Chapter 213 - The Question

Chapter 213 — The Question

Morning had not yet arrived.

At least, not properly.

Asteria remained beneath the strange light that had followed Gabriel's descent, the city caught between ordinary night and something far older.

Brook sat on the edge of a stone fountain in the courtyard.

He hadn't slept.

He wasn't sure anyone had.

Gabriel was several feet away, leaning against one of the courtyard pillars.

He looked completely comfortable.

That annoyed Brook.

The man had appeared from Heaven, walked into Asteria, looked at him like he already knew something important, and then casually announced that Brook carried his brothers.

And now he was standing there like this was a normal morning.

Brook stared at him.

Gabriel noticed.

"You've been looking at me for five minutes."

"Four."

Gabriel smiled.

"Close enough."

Brook stood.

"Who are you?"

Gabriel's smile faded slightly.

There it was.

The question.

Simple.

Direct.

The question Brook had been carrying since the moment Gabriel appeared.

Gabriel didn't answer.

Brook waited.

"Well?"

Gabriel looked toward the sky.

The strange opening above Asteria remained visible.

Not as violently as before.

But it was still there.

"I suppose you deserve an answer."

"I do."

Gabriel looked back at him.

"My name is Gabriel."

"I know your name."

"Then that's a good start."

Brook frowned.

"That's not what I meant."

"I know."

Brook crossed his arms.

"You're an angel."

Gabriel nodded.

"Yes."

"An archangel?"

"Yes."

"From Heaven?"

"Yes."

Brook stared at him.

"You're not very helpful."

Gabriel chuckled.

"I've been told."

Brook stepped closer.

"You're Michael's brother."

Gabriel nodded.

"And Lucifer's."

Another nod.

"Then what are you doing here?"

Gabriel's expression became more serious.

"That is a better question."

Brook waited.

Gabriel looked at him for several seconds.

"I came because Michael went silent."

Brook's brow furrowed.

"What does that mean?"

"Exactly what it sounds like."

"Michael stopped talking?"

"Michael stopped answering."

Brook glanced toward the courtyard.

"He wasn't answering Heaven?"

Gabriel's eyes sharpened.

"You know more than you realize."

Brook frowned.

"What?"

"Nothing."

Gabriel pushed himself away from the pillar.

"I've said enough."

"No."

Brook stepped into his path.

"You haven't."

Gabriel stopped.

Brook looked directly into his eyes.

"You came down from Heaven because Michael went silent."

"Yes."

"You found Lucifer inside me."

"Yes."

"You saw the fourth mark."

Gabriel's expression changed slightly.

"Yes."

"And now you're staying."

"For now."

"Why?"

Gabriel looked at him.

"Because I don't know what happens next."

Brook blinked.

That wasn't the answer he expected.

"You don't know?"

"No."

"You came here without knowing?"

"I came here knowing something was wrong."

Gabriel glanced toward Brook's arm.

"But I didn't know what."

Brook looked down.

The fourth mark had faded again.

"You said you recognized something."

"I recognized my brothers."

"And me?"

Gabriel was quiet.

"You're different."

Brook's expression hardened.

"Everyone says that."

"Because everyone sees something different."

"What do you see?"

Gabriel didn't answer.

Brook waited.

Finally Gabriel said:

"Someone standing where no one should be able to stand."

Brook frowned.

"That doesn't explain anything."

"No."

Gabriel smiled faintly.

"Not yet."

Brook groaned.

"Why does everyone keep saying 'not yet'?"

"Because some answers become dangerous when they're given too early."

Brook stared at him.

"That's convenient."

"It's true."

"How do I know you're telling the truth?"

Gabriel smiled.

"You don't."

Brook paused.

Gabriel continued.

"And you shouldn't."

That caught Brook off guard.

Gabriel stepped past him.

"Don't trust me because I'm an archangel."

Brook turned.

"Then why should I trust you?"

Gabriel looked over his shoulder.

"You shouldn't trust anyone simply because of what they are."

He looked toward the others.

Crowley stood near the opposite side of the courtyard.

Sera was speaking quietly with Henry.

Tala remained close to the courtyard's edge.

Everyone was watching.

Gabriel turned back toward Brook.

"Trust is something people earn."

Brook studied him.

For some reason—

that answer felt better than anything else Gabriel had said.

It was human.

Too human for an archangel.

Brook sat back down.

Gabriel remained standing.

After a moment, Brook asked:

"Are you stronger than Michael?"

Gabriel laughed.

"No."

Brook raised an eyebrow.

"Really?"

"Really."

"You don't sound very concerned about that."

"Because strength isn't the only thing that matters."

Crowley, from across the courtyard, muttered:

"That's what people say when they don't want to answer the strength question."

Gabriel looked toward him.

"Do you always listen to conversations you're not part of?"

Crowley shrugged.

"When people speak loudly enough."

"I wasn't speaking loudly."

"Exactly. Suspicious."

