and gave it to him. So obviously he wasn't going to allow a fake thing on to the battlefield so many people can die" she stared at me as I pulled out a flash drive, "Enjoy listening to his confession my dear." I drove to the station and she waited till she was at her desk to listen. To longer she listens the angerier she got. I explained that smoke was coming out of her ears. She stared at me with tears and gave me a hug. She didn't say a word as she went to talk to someone. She came back and gave me a candy bar. She wiped the tears off her face and thanked me for my honesty. The governor had withheld this information. I explained that he didn't want to embarrass the one who had introduced the device since he would lose credibility. She still passed the information to her colleagues. I sat down to finish paperwork. The chief wanted to know what I was up to. I explained that I am looking for a missing girl. She had reported abuse and suddenly she disappeared from her house. I am concerned she might be held in a secret underground tunnel under the house. She promised to get me a warrant. Alison came and apologised for being a pain in my butt. She thanked me for finding her sister. I shook her hand as I got the next red notice.
