Chapter 208 - The Maker

Chapter 208 — The Maker

The Maker already knew Gabriel had descended.

He knew before Silvet arrived.

Before the bells of Heaven finished ringing.

Before the people of Asteria understood what they had witnessed.

Before Brook even understood that the man standing beneath the open sky was connected to the beings inside him.

The Maker knew.

But knowing that Gabriel would eventually descend was not the same as knowing why he had descended now.

That distinction mattered.

The Maker stood in a place that had no name.

There was no floor beneath him.

No ceiling above.

No walls.

No throne.

Nothing that could properly be called a room.

Yet he stood there as though the place had been created for him.

Around him stretched an endless darkness filled with points of light.

Some were stars.

Some were worlds.

Some were things that had never been given names.

They drifted slowly through the darkness.

The Maker watched them.

Then one of them changed.

A small pulse.

Barely noticeable.

The Maker's eyes moved toward it.

Earth.

He could see it.

Not as humans saw it.

Not as a blue sphere floating in space.

He saw everything beneath the surface.

The oceans.

The mountains.

The forests.

The cities.

The ancient things buried beneath the soil.

The countless lives moving across its surface.

And—

Asteria.

The Maker brought his attention there.

The image sharpened.

The open sky.

The light pouring through it.

The six wings.

Gabriel.

Brook.

The fourth mark.

The Earth reacting.

The Maker watched without expression.

Then his eyes narrowed.

"Too soon."

The words echoed into the darkness.

A moment later, footsteps approached.

Silvet emerged from the darkness.

He walked casually, as though he had entered an ordinary room.

The Maker didn't look at him.

"You felt it."

Silvet stopped.

"Yes."

"Gabriel."

"Yes."

The Maker's eyes remained on Earth.

"He descended."

Silvet nodded.

"I saw the disturbance."

"You were in the forest."

"Yes."

"You did not interfere."

"No."

"Good."

Silvet smiled slightly.

"You expected him."

"I did."

"But not this early."

The Maker finally looked at him.

"No."

Silvet's smile disappeared.

That answer was more significant than it sounded.

The Maker rarely admitted uncertainty.

Silvet folded his arms.

"You expected Gabriel to come because Michael went silent."

"Yes."

"You expected Heaven to notice."

"Yes."

"You expected Gabriel to descend."

"Yes."

Silvet paused.

"But you didn't expect the fourth mark."

The Maker looked toward Earth again.

"No."

The image of Brook became clearer.

The fourth mark appeared on his arm.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

The Maker studied the pattern.

"It should not be this stable."

Silvet nodded.

"That's what I noticed."

"It should still be incomplete."

"It is incomplete."

"Yet the Earth is already responding."

"Yes."

The Maker was silent.

He watched roots move beneath Asteria.

He watched the ground react whenever Brook's mark pulsed.

He watched the Earth recoil from Gabriel.

Then—

he watched it settle whenever Brook remained still.

The Maker's eyes narrowed.

"The Earth recognizes him."

Silvet nodded.

"Yes."

"Not the Vessel?"

"Tala is only the connection."

"Then Brook is the point of recognition."

"That's what it appears to be."

The Maker stared at Brook.

Something about that bothered him.

Not because Brook was powerful.

Power was measurable.

Power could be studied.

Power could be countered.

Recognition was different.

Recognition suggested a relationship.

A relationship suggested something had existed before either of them understood it.

The Maker didn't like things he couldn't trace to a beginning.

Silvet stepped closer.

"What were you told?"

The Maker looked at him.

"About what?"

"The fourth Source."

The Maker didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"That it would come."

Silvet waited.

"When?"

"Later."

"How much later?"

The Maker looked toward Earth.

"Later."

Silvet smiled faintly.

"That isn't a measurement."

"No."

"So the information was incomplete."

"Yes."

Silvet's expression became serious.

"That is unusual."

The Maker turned toward him.

"Information is never complete."

"Not yours."

The Maker's expression remained unchanged.

"Especially mine."

Silvet studied him.

For a moment, there was something almost amusing in his eyes.

"You admit that rather easily."

"I have no reason to lie to you."

"That's new."

"No."

Silvet smiled.

"You're right."

The image shifted.

Asteria disappeared.

A different view of Earth appeared.

The Maker showed Silvet what was happening beneath the surface.

The roots.

The water.

The stone.

