Chapter 30 - Defensive Barrier Holds

The so called calm behavior Adam displayed was a subconscious adaptation from his previous life; one spent in a constant dark world, where raging emotions were used to being suppressed, with no outlet to vent to.

In a world where his emotions raged like an inferno, he learned how to control the flames; lest he be devoured by it and become insane.

It was the momentary control over his raging emotions, during his moments of rebirth, that allowed his clarity to take over.

This, in turn, prevented his rampage, that allowed Adam to find the nexus point swiftly, and make Kaelgor's search of him fall short.

When Lord Gorael was notified of activity at the basin, he acted swiftly and sent his senses to complete the plan he had instructed to Kaelgor many years before hand.

A moment too soon for the Arch Devil, while the other was a little too late.

A single difference had cause a domino effect that even Arch Devil Gorael hadn't accounted for.

A subtle shift in fate's game of chess…

The rumbling of the 500 strong army had long announced their presence.

The tide of berserkers had immediately caught Adam's eye once they stopped at the basin's edge, his blood red stare locked onto Kaelgor's across the sizzling red hue of hell.

No more words were spoken.

Kaelgor couldn't be bothered to try and discuss with the strange newborn once again. He lifted his arm and waved it casually.

A section of his unit split from the rest, a wave of a hundred berserker demons began to charge towards the basin's nexus point.

Their figures blurred into dark streaks of carnage and mayhem as they darted toward the gleaming barrier. Their hot breaths and steaming bodies formed a faint white fog trail as they charged forward; their bloodlust a palpable force, visible in the air.

Seeing the intimidating attack of the 100, a flicker of doubt crossed Adam's face.

He was unsure of whether the barrier would hold. His hand was silently placed on the pedestal to activate the attack rune if all else failed.

Nervous whimpers of weaker demons rang out as they scurried toward the obelisk, a faint sense of security only forming when they were near it and their lord.

In a matter of seconds, the berserker army closed the distance and slammed their heavy metal weapons down upon the shimmering barrier.

"Bang!" A deafening boom resounded within the valley.

Sparks and dust were swept up into a cloud.

The attack was unsuccessful.

The defensive barrier held, the shimmering wall of black energy absorbing their impact. The demons slammed against it, and then had their bodies seemingly bursting into corrupted mana before being shot backward.

It was a violent, but ultimately futile attack.

Thankfully, for Kaelgor, there were no major injuries.

Kaelgor watched from a distance, his expression a mixture of dissatisfaction and grudging amazement. The barrier was stronger than he had initially thought.

It was a clear confirmation that Adam had indeed manipulated Gorael's original runes. Otherwise, a normal defensive rune would never reach such level of power, even with the nexus as the source of power.

Watching the shimmering defensive barrier, a torrent of thoughts coursed through Kaelgor's mind. He knew that he needed to change or alter his tactics.

A less experienced devil would have gathered his entire force and charged, but Kaelgor was a cunning tactician with many years of experience.

He had no hope of trying to convince Adam again, and the option of informing the other two peak lesser devils and combining their strength to forcibly overcome the barrier was not one he considered.

After all, there was a limit on how powerful a basic defense rune was.

A normal defense rune would only be able to withstand a couple attacks from a peak-tier demon. Kaelgor refused to believe that the barrier would hold if a thousand peak rank 1 demons were to attack simultaneously.

Yet, Kaelgor didn't want to share the glory.

He knew that even if he won, the fight would be a costly one, and he refused to share the glory of the nexus point with the other two peak lesser devils who resided in Gorael's territory.

No, he would deal with this himself, and he would do it without risking his own valuable forces...

A malevolent smile etched itself onto his face as a low, creepy laughter echoed throughout the basin.

He acted immediately.

He left a large group of his with his most trusted subordinate to oversee the basin and departed on a crusade to 'recruit' more devils.

He didn't seek out the strong; he sought out the weak, the newborns, and the rogue devils with no faction.

He would hunt them down and give them a choice: either submit and join his army, or be consumed by it.

Even the weakest devil was stronger than a peak rank 1 demon.

With the promise of rewards and the ability to command their own group, Kaelgor believed that he could convince many to join him.

Another thought flashed within his mind, 'Now that Lord Gorael is done with his plans, we can start recruiting devils once again.'

The hold on recruiting devils was all for the goal of directing tension and attention away from Lord Gorael's territory. Such plans were no longer in action.

Ambitious plans to grow a force before heading deeper into hell's abyss festered within his mind.

But before that, he would return with an army of new, disposable soldiers to wear down Adam's defenses!

His massive 4 meter tall body, clad in black abyssal armor, took thundering steps as he disappeared over the basins edge.

Adam gaze traced the hulking figure of Kaelgor marching away.

His eyes narrowed, and a cold satisfaction spread across his face.

He was unaware of Kaelgor's exact thoughts, but he knew with the innate cunning of a devil that his opponent would come back prepared.

Adam's demonic gaze then drifted back to the obelisk, a triumphant smirk on his lips.

'Still, it seems that he hasn't realized that I have an attack rune.' Adam thought as he walked back to the relieved demons.

The running thoughts were soon swept away by a wave of cold focus as Adam calmly started to help fill in the runes on the obelisk.

His precise, deliberate actions were a silent command, a leader taking the lead; a reminder to the rest that work still needed to be done.

The demons, recovered from the state of shock and fear, started moving around the area within the barrier. Their actions and work more limited now, their primary instinct to remain close to their new leader.

Still, the efficiency of over 200 demons working busily was a sight to behold.

But the peace didn't last as long as Adam initially thought it would.

The rhythmic sound of digging and chopping, was soon drowned out by another demonic charge.

Only this time, the charge weren't as heavy, nor as disciplined.

They were a frantic, stumbling, chaotic charge.

Roars and shrieks, alongside the sound of flesh hitting the hard floor, disturbed the otherwise peaceful scene...
