Chapter 124 - The Echo Beneath the Hall

The narrow stone passage stretched ahead.

Silent.

Ancient.

The older Feroz walked without hesitation.

Feroz followed close behind.

For a while...

neither of them spoke.

His thoughts remained trapped inside the chamber they had left behind.

The black book.

The map.

The burning symbol.

Rahim.

And most of all...

his father.

The more he learned about Qadir...

the less he seemed to understand him.

The passage gradually sloped downward.

The air became colder.

The stone walls looked rougher.

Older.

Almost unfinished.

Feroz finally broke the silence.

"Did my father walk this path too?"

The older Feroz continued walking.

"Yes."

Feroz expected another vague answer.

Instead...

the older version of himself added,

"Many times."

That surprised him.

Many times?

Not once.

Not twice.

Many.

"Why?"

The older Feroz slowed slightly.

"For the same reason you are walking it now."

Feroz frowned.

"I don't know why I'm walking it now."

A faint smile appeared.

"Exactly."

The answer irritated him immediately.

The older Feroz noticed.

Yet said nothing.

Several minutes passed.

Then the corridor opened into a vast underground chamber.

Feroz stopped.

The sight before him stole his breath.

The room was enormous.

Larger than the Hall of Questions.

Larger than the Hall of Lives.

Perhaps larger than anything he had seen inside the Learning Path.

The ceiling vanished into darkness.

Hundreds of stone pillars rose toward the unseen roof.

Ancient bridges connected distant platforms.

Golden lanterns floated in the air.

Thousands of them.

Like stars trapped beneath the earth.

At the center of the chamber stood something impossible.

A well.

A single circular stone well.

Nothing protected it.

Nothing surrounded it.

Yet somehow...

everything in the chamber felt built around it.

Feroz stared.

"A well?"

The older Feroz nodded.

"Yes."

"That's what we came here for?"

"Yes."

Feroz blinked.

Of all the things he expected...

a well was not one of them.

The older Feroz continued walking.

The enormous chamber echoed softly around them.

Their footsteps seemed tiny beneath the vast darkness.

As they approached the center...

Feroz noticed something strange.

The lanterns above the well glowed brighter than the others.

Much brighter.

Almost as though they were feeding it light.

"What is it?"

The older Feroz stopped beside the stone edge.

For a long moment...

he simply looked down.

Then he answered.

"The Echo Well."

Feroz stepped closer.

The name immediately made him uneasy.

"Echo of what?"

The older Feroz looked at him.

"Everything."

Feroz sighed.

"That answer is becoming a habit."

A rare laugh escaped the older version of himself.

Then he pointed toward the darkness inside the well.

"Look."

Feroz carefully stepped forward.

Then peered over the edge.

Darkness.

Endless darkness.

He could not see the bottom.

Not even a little.

It felt deeper than any ordinary well.

Far deeper.

Almost impossible.

For several moments...

nothing happened.

Then...

he heard something.

A voice.

Faint.

Very faint.

Feroz froze.

Another voice followed.

Then another.

Whispers.

Hundreds of whispers.

Thousands.

Coming from the darkness below.

His heartbeat quickened.

"What is that?"

The older Feroz answered quietly.

"The past."

Feroz immediately stepped back.

The voices continued rising.

Soft.

Broken.

Incomplete.

Fragments of conversations.

Fragments of lives.

Fragments of moments.

A child laughing.

A woman crying.

A man shouting.

Someone praying.

Someone begging.

Someone saying goodbye.

The sounds overlapped endlessly.

Feroz stared at the well.

Unable to look away.

"Are these memories?"

"Echoes."

The older Feroz corrected.

"Memories fade."

"Echoes remain."

The whispers continued.

Suddenly...

one voice became clearer than the others.

A familiar voice.

Feroz's body froze.

No.

Impossible.

Slowly...

he stepped closer again.

The voice came from somewhere deep below.

Broken.

Distant.

Yet unmistakable.

His heart pounded.

The older Feroz watched silently.

He already knew.

Feroz swallowed.

Then whispered,

"Father?"

The voice below continued.

Too faint to understand.

But familiar.

Painfully familiar.

Qadir.

Feroz's hands tightened.

"Can he hear me?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

"Can I reach him?"

"No."

The older Feroz's voice remained calm.

Feroz looked down again.

The whispers continued.

Endless.

Countless.

The voice disappeared among them.

Lost once more.

His chest felt heavy.

For years...

he had chased his father.

And once again...

he was close enough to hear him.

Yet still unable to reach him.

The older Feroz stepped beside him.

"The Echo Well teaches a difficult lesson."

Feroz did not look away.

"What lesson?"

The answer came softly.

"Not every voice is meant to answer you."

Silence followed.

Feroz hated that answer.

Because part of him knew it was true.

The voices continued rising from the darkness.

Thousands of lives.

Thousands of stories.

All beyond reach.

Then suddenly...

another voice echoed upward.

A woman's voice.

Gentle.

Warm.

Familiar.

Feroz froze again.

His eyes widened.

The voice lasted only a moment.

Then vanished.

But he knew it.

Without doubt.

Mrs. Aliya.

The memory struck him like lightning.

Roshan Orphanage.

Warm food.

Gentle smiles.

A woman who had cared for him when nobody else had.

The voice disappeared.

Gone as quickly as it had come.

Feroz stared into the darkness.

Confused.

Why had he heard her?

Why now?

The older Feroz remained silent.

Watching.

Waiting.

As though the question itself mattered more than the answer.

The whispers continued.

Then...

far below...

something moved.

Not a voice.

Not a memory.

Something else.

Feroz's eyes narrowed.

A faint golden light appeared deep within the darkness.

Very deep.

Almost impossible to see.

The older Feroz's expression instantly changed.

For the second time since meeting him...

real concern appeared in his eyes.

Feroz noticed immediately.

"What is that?"

The older Feroz did not answer.

The golden light flickered again.

Then once more.

Slowly...

it began rising toward them.

From somewhere deep beneath the Echo Well.

And for the first time...

the countless whispers below fell completely silent.
