Chapter 5 - C5 Diagon Alley

It was Sunday morning and the Grangers - plus Potter - were waiting for their guide of the day at the living room.

"Who do you think will come, Harry?" Hermione asked as she fidgets on her seat.

"I don't know... another Professor, maybe?" Harry answered. Yet, even as he said so Harry wished that it was Hagrid.

Not only it would be good to see the gentle giant again, but it would also let Harry do things in the Alley that someone, say, Professor McGonagall, would not let him do.

A resounding knock at the door drowned all the other sounds at the house.

"That must be them..." Monica said as she stood up from her spot and headed to the door, the rest of the family right behind her.

As she opened the door, the three Grangers and one Potter found themselves looking up at a tall man in a massive brown overcoat with a huge black bear. The Grangers couldn't help themselves in thinking that the man would hit his head at the ceiling. Harry was just excited that his wish came true.

"Ah, ye are in!" The man said, smiling at the family before him. "Harry! There ye are!"

"Do you know me?" Harry asked fighting the urge to smile.

"Yes, ye must no remember me ut I got to know yer when yer was just a baby." The man explained. "Ye look like your dad but yer have got your mum's eyes."

Harry just smiled.

"Hello, yer must be the Grangers, right?" The giant asked.

"Yes... and would be?" asked Dan.

"Rubeus Hagrid." The man said smiling. "Keeper of the Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts. Are yer ready to go to Diagon Alley?"

An hour later and the Grangers and Harry were now in front of a rather shabby-looking pub, comparatively small and insignificant when compared to the stores on either side of it.

"Just follow me," Hagrid said smiling as he walked to the door of the pub.

As soon as they entered the pub the bartender looked at them - there were barely any people at the establishment - and raising the glass, called. "The usual, Hagrid?"

"Can't Tom, Hogwarts business," Hagrid said.

"Oh, muggle-borns? Very well, you already know the way," Tom said.

Harry knowing that he would be recognized otherwise was wearing a cap and partially hiding behind Dan and Monica. He didn't want to cause commotion nor be mobbed by fans.

The group walked to the back of the pub where Hagrid explained how they could open the entrance for Diagon Alley when they had their wands. Hagrid tapped three times, and to the family's amazement, the wall suddenly opened in front of their eyes.

"Welcome, to Diagon Alley," Hagrid said as he smiled at the family, showing winding streets before them, strange shops, and people in robes walking all over the place.

"Wow..." Hermione said as she glanced around, her parents staring at everything as Hagrid walked along.

"Hagrid... are these 'galleons' and 'sickles' wizarding currency?" Monica asked.

"Yes, but don't worry; ye can change muggle money to wizard money at Gringotts," Hagrid explained, indicating a large white building at the end of the alley. "Ye already have a vault Harry, from yer parents."

The large man fumbled through his pockets until he took out a small golden key.

"Here's the fer the vault," said Hagrid. "Just show it ter the goblins inside and they will take from there."

"Goblins?" The three Grangers said at the same time.

"Yeah, so yer would be mad to try and rob Gringotts," Hagrid said. "They are even meant ter have dragons guarding the vaults. Blimey, I would love a dragon."

"A dragon!" Dan said, staring in shock at Hagrid.

"Wanted one ever since I was a kid," Hagrid said. "Ah, here we go."

A set of white stairs leads up to a set of burnished bronze doors. The doors are flanked by short, long-nosed, long-eared creatures - Goblins - in uniforms of scarlet and gold. Engraved on the door it could be read.

Enter, stranger, but take heed

Of what awaits the sin of greed

For those who take, but do not earn,

Must pay most dearly in their turn.

So if you seek beneath our floors

A treasure that was never yours,

Thief, you have been warned, beware

Of finding more than treasures there.

The group walked through the doors, into the vast marble hall with long counters that ran stretching along its length with doors leading off to vaults passageways. Hundreds of goblins doing their work on each counter.

Reaching the main desk, Hagrid placed a hand down at the table. The goblin sitting there put down his quill and looked up at Hagrid in a relaxed manner, as though this happened all the time.

"Mr. Harry Potter would like to make a withdraw, and his guardian would like to change muggle money for wizarding," Hagrid said.

"Do you have your key, Mr. Potter?" The goblin inquired.

"Right here, sir," Harry said, holding up the key to the goblin who studied briefly. "And we don't need to change currency, I will everything from my vault."

"Harry!" Monica said, the denial ready on her tongue.

"No, Dan, Monica, you have taken me when you didn't have to," Harry said. "Let me repay with this, we can just look at my vault and see if there is enough for both Hermione and me."

Dan gave his wife a look, and they both nodded in agreement.

"Very well," the goblin said, passing it back. "You should note Mr. Potter that you have two vaults. The one you can access now is your Trust Vault that now holds ten thousand galleons, and will be replenished with a thousand galleons on your birthday every year until you are seventeen."

"And the other vault?" Harry wondered why the goblins did not say anything like this the first time. He knew about the second vault, after all, he could access it when he became an adult, but it would have been nice to know of it before.

"The Potter Family's Vault, that now holds around two million galleons," said the goblin.

"Excuse me, but how much is a galleon in muggle currency?" Hermione asked with trepidation.

"At the current exchange rate, Mr. Potter vaults contain over ten million pounds," the goblin stated.

"Ten million..." gasped Dan, while holding Monice who looked ready to faint. Hermione just stared at Harry with her mouth open.

"Well, at least we know I can pay for you," Harry said to Hermione with a sheepish smile.