Sera smiled despite herself.

Brook almost laughed.

The tension eased for a moment.

Then Brook looked back at Gabriel.

"Do you hate Lucifer?"

Gabriel's expression became quiet.

"No."

"Even after everything?"

"Lucifer is still my brother."

Brook glanced toward the place where Lucifer's presence existed within him.

"What about Michael?"

"I love Michael."

Brook looked at him.

"Do you love Lucifer too?"

Gabriel didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Brook was silent.

That answer seemed simple.

Almost painfully simple.

He had spent so long seeing Michael and Lucifer as forces.

Voices.

Opposing powers.

Beings who had tested him.

Fought him.

Pushed him.

Now someone was standing in front of him talking about them like family.

Brook looked down.

"What about Death?"

Gabriel's expression changed.

"Death is different."

"He's not your brother?"

"No."

"Does he hate you?"

Gabriel smiled faintly.

"No."

"Then why doesn't he say anything?"

"Because Death doesn't need to."

Brook looked toward the distant darkness inside himself.

He could feel Death there.

Separate.

Silent.

Watching.

Brook turned back.

"So you're an archangel."

"Yes."

"You're Michael and Lucifer's brother."

"Yes."

"You came from Heaven."

"Yes."

"You came because Michael went silent."

"Yes."

"And you're staying because you don't know what happens next."

Gabriel nodded.

Brook stared at him.

"That's all you're giving me?"

"For now."

Brook sighed.

"You're terrible at introductions."

Gabriel laughed.

"I'm better at other things."

"Like what?"

"Delivering messages."

Brook looked at him.

Gabriel smiled.

"Being a messenger is literally my job."

"That's not reassuring."

"It wasn't meant to be."

Crowley laughed from across the courtyard.

"Finally, someone else gets it."

Gabriel glanced at him.

"You seem to like me."

"I haven't decided yet."

"Fair."

Brook looked between them.

Something about Gabriel was strange.

Not because he was an archangel.

Not because he came from Heaven.

Because he didn't behave like someone who expected worship.

He didn't demand obedience.

Didn't speak like a king.

Didn't treat Brook like a vessel.

He simply watched.

Listened.

Answered when he could.

Refused when he couldn't.

Brook appreciated that.

Even if it frustrated him.

He stood again.

"One more question."

Gabriel waited.

"Why me?"

Silence.

The courtyard seemed to become quieter.

Gabriel looked directly at Brook.

This time, he didn't smile.

"I don't know."

Brook blinked.

"You're serious?"

"Yes."

"You're an archangel."

"I know."

"You came from Heaven."

"Yes."

"You recognized Michael and Lucifer."

"Yes."

"You looked at my fourth mark and immediately knew something was wrong."

"Yes."

"And you still don't know why you're here?"

Gabriel nodded.

"I know why I came."

He took a breath.

"But I don't know why it led me to you."

Brook stared at him.

Gabriel continued.

"That's the part I'm trying to understand."

Brook slowly sat again.

For once—

he had no immediate response.

Gabriel looked toward the sky.

The light above Asteria remained.

Neither of them said anything for several moments.

Then Gabriel spoke quietly.

"I won't pretend I have all the answers."

Brook looked at him.

"I won't pretend I understand what you are."

Gabriel's eyes met his.

"But I will stay until I understand."

Brook considered that.

"You're not going back?"

"Not yet."

"Why?"

Gabriel smiled.

"Because I'm curious."

Brook laughed.

"That's your reason?"

"Partly."

"And the other part?"

Gabriel looked at him.

"I don't think Michael would have gone silent without a reason."

Brook's smile disappeared.

Gabriel continued.

"And whatever that reason is…"

He looked at Brook.

"…I think you're standing very close to it."

Brook didn't respond.

He looked toward the sky.

Then toward his own hand.

Then back at Gabriel.

He still didn't know who Gabriel truly was.

Not beyond the name.

Not beyond the wings.

Not beyond Heaven.

But perhaps that was the point.

Gabriel wasn't going to hand him the answer.

Brook would have to discover it.

And for the first time since Gabriel arrived—

Brook was okay with that.

Not completely.

But enough.

Gabriel turned toward the others.

"I think we should rest."

Crowley snorted.

"Now?"

Gabriel looked at him.

"Yes."

"After Heaven opened above us, Hell started shaking, the Earth started reacting, and Brook's mysterious fourth mark nearly cooked him?"

Gabriel nodded.

"Exactly."

Crowley stared.

"You're insane."

Gabriel smiled.

"Probably."

Brook shook his head.

For the first time that night—

he laughed.

Only briefly.

But he did.

Gabriel noticed.

He didn't comment.

He simply smiled.

And somewhere deep inside Brook—

Michael remained silent.

Lucifer remained watchful.

Death remained apart.

No new memory surfaced.

No hidden answer revealed itself.

The questions remained.

And Gabriel—

for now—

remained with them.
