Chapter 220 - The First Morning After

Chapter 220 — The First Morning After

Morning came quietly to Asteria.

No alarms.

No screaming.

No armies descending from the sky.

No gates opening beneath the city.

Just sunlight.

For the first time since Gabriel's arrival, the city looked almost normal.

Almost.

Brook stood in the courtyard with a cup of water in his hand, staring at the sky.

The strange opening above Asteria had faded.

The light was gone.

But Brook could still feel something.

A pressure.

A memory of what had happened.

He took a drink.

"You're thinking too loudly."

Brook turned.

Gabriel was sitting on the edge of the fountain.

"I didn't say anything."

"You didn't have to."

Brook stared at him.

"Is that an angel thing?"

Gabriel smiled.

"No."

"Then what is it?"

"Experience."

Brook looked back toward the sky.

Gabriel watched him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

The courtyard slowly came alive around them.

Henry walked across the far side with Charon hanging from his shoulder.

Sera was carrying several books.

Crowley was already awake, looking like he hadn't slept at all.

Tala stood near the garden.

Everyone was there.

Everyone except—

Brook paused.

He could feel them.

Michael.

Lucifer.

Death.

And something deeper.

Something he still couldn't name.

He looked down at his arm.

The fourth mark was barely visible.

Gabriel noticed.

"It hasn't settled."

Brook nodded.

"Apparently."

"How do you feel?"

"Fine."

Gabriel smiled.

"That's not what I asked."

Brook sighed.

"Tired."

"Better."

"That's your standard?"

"Usually."

Brook laughed quietly.

Then he became serious again.

"You know what's bothering me?"

Gabriel waited.

"Everyone keeps acting like they know something about me."

Gabriel nodded.

"They probably do."

Brook frowned.

"That's not comforting."

"It wasn't meant to be."

Brook looked at him.

"Michael knows."

Gabriel nodded.

"Lucifer knows."

"Yes."

"Death knows."

"Probably more than either of them."

Brook stared.

"And you know something."

Gabriel didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Brook looked away.

"Then why doesn't anyone just tell me?"

Gabriel was silent for a moment.

"Because knowing something and being able to explain it are different."

Brook shook his head.

"That's becoming everyone's favorite excuse."

Gabriel smiled.

"Maybe because it's true."

Brook sat beside him.

For a while, they watched the courtyard.

Then Brook asked:

"Do you miss Heaven?"

Gabriel looked toward the sky.

"Yes."

Brook didn't expect such a quick answer.

"You want to go back?"

Gabriel thought about it.

"Sometimes."

"Will you?"

"Maybe."

Brook nodded.

That answer somehow bothered him.

"You're staying, though."

"For now."

Brook sighed.

"Right."

Gabriel looked at him.

"You want me to stay."

Brook didn't answer immediately.

"I don't know."

Gabriel smiled.

"That's honest."

"I don't trust you."

"I know."

"I don't trust Heaven."

"I know."

"But…"

Brook stopped.

Gabriel waited.

"But I don't hate having you here."

Gabriel smiled.

"I'll take that."

Brook laughed.

"Don't get excited."

"I won't."

The silence returned.

Then Brook's expression changed.

He looked toward the place where Michael's presence rested within his inner world.

Something about the conversation had made him think.

Michael.

Lucifer.

Gabriel.

Brothers.

Three beings connected by something Brook didn't understand.

He looked at Gabriel.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

Brook hesitated.

Then finally asked:

"If they're your brothers, what does that make me?"

Gabriel didn't answer.

The question seemed to stop the morning itself.

Brook watched him carefully.

Gabriel's expression changed.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Something deeper.

He looked at Brook for a long moment.

Then toward the sky.

Then toward Brook again.

"That's…"

He stopped.

Brook waited.

Gabriel didn't finish.

For the first time since arriving—

the archangel seemed genuinely uncertain about what to say.

Brook frowned.

"What?"

Gabriel shook his head slightly.

"Not yet."

Brook sighed.

"Of course."

Gabriel smiled faintly.

"But it's an important question."

Brook looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because I think you're asking the wrong person."

Brook's eyes narrowed.

"Then who should I ask?"

Gabriel looked toward the center of the courtyard.

Toward Brook's own shadow.

"I think that's something you need to discover."

Brook followed his gaze.

Nothing was there.

Just his shadow.

Gabriel stood.

"Come on."

"Where?"

"Breakfast."

Brook stared at him.

"That's your response?"

"For now."

Brook shook his head.

"You're unbelievable."

Gabriel smiled.

"I've heard that too."

They walked across the courtyard together.

Behind them, the morning continued.

Sera watched.

Henry noticed.

Crowley narrowed his eyes.

Tala remained silent.

And deep inside Brook—

Michael remained quiet.

Lucifer remained watchful.

Death remained apart.

The fourth presence remained unnamed.

The question remained unanswered.

But it had been asked.

And sometimes—

asking the right question was more dangerous than receiving the answer.

Brook didn't know it yet.

But that question would follow him.

Not for hours.

Not for days.

Much longer.

Because Gabriel's answer wasn't waiting in Heaven.

It wasn't waiting in Hell.

It wasn't even waiting inside the Sources.

It was waiting somewhere inside Brook himself.

And eventually—

he would have to find it.