The energy moving through the ground.

Everything seemed to converge toward Asteria.

Silvet watched.

"The Earth is waking."

"No."

Silvet looked at him.

The Maker continued:

"It was already awake."

"Then what is happening?"

"It is remembering."

Silvet's expression changed.

"Remembering what?"

The Maker didn't answer.

The image shifted again.

Brook appeared.

The fourth mark pulsed.

For an instant, something seemed to stand behind him.

A shape.

A shadow.

A presence.

It was impossible to make out.

The Maker stared.

Silvet stared too.

The shape disappeared.

Neither spoke.

Finally, Silvet asked:

"What was that?"

The Maker's answer was immediate.

"I don't know."

Silvet looked at him.

"You're certain?"

"Yes."

"You didn't recognize it?"

"No."

The Maker looked back toward Brook.

"It isn't ready."

Silvet's eyes narrowed.

"Then don't name it."

The Maker glanced toward him.

"I wasn't going to."

Silvet turned toward another part of the image.

"Hutena is there."

The Maker looked toward Asteria.

"Yes."

"You know her?"

"I know of her."

Silvet paused.

"What do you know?"

"She is a woman in Asteria."

Silvet nodded.

"And?"

The Maker's eyes remained on the city.

"She has been involved with Brook."

Silvet smiled.

"That's all?"

"For now."

Silvet looked at him carefully.

"You don't know what she is?"

The Maker turned his head.

"Do you?"

Silvet's smile disappeared.

"No."

That was the truth.

Silvet knew Hutena was in Asteria.

He knew she had strange visions.

He knew she had preached about Brook.

He knew she mattered.

But the connection between Hutena and the Book remained hidden.

Neither Silvet nor the Maker could see the entire shape of it.

The Maker returned his attention to Earth.

"Her visions are changing."

"Yes."

"Because of Brook?"

"Partly."

"And because of Gabriel?"

Silvet considered it.

"Probably."

The Maker nodded.

He didn't say anything more.

The image changed again.

Gabriel.

Standing beneath the open sky.

Six wings spread behind him.

The Maker watched him.

"He was always going to choose this path."

Silvet looked toward him.

"Was he?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

The Maker's expression remained calm.

"Because Michael went silent."

"And if Michael had not?"

"Gabriel would still have come eventually."

"But not now."

"No."

Silvet nodded.

"So the fourth mark accelerated his descent."

The Maker considered the statement.

"Not exactly."

"What then?"

"The fourth mark changed the circumstances that made his descent necessary."

Silvet smiled.

"That sounds like the same thing."

"It isn't."

"Explain."

The Maker looked toward Brook.

"Gabriel felt Michael."

Silvet nodded.

"He followed that connection."

"Yes."

"But when he arrived…"

The Maker's eyes moved toward the Earth.

"…the Earth responded."

Silvet understood.

"And the Earth responded because of Brook."

"Yes."

"So Brook altered Gabriel's arrival."

"Perhaps."

Silvet looked at him.

"You're still uncertain."

"Yes."

That answer silenced Silvet.

The Maker raised one hand.

The image of Asteria expanded.

He could see everything.

Crowley standing near Brook.

Sera beside Hutena.

Henry with Charon wrapped around him.

Tala watching the Earth.

Gabriel facing Brook.

The Maker watched each person.

He wasn't interested in all of them equally.

Crowley was dangerous.

Sera was becoming more capable.

Henry's connection to Charon remained unusual.

Tala mattered because she was the Vessel.

Hutena mattered because she could see possibilities.

Gabriel mattered because Heaven had sent him.

But Brook—

Brook was different.

Everything seemed to bend around him.

Not because he demanded it.

Because things reacted to him.

The Maker watched Brook look at Gabriel.

Then watched Gabriel look at Brook.

He saw something that hadn't been part of the original expectation.

Trust wasn't there.

Neither was friendship.

But there was recognition.

A strange familiarity.

The Maker narrowed his eyes.

"Interesting."

Silvet noticed.

"What?"

"Gabriel doesn't look at him like a vessel."

Silvet watched the image.

"No."

"He looks at him like…"

The Maker stopped.

Silvet waited.

The Maker didn't finish the sentence.

A pulse traveled through Earth.

The image shook.

Silvet's expression changed.

The Maker's hand remained raised.

The fourth mark brightened.

For one brief instant—

the entire planet seemed to respond.

