Chapter 64 - Stay hidden

As I made breakfast the news was blaring that a rogue sniper was out on the loose so people were advised to be careful as they go about. The news was vague about everything else. I simply popped on my ear pod and listened to the police band. My roomie came out to see breakfast already waiting for her. The entire living room was neat and tidy and so she gave me a look. She grinned as she sat near the counter, "Had you been a man, I would have married you already. Right now I suppose you fit the category of older sister." I gave her a wink and I prepped her lunch. A philly cheese steak sandwich and a hunk of fries. A steaming flask loaded with strong black coffee. I sat down to eat breakfast. She saw that I was still in pyjamas. I told her that I was not feeling well at work yesterday so I was told to take a few days off to recuperate. She pressed her knuckles on my forehead and said that I was slightly warmer than usual so it is possible that I am coming with the flu. She said that she will grab some spicy chicken soup on her way home. I was ordered to lay down and chill for the rest of the day.

I waited till she left and then called my friends and they said they had sent a holographic projector so I can observe the entire neighborhood with no problem since I had bugged the entire place systemically. I requested a telescope so I can use it as a cover saying that I am outside star gazing. The guys gave some consideration and searched for a decent one. Simultaneously I was told that an SUV with tinted windows was coming to collect me. I asked for the licence plate number for safety purposes and I gave the password for safety reasons. I should get ready. So I got dressed in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. I stepped out to see the old lady Petunia walking her dog Ginger. She gave me a grin and switched to frown. I told her that I was sick I was going to the clinic. I have an Uber collect me and transport me. She wished me a safe trip as she ran indoors to get her cellphone. I quietly glided towards the elevator and walked out the front door to see my ride. He asked for the password and I said Tigris. He opened the door and I was allowed in.

I was taken to a building. The driver gave me a box and told me to exit the car. I hopped out and opened it. Inside was a pair of gloves, a cellphone and an earpiece. I put the cellphone in my pocket as I slipped the ear piece in. I threw the box on the seat as I put on the gloves. I closed the door and tapped the door. The phone buzzed and I answered. Tanya was on the other side of the line. She told me to walk upstairs. I looked up to see a camera. I was explaining my predicament when the red light switched off. The door was stuck so opening it required a little Brite force. I walked into to an empty hall littered plastic wrap, dead rat and the windows were boarded up. On the side was a flight of stairs. I was told very nicely to walk up those steps. I went up three flights before she gave me instructions that I had reached my destination. Then came the instructions for the left turn and right turn. She directed me to a room with no door whatsoever. By the window was a rectangular case. I undid the clasps and flung it open to reveal a sniper rifle with a photograph of my target. I was instructed to shoot a man in a hospital. It took me a moment to find my target. This guy was burly, medium height and still had hair on his scalp. He was yelling at someone over the phone. I took a breath and waited. Coincidentally he opened the window to smoke. I took my shot and I was instructed to get out of there as quickly as possible. My mission was to get back to my apartment in one piece and undetected on foot. I accepted the challenge and made my way out as fast as my legs would let me.

Once on the streets I had to get rid of the gloves so my first stop was at an underpass. I recalled seeing a burning garbage can during my rides. For some reason the fire hazard was still there. I chucked my gloves into the flames and looked around for any sort of disguise. I saw a homeless person sleeping. I quietly plucked off his cap and walked in the direction of my apartment. I reached the halfway mark and Tanya congratulated me. I heard sirens and Tanya assured me that it was for someone else. To prove her point she let me listen to the police band. A few more paces later I was given new instructions. Head towards the city hall where she had the security footage scrubbed so I will remain anonymous. Also they will disguise my face in social media so no one can identify me. A van was waiting for me. I was given a disguise, brand new clothes and a loaded syringe. I was shown a target that was taken to the city hall for questioning but he had bribed someone had slipped out of punishment so I was tasked with unaliving the man. I got out of the van and walked to city hall. I waited as a lawyer was yelling at security for some violation. Soon others started complaining that they had stuff to take care so we started moving. I made it past the security. I quietly tried to search for him. Tanya made it easier by giving me directions. He was one floor above me scrolling through his phone. I had to take the stairwell. A group of plain clothes officers were walking to collect some sort of public documents. A lawyer was walking out huffing and puffing about bureaucracy. I quietly walked upstairs and waited till he was alone and there would no chance that he could give me the slip. With no chance of interruptions I glided towards him and pretended to slip. As he grabbed me to stop my fall I silently injected him with the toxin. I gave him a wink and said my thanks and walked to the vending machine. I obviously didn't get anything but I did pretend to touch the buttons when I was actually touching air. I pretended to be bored and just walked back to the exit.

I calmly walked out of the security check by the front door when he collapsed. The alarm blared as I calmly walked out the door. I was pushed by the sea of people who were anxious to get the heck out before the doors were sealed shut for investigative purposes. It shut behind me as the last batch got out. I calmly walked downstairs and walked across the street. The van was waiting for me at a corner. The man gave me a thumbs up as he opened the door to let me in. The guy was instructed to give me a ride as I changed back to my own clothes. He dropped me off at the nearest clinic. I thanked the man as he gave general directions to my apartment. I got in and saw the place was crowded. Amongst them were kids, elderly, pregnant and obviously junkies. I waited for an hour before the doctor had a chance to treat me. He gave me the usual flu medicine and told me to take plenty of fluids. He wished me well as he walked off to treat his other patients. I walked back to my apartment to hear of five different murders. Two were my doing but the others peeked my interest for educational reasons. I gave her a hug and gave her a reassuring smile before going back to my apartment. I ordered soup and some other items enough for me and my roomie. I called her to let her know that dinner will be waiting for her when she gets home along with a bubble bath. She thanked me profusely but apologized as she explained that she will not be coming tonight since she is swamped with investigating the murders. I asked her which precinct she was and she asked me why I was interested. I said that I am going to call the delivery service and have them deliver hers to where she is. She gave me the address only on the condition that she gets to split the check. I said that I had already paid for so if she wants she can give me in cash when she comes home. She said yes as I called it in and changed the delivery address. Afterwards I sat down to listen to the police band piecing together how the others were killed. I called Tanya and she said that these weren't US Marshal's assets so we have nothing to be concerned about.
