Chapter 226 - Gaia

Chapter 226 — Gaia

Brook didn't tell anyone about the woman.

Not immediately.

He spent the morning pretending nothing had happened.

It wasn't difficult.

Asteria had become very good at pretending things were normal.

People walked through the streets carrying supplies.

Guards changed shifts.

Merchants opened damaged stalls.

Children ran between buildings that still carried scars from battles.

Life continued.

Brook understood that now.

The world didn't stop simply because something impossible had happened inside him.

Sometimes it just kept moving.

He sat at the edge of the courtyard, watching sunlight fall across the stone.

His hand rested over the fourth mark.

It was quiet.

Too quiet.

Brook had seen her.

He knew that.

The memory hadn't been a dream.

He remembered her eyes.

Her bare feet.

The roots around her.

The feeling of something ancient moving beneath the darkness.

And most importantly—

the feeling that she had been there before the others.

Before Michael.

Before Lucifer.

Before Death had become part of his inner world.

Brook looked at his hand.

"Who are you?"

Nothing.

He waited.

Still nothing.

"Helpful."

"Talking to yourself?"

Brook looked up.

Gabriel stood behind him.

Brook lowered his hand.

"No."

Gabriel looked at him.

"You were."

"I was thinking."

"Out loud."

"Still thinking."

Gabriel smiled.

Brook shook his head.

"You always do that."

"Do what?"

"Appear."

"I walked."

"You appeared."

Gabriel sat beside him.

For a few moments, neither spoke.

Then Gabriel looked at Brook's hand.

"You felt something."

Brook glanced at him.

"How do you know?"

"Your expression."

Brook looked away.

"Nothing."

Gabriel didn't challenge him.

That made Brook glance back.

"You aren't going to ask?"

"If you want to tell me."

Brook studied him.

Then shook his head.

"Not yet."

Gabriel nodded.

"Alright."

Brook frowned.

"That's it?"

"That's it."

"You don't want to know?"

"Of course I do."

"Then why aren't you asking?"

"Because wanting to know doesn't give me the right to know."

Brook stared at him.

For some reason, that answer stayed with him.

He looked toward the garden.

Tala was there.

Kneeling beside a patch of damaged soil.

Her fingers were pressed into the dirt.

Brook watched her for a moment.

Then stood.

"I'm going to talk to Tala."

Gabriel nodded.

"I'll stay here."

Brook walked away.

Tala didn't look up when Brook approached.

"You saw her."

Brook stopped.

"What?"

Tala's fingers pressed deeper into the soil.

"The Earth felt you searching."

Brook slowly crouched beside her.

"Who?"

Tala finally looked at him.

"The one you keep feeling."

Brook's heartbeat quickened.

"You know?"

"Not enough."

"Then what do you know?"

Tala looked down.

"I know the difference between myself and what lives inside you."

Brook waited.

"You are the Vessel," he said.

Tala nodded.

"And the fourth…"

She stopped.

Brook noticed.

"The fourth what?"

Tala shook her head.

"I don't have a name."

"Neither do I."

The earth beneath them shifted slightly.

Tala's eyes lowered.

"Maybe it doesn't want one."

Brook frowned.

"Everything has a name."

"No."

Tala touched the soil.

"Some things existed before people learned how to name them."

Brook thought of the woman.

"She feels old."

"She is."

"How old?"

Tala looked at him.

"Older than your questions."

Brook sighed.

"That's not helpful."

"I know."

He smiled faintly.

"Everyone around me has terrible answers."

Tala almost smiled.

Then the soil beneath her hand pulsed.

Brook felt it.

His fourth mark warmed.

Tala's expression changed.

"She's listening."

Brook looked down.

"To us?"

"To you."

The pulse came again.

Brook stood.

"I need to go back."

Tala rose with him.

"Don't force it."

"I'm not."

"Brook."

He looked at her.

"You can't make the Earth reveal something before it's ready."

Brook nodded.

"I understand."

"Do you?"

"Not really."

Tala smiled faintly.

"Good."

Brook frowned.

"Why is that good?"

"Because understanding something you don't understand is dangerous."

Brook considered that.

Then walked away.

That night, Brook entered the inner world deliberately.

He didn't know how he knew how to do it.

He simply closed his eyes.

Breathed.

And reached inward.

Darkness surrounded him.

The same place.

The same impossible emptiness.

But tonight, something was different.

Michael's light was distant.

Lucifer's fire burned beside it.

Death remained separated from them.

And the fourth presence—

was there.

Brook looked toward the darkness.

"You know I can feel you."

Nothing.

He took a step.

"I saw you."