Mountains trembled.

Forests shifted.

Water moved.

Asteria's foundations groaned.

Then everything settled.

The Maker lowered his hand.

Silvet stared.

"That was stronger."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Silvet smiled.

"Three times you've said that."

The Maker looked at him.

"Would you prefer I lie?"

"No."

Silvet looked back at Earth.

"I prefer the truth."

"Then remember it."

"What?"

"The truth."

The Maker's voice became colder.

"Brook is outside the information we were given."

Silvet nodded.

"And the fourth mark is developing outside the expected order."

"Yes."

"And Gabriel's arrival accelerated the reaction."

"Yes."

Silvet looked toward the Maker.

"So what do you want me to do?"

"Nothing."

Silvet raised an eyebrow.

"Nothing?"

"Watch."

"You're sending me away to watch?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because if you interfere now, we learn nothing."

Silvet considered that.

The Maker continued.

"Gabriel must make his own choice."

"Between Heaven and Brook?"

"Perhaps."

"And Brook?"

"Brook must make his own choice as well."

Silvet smiled.

"That sounds dangerous."

"It is."

Silvet turned toward Earth again.

He watched Gabriel.

"He won't return immediately."

"No."

"He'll stay."

"Probably."

"Heaven will notice."

"They already have."

"Hell will notice."

"They already have."

Silvet smiled.

"And the Earth?"

The Maker looked at the planet.

"It noticed first."

Silvet nodded.

There was something almost amusing about that.

Heaven had arrived.

Hell would react.

Humanity would eventually learn.

But the oldest thing in the world had already noticed Brook long before any of them.

Silvet turned toward the Maker.

"Do you think Brook can survive all of this?"

The Maker was silent.

Silvet waited.

Finally:

"I don't know."

Silvet laughed quietly.

"You really are having an unusual day."

The Maker didn't smile.

"Brook was never supposed to awaken this way."

"Yet he did."

"Yes."

"Michael."

"Yes."

"Lucifer."

"Yes."

"Death."

"Yes."

"And now Earth."

The Maker looked toward Brook.

"Yes."

Silvet paused.

"And Gabriel."

The Maker's expression became thoughtful.

"Gabriel is not inside him."

"No."

"But he's connected to what is."

"Yes."

Silvet looked toward Asteria.

"So we're no longer dealing with four powers."

The Maker corrected him.

"No."

Silvet waited.

"We are dealing with the consequences of four powers."

Silvet began walking away.

The Maker spoke before he disappeared.

"Do not approach Asteria."

Silvet stopped.

"You're serious."

"Yes."

"Even if Gabriel becomes hostile?"

"Gabriel won't attack without reason."

"And if he does?"

"Then watch."

Silvet looked over his shoulder.

"You really don't want me involved."

"Not yet."

Silvet smiled.

"Fine."

He disappeared into the darkness.

The Maker remained alone.

He returned his attention to Earth.

The open sky above Asteria still connected Heaven to the world.

Gabriel stood beneath it.

Brook remained before him.

Tala watched the ground.

Hutena watched the future.

Crowley watched Gabriel.

The fourth mark pulsed again.

The Maker stared.

For an instant, he thought he could feel the presence behind it.

Not clearly.

Not enough to identify.

Only enough to know that something was there.

Something old.

Something rooted.

Something that had not yet fully awakened.

The Maker lowered his hand.

"Not yet."

The presence disappeared.

The Earth settled.

But the Maker remained focused on Brook.

There was something else he hadn't expected.

Not the mark.

Not Gabriel.

Not even the changing future.

It was the speed.

Everything was happening too quickly.

The Sources had awakened out of order.

The Earth was responding before it was ready.

Gabriel had descended earlier than expected.

Hutena's visions were breaking apart.

And Brook was becoming the center of forces that should have remained separate.

The Maker had expected Gabriel.

He had expected Michael's silence.

He had expected the Earth Source eventually.

He had expected consequences.

What he had not expected—

was all three arriving together.

The Maker looked toward the open sky.

He could see Gabriel standing beneath it.

He could see Brook.

He could see the Earth beneath them.

And somewhere beyond what even he could perceive—

something else was beginning to move.

The Maker did not name it.

He did not pretend to understand it.

He simply watched.

Because for the first time, the path ahead was no longer something he could confidently predict.

And that—

more than anything else—

interested him.
