Chapter 93 - You're being tailed. What fun

I was sleeping on the benches when someone nudged me. I woke up to see the captain and the medical examiner. I was asked to expose my back so she can catalog my injuries. I happily laughed as I undressed. She ran her cool fingers on scars. She murmured, "This was done with a belt. This is a bullet hole. This is a knife wound. The wrist looks like restraints. Most likely handcuffs or something along lines. You had a rough childhood. Who did this to you?" I frowned, "The knife wound on my neck is from a police that officer Andropov arrested. He thought hurting me would be fun. The belt marks are from my dad after he had a few drinks. He would use handcuffs to restrain me so he could alleviate his frustrations. My brother and mom have similar markings if you are interested. So did Gus. You keep asking me why I don't drink. He has traumatized me so much that seeing a bottle triggers me. The first bullet hole is when I protected Van Pelt from a sniper. The second one is when I was attacked by a hitman as he killed my assignment. In case you missed it I was horsewhipped too. Lovely uncle Davis after I had called nine one one the first time. He assumed this would encourage me to shut up. I kept going till he was behind bars" the captain chuckled, "That's what he meant when he thought he disciplined you. The fact that you managed to throw him in jail despite his repeated death threats is inspiring." I looked back and saw a terrified Alison. She fainted and I pulled out the smelling salt. It took several rubs under her nose before she woke up. She walked away without a word. The rest of the day was relatively boring. Captain invited me for a poker game. I told her that I prefer a pizza. She invited me for a barbecue. I accepted the invitation and she walked away. Super cop was staring like he had been declared the dumbest person in earth. His expression dictates a minus level IQ. I didn't say anything to him. I just walked past him like he was a piece of furniture. I remember the time I was sick and everyone I knew stayed in the hospital to such a degree that the staff declared them part of the decorum but this was different. He was a furniture that was purchased by mistake. It was as though he was something I want to unsee.

I hopped in my car and took Cleo home. We sat down to have dinner and the doorbell rang. I opened it to see the super cop. He apologized before asking if he could come in. I asked him to go home. I am not inviting him in. His posture dictates he is here to create problems. He is trying to dishonor me. He believes I have done bad things so he is here to bug the place. I have met many during the days I spent as a wife of a homicide detective and being a homicide detective. I wished him goodnight and I hope to see him tomorrow. He handed me a beer can and I slammed the door in his face. He stared for a moment and knocked again this time Cleo answered the door. She asked him if he was trying to get suspended. He said he is here to say sorry but I refuse to let him in. She grinned, "I am counting to five and calling the captain." I had already hit the speed dial. The captain answered after six rings. She wanted to know what trouble I had averted today. I simply brought the phone to the door. It took her thirty seconds to piece everything together. She asked me to put her speaker. She gave him a piece of her mind and he walked away. We ordered Thai food and watched comedies till we passed out.

The next morning I was going through a cold case when he showed up with a warrant to check my phone. The captain came with an injunction and told him to stand down or he was fired. I happily gave him the phone. According to the papers he is only allowed to go through the pictures. The ones in it were DD, my babies and Cheryl. He had no choice but to give it back and walk away. The captain followed close behind and asked if he had reached any sort of genuine satisfaction. He made it clear, "She is a killer. If I don't stop her others will die." The captain asked, "Where is your proof? You have been wrong so far. Your gut feeling is not exactly the best lately. I hope this has nothing to do with the fact that she resembles your wife who left you for someone else." The nearest officer spat out his coffee and the others dropped their assignments to eavesdrop. The man tried to say something but he ended up making no sense. Finally the boss lady told him to get back to his office and work on actual criminals or this taskforce is over. Rumor spread like wildfire. He was trying to get some closure by making me look guilty. He came back from the messy court room battle and was trying to get his bearings when he was given the case. Naturally he decided I was guilty. To everyone he was projecting his anger on me. So no matter what he wants this accusation to stick.