Nothing.

"I'm not here to fight."

The darkness remained still.

Brook waited.

Then—

roots emerged from the ground.

Slowly.

One by one.

They curled around his feet without touching him.

The woman appeared in the distance.

Brook's breath caught.

She was exactly as he remembered.

Bare feet.

Long hair.

Roots surrounding her.

Older than the darkness itself.

But tonight, she seemed weaker.

The edges of her form flickered.

Brook took a step toward her.

"You aren't fully awake."

Her eyes opened.

Brook felt the truth of it.

She wasn't truly standing there.

Not completely.

This was only a portion of her.

A shadow of something much larger.

Brook's expression softened.

"You're still sleeping."

The woman looked at him.

The darkness beneath her shifted.

Brook suddenly felt something.

A word.

Not spoken.

Not heard.

Felt.

He closed his eyes.

"Gaia."

The inner world went completely still.

Michael's light stopped moving.

Lucifer's flames froze.

Even the darkness surrounding Death seemed to pause.

Brook opened his eyes.

The woman was looking directly at him.

"Gaia."

This time the word felt different.

It wasn't a guess.

It was recognition.

A name rising from somewhere deeper than language.

The woman slowly lifted her head.

Her lips moved.

No sound came.

But Brook understood.

Yes.

Brook stared.

"That's your name."

The woman remained still.

"Gaia."

The name echoed through the inner world.

The ground responded.

A pulse moved beneath Brook's feet.

Once.

Then again.

The fourth mark burned brightly.

Brook stumbled.

He caught himself.

"Okay."

He looked at her.

"Gaia."

Her eyes remained open.

But they were fading.

Brook realized something.

"You're not staying."

The woman shook her head.

Barely.

"You can't."

Another faint shake.

Brook frowned.

"Why?"

The answer came through the ground.

Not words.

A feeling.

Too early.

Brook froze.

"Too early?"

Gaia looked at him.

The darkness beneath her feet cracked.

Not physically.

Conceptually.

Brook suddenly felt the wrongness of it.

Something had happened.

Something had awakened out of order.

He saw it.

Not as a memory.

As a pattern.

The natural sequence had been broken.

Something that should have come first had been forced to wait.

Other Sources had awakened instead.

Michael.

Lucifer.

Death.

The Earth had been left behind.

Brook's eyes widened.

"You were supposed to come first."

Gaia's eyes remained on him.

Brook understood.

"You were supposed to prepare me."

A faint pulse.

"You were supposed to root me."

Another.

"But I awakened the others first."

Silence.

Brook looked at his hands.

"So I messed up the order."

Gaia didn't blame him.

That somehow made it worse.

Brook looked at her.

"Did I hurt you?"

Gaia slowly shook her head.

"No."

The word didn't come from her mouth.

It came from the Earth beneath him.

Brook swallowed.

"Then why does it feel wrong?"

Gaia looked toward Michael.

Then Lucifer.

Then Death.

Her gaze returned to Brook.

The message was clear.

They had awakened too soon.

Not because they were wrong.

Not because Gaia was weak.

Because Brook had arrived at his own power in the wrong order.

Brook's expression tightened.

"Can you fix it?"

Gaia looked at him.

She didn't move.

Didn't answer.

Brook understood.

"No."

Not yet.

She wasn't awake enough.

Brook took another step.

"Can you stay?"

Gaia's form flickered.

For one terrifying second, she almost disappeared.

Brook reached toward her.

His fingers stopped inches from her hand.

He didn't touch her.

He remembered Tala's warning.

Don't force it.

So he lowered his hand.

"Okay."

Gaia's eyes softened.

Brook smiled faintly.

"I'll wait."

Her form began to fade.

Before she disappeared completely, Brook heard something.

One word.

Quiet.

Ancient.

Female.

"Brook."

His eyes widened.

Then she was gone.

The roots sank into the darkness.

The fourth mark dimmed.

Brook remained standing alone.

He looked toward Michael's distant light.

Then Lucifer's fire.

Then Death's separate darkness.

None of them spoke.

For once, Brook didn't need them to.

He understood enough.

The fourth presence had a name.

Gaia.

She had been meant to come first.

She had been meant to root him before the other powers awakened.

But Brook had arrived out of order.

And now something ancient was trying to catch up.

Brook opened his eyes.

He was back in his room.

Moonlight spilled through the window.

He sat quietly for a long time.

Then he looked toward the floor.

For the first time, he wondered what the world would have been like if Gaia had awakened first.

He wondered what kind of person he would have become.

And somewhere beneath Asteria—

the Earth remembered the question.
