Melisca suddenly lunged. This time, with Krystalis in her hands. She swung it clumsily. There was no technique, only instinct. The blade sliced through the air with frightening ease.
Ezekiel twisted away. The dagger missed his shoulder by inches.
She swung again.
He reached for her wrist. The blade grazed across his open palm. A thin crimson line appeared. Then blood spilled freely between his fingers. Ezekiel hissed and withdrew instinctively. His breathing had become ragged. Each breath sounded heavier than the last.
Melisca pressed forward relentlessly. She attacked faster, more violently, as though merely holding the dagger had awakened something inside her.
Astrid's eyes never left Krystalis. Something wasn't right. She could feel it. The engraved crescent moons seemed to shimmer almost imperceptibly.
