Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Final Performance

Kevin asked to leave the hospital.

Just for one day.

One last show.

Riverside Park.

Where it all started.

Everyone came.

Linda and her chaotic children.

Tina.

Officer Ramirez.

Mr. Doyle.

Derek.

Maya.

Even the old woman from the duck pond appeared like a side quest refusing to end.

Kevin wore the red nose.

The old shoes.

The same ridiculous rainbow wig.

Weaker now.

Thinner.

But still Kevin.

He stood in front of everyone.

Smiled.

And said:

"Thank you for attending what may legally be my final public embarrassment."

They laughed.

Good.

He wanted laughter.

Not pity.

He performed badly.

Perfectly badly.

Dropped juggling balls.

Messed up card tricks.

Honking the bike horn like an idiot.

People laughed until they cried.

So did he.

At the end, he sat by the duck pond.

Sun setting.

Orange sky.

Peaceful.

Maya sat beside him.

Quiet.

Kevin looked at the water.

"You know… I thought becoming a clown would make people like me."

She smiled softly.

"And?"

He shrugged.

"Turns out it just helped me like myself."

That felt bigger.

The ducks floated by like unpaid critics.

Kevin leaned back.

Tired.

Very tired.

But strangely okay.

He whispered:

"I think… this is enough."

Maya squeezed his hand.

He smiled.

One last time.

Small.

Real.

And Kevin the Clown—

the boy nobody noticed—

died with people laughing nearby.

Which, honestly,

was exactly how he would've wanted it.
