Chapter 18 - Shades of the Rodent

After his all-so-bold outburst at the meeting, I refrained from saying a word again. The amount of embarrassment I was feeling was comparable only to his massive ego.

The deal was postponed, after contract review and I sat with him in the car, on the way to the hotel. His eyes were glued straight ahead, almost as if he was driving the car. Good thing he wasn't.

To be honest, I was very annoyed with him. But to be realistic, I'm always annoyed when it comes to him. Who the hell did he think he was? And who gave him the right to meddle in someone's sexual business. I mean how does he know whether I am fuckable or not?. Did he ask?.

My face began to twitch in anger and I took a deep breath to calm down.

"What is with the spasms?", I heard him ask. I turned to look at him but didn't utter a word.

" Maybe you should slow down on the caffeine", he continued.

There he goes again, jumping to conclusions. It isn't like I consume a gallon of coffee a day, I mean maybe eight cups is a little bit much. I get it, really I do but who was it that kept me up all night for 3days for a business deal that has been postponed?.

Besides, I needed the caffeine in order to keep up with his outrageous demands.

Blaze turned to look at Amy. Her little pout was honestly cute and he licked his lips as he stared at her.

She huffed and he found himself almost smiling. And then as if on cue, he slipped his emotionless mask back in place before he got caught slacking.

His phone dinged and he pulled it out to stare at the screen.

"I met someone today B" Blaze smiled at the raw attempt to make him jealous and admired the attempt.

"was he called I-made-that up?", he texted back.

"no, you wish! "

"On the contrary, you wish he was me", he continued

"and give you the satisfaction? You're a good catch B, but I'd pick Tray over you"

"Baby you know that's a lie, you couldn't even if you tried"

Amy saw him tap incessantly on his phone from her periphery and felt ignored. It was a weird feeling, especially given the fact that she could accurately guess who the other person would be. The mystery girlfriend of Blaze. The smile on his face was evidence enough. He had never smiled at her like that before. In fact she was convinced, he only reserved his frustrations specially for her. Served with a side of

The phone suddenly rang and Amy saw his smile deepen before he picked up. He stared into the phone and quirked an eyebrow at the screen.

"Couldn't wait to see me love?", he asked in a sickening but sweet tone that made Amy want to gag

Guess he couldn't wait to see her face, Amy thought dryly

"you know I'm always desperate to see you"

She does sound awfully desperate, Amy thought again as Blaze coincidentally nodded in agreement. She could feel his ego inflate exponentially and huffed in tragedy. Blaze turned briefly to look at her and then back to his screen.

"When do you come back from Canada?", he asked instead

"Sometime this month, don't miss me too much", the sweet voice of the woman replied

"If you promise to miss me every second"

The arrogance of it all. Perhaps, she'll be the distraction he needs so I can be free, Amy thought sarcastically hoping desperately for some reprieve from the rodent called Blaze. He was a nuisance and a major thorn in my flesh, and if he could be someone else's problem for at least a day, she would gladly take it.

"You know that's not impossible, if I miss you any more than I already do right now, I'd pass out and die"

Cringy. And Tragic. Amy almost said those words aloud.

"You know where I'll be when you get back"

"Alright love, I've got to hop into my meeting now"

Blaze nodded and then cut the call. Then he turned to his secretary who had a rather weird expression on her face

"you're awfully quiet"; he said to me. I smiled in response, hoping to get off his radar but he was determined to ruin my mood even further.

"I just figured you wouldn't want background noise from an unfuckable secretary to filter into your all important call Sir", she responded before she could stop herself. Her tone was sharp and biting.

Blaze frowned lightly

"are you still annoyed about that?. Woman, you hold a mean grudge. Besides, I think you got the wrong idea"

She huffed with a fake smile, "did I?, you clearly looked into that man's face and told him I am not woman enough to be bedded but now you call me woman?"

Blaze licked his lips in exasperation. Of course he admitted that it was wrong and harsh of him to say those words to Shade about Amy. But there was no way he was going to admit that he had been jealous and that he didn't want any other man looking at his woman.

Even if she was only a woman he paid to work for him. As a secretary. She was his.

"Shade is a scum bug. The low of the low, he deals with the likes of Amani Vidal. You don't want him in your bed"

"And you get to decide who gets to climb into my bed?, why do you even care? that is absurd and unprofessional", I countered in annoyance

"Unprofessional? You work for me, I would rather bite my own head and spit it out than let my secretary whore around with Shade Watkins" Amy felt the weight of his words crash on her like lead, fueling her anger and provoking her to blur the line between professional and unprofessional.

"Ah, right Mr. Lockheart. And yet you somehow sleepwalked and climbed your way into mine like a whore"
