"For a while," Kaiden answers. "He needed something from me and I needed him too."
"How'd it go?"
Kaiden is taken aback by the question. He doesn't expect a stranger to ask, but staring at Adam's clear eyes, he figures out that it's out of curiosity and nothing else. For a moment, he feels the urge to lie—to say it's fine, like how he always says to Lucy and his auntie. Words like 'I'm fine' and 'everything's okay' rolls so easily off his tongue that sometimes, sometimes it feels like the truth.
Instead, he looks at his belly without answering. He doesn't think it's big, not this far along, but the bump is obvious against his small frame, especially when he's sitting down. Nobody can deny his state when they look at him like this.
Adam follows his line of sight, brows furrowed, not quite understanding the reason for the sudden silence. Then, Kaiden gets to watch a face color-changing act as Adam turns pale before his whole face turns red. He averts his gaze, coughing once, twice.
