Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 — Gravity of the Ordinary

Daniel almost canceled.

Twice.

He stood in front of his mirror, staring at himself like he was preparing to negotiate with an alien species instead of meeting a girl he'd already known for years.

"You've stabilized a developing dimension," he muttered. "You can handle dinner."

The faint glow under his skin pulsed.

Not helpful.

He pulled his sleeve down.

Normal. Be normal.

From the couch behind him, Maya's voice came, amused.

"Are you giving yourself a motivational speech again?"

Daniel turned, embarrassed. "It works."

She was leaning on one elbow, smiling — hair slightly messy, wearing one of his oversized shirts she'd stolen months ago and never returned.

The sight grounded him instantly.

Not a civilization.

Not a cosmic bridge.

Just… her.

"You ready?" she asked.

He nodded. "Yeah. I made a reservation."

Her eyebrows shot up. "A reservation? Who are you and what did you do with Daniel?"

"Character development," he said solemnly.

She laughed, and something warm settled in his chest — different from faith energy, softer, steadier.

Later

City lights reflected in the restaurant window. Glass. Soft music. Low conversation hum.

Daniel sat across from Maya, fingers laced together like he was holding back a secret.

Which, technically, he was.

"So," she said, sipping her drink. "You've been… different lately."

Daniel froze for half a second.

"Different how?"

"Quieter. Like you're listening to something I can't hear."

His throat tightened.

Because she was right.

He was listening — to a distant world, to faint pulses of belief, to the subtle presence of the Seer like a star at the edge of perception.

"I've just been thinking," he said carefully.

"About?"

He met her eyes.

How do you explain that you're responsible for an entire reality?

"…About what matters," he finished.

She studied him, then smiled gently. "That's new."

Before he could reply—

A faint tremor passed through his chest.

He inhaled sharply.

Below, in the other universe, a surge of energy moved through the crystal ring — a large gathering, synchronized belief. He felt it like a pressure wave.

Maya leaned forward. "You okay?"

He forced a smile. "Yeah. Just hungry."

The Core's voice whispered faintly:

Emotional grounding stabilizes your resonance.

Daniel focused on Maya's hand resting on the table.

Her presence.

Her breathing.

Her warmth.

The cosmic pressure eased.

"…You help," he said quietly.

"With what?"

"Staying here."

Her expression softened. "Daniel… you know you don't have to carry everything alone, right?"

The words hit harder than she knew.

In another universe, the Seer was his conduit.

Here—

Maybe Maya was something else.

Not a channel of power.

But an anchor.

They walked home under streetlights.

No glowing symbols.

No dimensional fractures.

Just footsteps and cool night air.

Maya bumped his shoulder lightly. "I like this version of you."

"Which one?"

"The one who shows up."

He looked at her, really looked.

The universe he made was growing closer.

Time aligning.

Bridges strengthening.

And suddenly he understood something terrifying and beautiful:

If the worlds ever truly touched…

She would be part of the stakes.

He gently took her hand.

"I'm trying," he said.

She squeezed back. "That's enough."

Above them, the sky looked ordinary.

But Daniel felt two realities turning like gears — slowly, inevitably aligning.

And for the first time, he didn't just fear what he might lose.

He feared what he might have to protect.