No one took him seriously after that. He was sent to therapy and someone else took his place. The guy was in his fifties. He had salt and pepper hair, slightly taller, medium built and rough attitude. He overruled me as a killer and moved on. He used the computer algorithm to find similarities between cold cases to track a killer. He was curious why I was searching through old cases. This is not my jurisdiction. I explained that my friend was missing and I was wondering if there are others who vanished in the same manner. If so then it is possible to find something to bring her home alive or dead. He grinned at my tenacity. He wished me good luck before grabbing a few boxes. I gave him a thumbs up, "All the best" he gave me a wink as he walked away. I got a purple notice and I asked the captain permission to help a friend regarding a medical situation. She calmly waved me off so I tipped off Cleo before leaving. I gave her my phone, gun and badge before I left. I got in my car and managed to get a few blocks away before I noticed that I had grown a tail. I grinned, "Ok buster. Time to make you look like a fool." I got in the hospital and the nurse took me to the lab. They did several tests before concluding that I am a match. I volunteered to donate my bone marrow. The doctor set up a date and I promised to be there.

I arrived at the precinct and the nearest asked me what I was up to. I explained how I was at the hospital to see if I was a match to donate bone marrow. He asked me if I was a match. I explained when the operation was going to take place. He wished me luck. I got my stuff back and Van Pelt came asking if I was really donating a kidney. I explained that I was donating bone marrow. She stared flabbergasted but congratulated me nevertheless. She promised to bring me a care package while I was in recovery. Her brother wished me luck since he believes most people die because of medical errors. I have been in the hospital far too many times. The others were grinning ear to ear. Henderson smirked, "So Miss White up to her usual I see." I waved him off as I searched social media. I found the perpetrator following her from a distance. I smiled as I called the patrolling officers, "Hey Ben are you off duty? I have a suspect for you. He is tall, dark brown hair, slim build and has a limp. He is tailing the girl who was abducted last night. He is following her everywhere. I am checking social media. He is in every photo she is in. The latest ones shows that he has scratches on his neck." He promised to have him apprehended. I sent him his pictures and soon dispatch was going nuts. I sat down to make a virtual murder board. I was trying to figure out what was going on.

The super cop came over and watched me. He stared at me bemused as I tried to figure what the creep was up to. I saw how they were arranged. The bodies were found in one specific area. I saw a new recruit brought cupcakes as a sign of gratitude. I realized these bodies were presented as gifts. The notes on their bodies were indicating such. So the question arises. Who was the gift for and what was the connection. I kept my mouth shut until I learnt more. The last one is wealthy and she is going to inherit a lump sum of money. There have been death threats so I can't rule them out either. Super cop checked my call list and Cleo yelled at him. He saw the calls stopped after October eleven. He asked me why I never made a call afterwards. I smirked internally as I thought to myself, "That's because I use a secure line in my earpiece so no one can find out." I gave him a sad face, "My mom passed away, my in-laws are all dead, my husband and kids are dead too. So I have no one to chat with." He stared for a moment and he walked away. Van Pelt complained and he was told to apologize. Afterwards I went to see the abuse victims. I watched as HE spied on me. He is going to be so frustrated that he is going to pull his hair out. I laughed as I imagined his idiotic expression. I patiently listened as they explained their frustrations and insecurities.

A newbie was petrified that her rapist was harassing her whenever possible. She is triggered to the point that the slightest sound has her jumping in the air. I gave her a hug and moments later her phone rang. She saw that it was an unknown number so I answered on her behalf. I pulled out a sweet wrapper over the speaker. I pretended to be her and threatened to arrest him. I pressed a button and made sure to record his threats. I threw away the wrapper and explained that he has threatened a police officer. I had called Van Pelt and Cleo answered before I answered the phone. She promised to send a patrol car to detain him. The man hung up immediately. Cleo asked me if this was regarding my abuse victims. I sighed in frustration and she said that he won't be a problem ever again. The woman gave me a weak smile as I showed her my badge. I sat down and we continued. Then we sat down to have dinner. Cleo came and she asked to see her. She promised this is the last time she is going to see him. She just wanted confirmation. Afterwards she watched as he was taken away. I told her to take a picture. She is never going to see him ever again. She took a picture. I smiled, "This is called the bye bye slip." She smiled as everyone gave her a hug. We finished dinner and everyone cleaned up. We happily parted ways. I came with muffins and he took one. He made a face and I asked him in front of his sister if I seriously resembled his wife. The woman asked him if he was punishing her indirectly. He said nothing as he drove away. I gave her a ride and she promised to investigate the matter and handle it accordingly. Tanya and the others laughed as I drove home. Some congratulated me for having dual personalities.
