Dragon King's Harem Chapter 369. Chaos II
The trap was working. The Reavers' advance was halted as they found themselves caught in the quicksand. The soldiers, seeing the effectiveness of the strategy, rallied with renewed vigor.
"Spearmen, to the front!" Viperax commanded, his voice cutting through the din of battle. "Target those stuck in the trap! Archers, pick off those still advancing!"
The spearmen moved forward, their long weapons thrusting into the struggling Reavers.
The archers loosed volley after volley, their arrows finding their marks with deadly precision. The coordination and discipline of Viperax's troops began to show, the chaotic melee giving way to a more controlled and effective defense.
Despite the success of the Quicksand Trap, the battle was far from over. The Reavers, though momentarily halted, were relentless. Those at the back began to circle around the trap, seeking new avenues of attack. Viperax could see their movements, their dark forms shifting in the shadows.
"Hold the line!" he shouted, moving to reinforce the flanks. "Don't let them breach our defenses!"
The soldiers held their ground.
The Reavers, now aware of the trap, approached more cautiously. The battle became a tense standoff.
Viperax, his mind still racing, scanned the battlefield for any sign of the mysterious figure he had glimpsed earlier. He was convinced that Argod or one of his subordinates was behind this. The timing, the coordination—it all pointed to a deliberate strategy.
A sudden movement caught his eye. In the distance, near the edge of the forest, a shadowy figure darted between the trees. It was too fluid, too purposeful to be one of the mindless Reavers. Viperax's heart quickened. This was his chance.
"Chief!" he called out, summoning one of his elite officers. "Take a squad and follow me. We're going after that figure!"
The chief nodded, quickly gathering a group of soldiers. Viperax led the way, his eyes fixed on the retreating shadow. They moved swiftly, weaving through the chaos of the battlefield, their focus singular.
They approached the edge of the forest, and the sounds of battle faded slightly, replaced by the rustling of leaves and the distant calls of night creatures. Viperax's senses were heightened, every nerve on edge as he pursued the mysterious figure.
"There!" Viperax hissed, pointing to the shadowy figure moving swiftly through the trees. The figure was almost ethereal, gliding silently and with incredible speed. Viperax, the chief, and their squad launched into pursuit, but it quickly became apparent that this was no ordinary foe.
The figure darted through the forest, leaping over fallen logs and weaving between the trees with an agility that seemed almost supernatural. Viperax's breath came in ragged gasps as he pushed himself to keep up, his mind racing with thoughts of who—or what—this could be. 'Argod, if this is one of your tricks, I'll make you pay dearly for it,' he thought, his anger fueling his determination.
The forest was a labyrinth of shadows and shifting moonlight. Branches clawed at them as they ran, and the sounds of the battle behind them grew fainter, replaced by the eerie silence of the woods. The figure ahead seemed to know the terrain intimately, moving with a confidence that suggested it had a plan, a destination.
Viperax's frustration grew with each passing moment. The speed and silence of the figure were unnerving. He could feel his soldiers starting to lag, their earlier vigor sapped by the relentless pace. "Keep up!" he barked, his voice harsh and breathless. "We can't let it escape!"
The chief, running beside him, nodded grimly. "Whoever this is, they know what they're doing. We need to be careful, Your Majesty. We're getting far from the camp."
Viperax knew the chief was right, but the thought of letting the figure get away was intolerable. He had to know who was behind this attack, and he was convinced that this figure held the key. 'I can't let it escape,' he thought again, his mind replaying the recent humiliations he had suffered at the Dragon King's hands.
Minutes passed. The chase continued, the figure always just out of reach. They moved deeper into the forest, the trees growing denser and the underbrush thicker.
The moonlight barely penetrated the canopy now, casting the world in a dim, ghostly glow. Viperax's lungs burned, and his legs ached, but he pressed on, driven by sheer willpower.
Suddenly, the figure changed direction, veering sharply to the left. Viperax and his squad followed, their movements less fluid, more forced. The terrain grew rougher, the ground uneven and littered with rocks and roots that threatened to trip them with every step. The figure seemed to float over these obstacles, while Viperax and his men stumbled and cursed.
"Spread out!" Viperax ordered. "Don't let it slip through!"
The soldiers obeyed, fanning out to try and encircle the target. Viperax could feel the frustration mounting in his men. They were skilled warriors, trained for direct combat, not for chasing phantoms through the forest.
'Why is it leading us away?' Viperax wondered. 'Is it trying to separate us from the camp? Or is there something here it wants us to find?' He had to consider the possibility that this could be a trap, that the figure was baiting them into an ambush. But he couldn't turn back now, not when he was so close to answers.
They burst into a small clearing, and for a moment, Viperax thought they had lost the figure. He scanned the area, his eyes narrowing as he tried to pierce the darkness. Then he saw it—a flash of movement at the edge of the clearing, heading towards a rocky outcrop.
"There!" he shouted, pointing. "Cut it off!"
The soldiers sprinted towards the rocks, their fatigue forgotten in the heat of the chase. The figure, realizing it was being cornered, quickened its pace, but the rough terrain slowed it down just enough for Viperax and his men to gain ground.
Viperax's heart pounded in his chest as he closed the distance. 'Almost there,' he thought, his mind racing with possibilities. 'I'll finally get the answers I need.'
