Chapter 235 - We Cannot Stay

Chapter 235 — We Cannot Stay

Queen Hebe stood at the highest balcony of Asteria's central hall.

Below her, the city looked almost normal.

Almost.

The eastern district still carried the scars from Persephone's attack.

Broken carts had been dragged into piles.

Shattered stone had been cleared from the streets.

Several buildings had temporary wooden supports holding their walls upright.

People were repairing what they could.

But Hebe wasn't looking at the damage.

She was looking beyond it.

At the sky.

Nothing moved there.

No angels.

No demons.

No monsters.

No armies.

That was precisely why she was worried.

She had ruled Asteria long enough to understand that silence from powerful beings was rarely peace.

Usually, it meant someone was deciding what to do next.

Footsteps approached behind her.

Brook entered the balcony.

"You wanted me?"

Hebe didn't turn.

"I want all of you."

Brook frowned.

"All?"

"Xcution."

He looked back toward the doorway.

Gabriel entered first.

Then Sera.

Henry followed with Charon sitting lazily across his shoulder.

Tala came after them.

Crowley was last.

He looked at Hebe.

"You have the expression."

Hebe glanced at him.

"What expression?"

"The one rulers get before telling everyone something unpleasant."

Hebe sighed.

"I suppose that saves time."

She turned toward them.

"You cannot stay."

Silence.

Henry looked around.

"Here?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Asteria is becoming a battlefield."

Gabriel's expression became serious.

"No one has attacked."

"Yet."

Hebe walked toward the edge of the balcony.

She pointed toward the eastern district.

"Yesterday, something entered my city to test Brook."

Brook's jaw tightened.

"Persephone."

"Yes."

Hebe pointed toward the sky.

"An archangel descended."

Gabriel said nothing.

Then toward the distant horizon.

"And somewhere beyond my borders, someone powerful is watching."

Crowley's eyes narrowed.

"Silvet."

Hebe looked at him.

"You know who it is?"

"Yes."

"That should concern me."

"It should."

Hebe stared at him.

Crowley shrugged.

"I've never been particularly good at making people feel better."

Sera crossed her arms.

"If we leave, where do we go?"

Hebe looked at Brook.

"Anywhere but here."

Brook stepped forward.

"This is your city."

"Yes."

"And you're asking us to leave because of something we didn't cause."

"No."

Hebe's voice softened.

"I'm asking you to leave because I cannot guarantee what will come looking for you."

Brook didn't answer.

Hebe continued.

"Asteria has survived wars. Plagues. Abominations. Things older than this kingdom."

She looked at Gabriel.

"But I have never had Heaven and Hell watching the same person from opposite directions."

Gabriel lowered his eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Hebe shook her head.

"This isn't your fault."

Her gaze moved to Brook.

"Neither is this."

Brook looked away.

"That doesn't make it better."

"No."

Hebe smiled sadly.

"It doesn't."

Henry stepped forward.

"So we're running?"

Crowley snorted.

"We're relocating."

"That's running."

"It's running with dignity."

Charon raised one small hand from Henry's shoulder.

"Running."

Henry sighed.

"Thank you, Charon."

"Welcome."

Sera almost smiled.

Then she looked at Hebe.

"How long do you think we have?"

Hebe didn't answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

"Not long."

Brook looked toward the city.

People were still repairing their homes.

Children were still playing.

A woman was sweeping broken glass from a doorway.

He watched her for several seconds.

"If we leave…"

"They may follow," Hebe said.

Brook turned.

"And if we stay?"

Hebe looked directly at him.

"They come here."

That settled it.

Brook nodded.

"Then we'll leave."

Gabriel looked at him.

"You're sure?"

"No."

Gabriel's mouth twitched.

"Good answer."

Brook glanced at him.

"I don't think there's a good answer anymore."

Crowley stepped beside them.

"There hasn't been one for a while."

Tala remained silent.

She looked down at the stone beneath her feet.

Then at the city.

Her expression was distant.

"The Earth remembers places," she said.

Everyone looked at her.

She continued quietly.

"If we stay, this place will remember us."

Brook frowned.

"And that's bad?"

"No."

Tala looked toward him.

"But if Heaven comes…"

Her eyes shifted toward Gabriel.

"If Hell comes…"

Then toward Brook.

"And if something else follows…"

She touched the balcony wall.

"The ground will remember all of it."

Hebe understood immediately.

"Then you agree?"

Tala nodded.

"We should go."

Brook looked at the horizon.

For a moment, he wondered where they could possibly go where the world wasn't already waiting.

Then he stopped himself.

That wasn't the question.

They didn't need somewhere safe.

They needed somewhere that wasn't already becoming a target.

Sera began gathering her books.

Henry adjusted Charon on his shoulder.

Gabriel looked over the city one last time.

Crowley watched him.

"You're attached."

Gabriel smiled faintly.

"I like it here."

"You've been here a short time."

"Doesn't mean I can't."

Crowley nodded.

Then quietly said,

"That's going to get harder."

Gabriel looked at him.

"I know."

Hebe stepped forward.

"There is a road north."

Crowley raised an eyebrow.

"North?"

"Old roads. Mostly abandoned."

"Perfect."

"It's not safe."

"Even better."

Hebe ignored him.

"It will take you away from the main routes."

Brook looked toward Gabriel.

"You coming?"

Gabriel smiled.

"I said I was staying."

Brook nodded.

He didn't need anything else.

They began leaving.

Hebe watched them disappear through the doorway one by one.

Henry was talking quietly to Charon.

Sera was already reorganizing her notes.

Tala moved silently.

Crowley and Gabriel walked together, their conversation too quiet to hear.

Brook remained behind for a moment.

He looked back at Hebe.

"Thank you."

She shook her head.

"Don't thank me yet."

Brook frowned.

"Why?"

Hebe looked toward the sky.

"Because if Asteria survives what comes next, then you can thank me."

Brook followed her gaze.

The sky remained empty.

For now.

He nodded.

Then left.

The doors closed behind him.

Hebe stood alone.

The palace was quiet.

The city beyond it was not.

Asteria continued repairing itself.

But something had changed.

The people didn't know it yet.

They didn't know why strange forces had begun circling their kingdom.

They didn't know why an archangel had descended.

They didn't know why a man from the forest watched them from beyond the walls.

They only knew that the group who had brought both danger and protection to their city was leaving.

Hebe placed one hand against the balcony stone.

"Go," she whispered.

Not because she wanted them gone.

Because she wanted the city alive when they returned.

Far beyond Asteria, beneath the trees, Silvet watched the road.

He saw them leave.

He did not move.

He simply watched.

And when Brook finally disappeared beyond the city's northern road, Silvet turned away.

The pieces were moving.

Good.

Let them.

Asteria would no longer be the center.

Not yet.

But the battlefield had begun choosing its shape.
