Xavier Warren looked at Eleanor Whittaker's painful expression, and even tolerated everything, being a hidden lover just to be by his side. His gaze wavered slightly; after all, she was a woman he once loved.
But these fluctuations and emotions were simply sympathy.
A long time ago, he felt that besides Eleanor Whittaker, he probably wouldn't ever again seriously take responsibility for a woman.
Only the things Eleanor did ensured that there was absolutely no possibility between them.
Later, he met Nora Harrow.
At first, he didn't have any strong feelings, and even found her somewhat annoying, until Nora Harrow became pregnant. He wanted to take responsibility, partly because he found having a child intriguing, and partly because he wanted to use the child to stop entanglements with Eleanor Whittaker.
No man would want the woman they love to use him to spy on another man.
Along with sympathy, there was also a hint of amusement.
