Chapter 197 - The Earth Source

Chapter 197 — The Earth Source

Morning settled over Asteria.

The city was still repairing itself after Persephone's attack.

Broken stone was being replaced.

Damaged buildings were being reinforced.

The streets were slowly filling again.

Brook stood outside the palace with his eyes closed.

He wasn't meditating.

At least, he didn't think he was.

He was listening.

Something moved beneath his feet.

Not a sound.

Not a voice.

A vibration.

A presence.

The Earth.

Brook opened his eyes.

Tala was standing several feet away.

She had been watching him.

"You feel it."

Brook looked at her.

"I feel something."

"The Earth."

Brook looked down.

"How do you know?"

"Because I feel it too."

Sera approached from behind.

"You two have been standing here for an hour."

Brook glanced at her.

"Feels longer."

Sera looked at Tala.

"Anything?"

Tala shook her head.

"Not yet."

Sera frowned.

"Not yet?"

Tala looked toward Brook.

"He's still trying to control it."

Brook frowned.

"I haven't done anything."

Tala nodded.

"Exactly."

Brook crossed his arms.

"Then what am I supposed to be doing?"

Tala pointed toward the ground.

"Nothing."

Brook stared.

"That can't be right."

"It is."

She walked closer.

"The Earth Source is different from the others."

Brook looked at the fourth mark on his arm.

"Different how?"

Tala knelt and placed her palm against the ground.

"The other Sources respond because they are Sources."

She looked up at him.

"The Earth responds because it is already here."

Brook remained silent.

Tala continued.

"You cannot summon the Earth."

"You cannot create it."

"You cannot command all of it."

She stood.

"You can only connect to what already exists."

Brook looked around.

The stone beneath them.

The trees beyond the palace.

The mountains surrounding Asteria.

"The Earth doesn't belong to me."

Tala shook her head.

"No."

She looked directly at him.

"It recognizes you."

Brook frowned.

"What's the difference?"

Tala smiled faintly.

"Control means something obeys you."

She placed her hand against the stone wall.

"Recognition means something knows you are there."

Brook stared at the wall.

"So the Earth isn't listening to me."

"No."

"It knows I'm here."

"Yes."

Brook looked down.

"That sounds almost useless."

Tala's expression became serious.

"It is far more dangerous than control."

Crowley joined them.

"You finally figured it out."

Brook looked toward him.

"You've been listening?"

"Unfortunately."

Crowley walked over.

He glanced at Tala.

"She explained it correctly."

Brook raised an eyebrow.

"You agree with her?"

"Don't sound so surprised."

Crowley looked toward Brook's arm.

"The Earth Source isn't like my Hell Source."

He raised his hand.

Hellfire appeared.

"I command this."

The flame moved around his fingers.

Then disappeared.

"Lucifer can do the same."

Brook nodded.

"Michael."

"Same principle."

Crowley continued.

"Death's power is different, but it's still something he directs."

He pointed toward the ground.

"The Earth doesn't need you."

Brook looked at the ground.

Crowley smiled.

"That is what makes it terrifying."

Brook stepped forward.

The moment his foot touched the soil—

a small stone moved.

It rose from the ground.

Brook stopped.

The stone floated beside his leg.

He stared at it.

Sera looked at Tala.

Tala nodded.

Brook slowly lifted his hand.

The stone followed.

Brook moved his hand left.

The stone moved left.

He moved right.

It followed again.

Brook smiled.

"I can control it."

Tala shook her head.

"No."

Brook stopped.

The stone remained floating.

"What do you mean, no?"

"You aren't controlling it."

Brook frowned.

"Then why is it following me?"

"Because it recognizes you."

Brook looked at the stone.

He lowered his hand.

The stone remained in the air.

Brook stepped backward.

The stone followed.

Brook stepped forward.

It followed again.

Sera's eyes widened.

"That isn't normal."

Tala nodded.

"No."

Brook stopped moving.

The stone dropped.

It hit the ground.

Brook stared.

"Okay."

He looked at Tala.

"Then how do I make it happen again?"

Tala smiled.

"You don't."

Brook sighed.

"Of course."

Henry came running from the palace.

"Brook!"

Charon was sitting on his shoulder.

Henry stopped when he saw the floating stone.

"Oh."

Charon leaned forward.

"Earth."

Henry nodded.

"Yeah."

Brook looked at him.

"You missed the interesting part."

Henry pointed toward the stone.

"I think I got here in time."

Charon extended one hand.

The ectoplasm formed a small stone.

Henry stared.

"Are you copying him?"

Charon nodded.

The stone dropped immediately.

Henry looked at him.

"Not exactly."

Charon looked offended.

Brook walked away from the others.

He wanted to try something alone.

He found a patch of soil outside the city.

Then knelt.

He placed his palm against the ground.

Nothing.

Brook waited.

Nothing.

He closed his eyes.

Nothing.

He pushed energy into his hand.

The ground cracked.

Brook immediately stopped.

The crack continued.

Roots emerged.

Brook opened his eyes.

The roots moved toward him.

One wrapped around his wrist.

Brook tensed.

He expected pain.

There was none.

The root simply rested against his skin.

His fourth mark appeared.

Brook stared.

The root slowly tightened.

Not enough to hurt.

It felt almost like a hand touching him.

Brook's breathing slowed.

He could feel something.

Not a voice.

Not words.

Something much larger.

The Earth.

For a brief moment—

Brook felt everything.

The soil beneath Asteria.

The water beneath the ground.

Roots spreading beneath the city.

Trees moving in the wind.

Mountains.

Rivers.

Life.

All of it connected.

Brook's eyes widened.

Then—

he saw something else.

A memory.

Not his own.

A vast landscape.

Much older than Asteria.

A figure stood in the middle of it.

The Earth Vessel.

But the figure wasn't Tala.

Brook knew immediately.

Different face.

Different body.

Different time.

The figure stood beside someone.

Brook.

But not the Brook standing here.

Older.

Different.

The ancient Vessel placed a hand against Brook's shoulder.

Then—

the memory disappeared.

The roots released him.

Brook stumbled backward.

Tala caught him.

"What did you see?"

Brook looked at her.

"You."

Tala's expression changed.

"No."

Brook frowned.

"Not you."

She understood.

"Another Vessel."

Brook nodded.

Tala became quiet.

"You shouldn't have been able to see that."

Brook looked at his arm.

The fourth mark was fading.

"Why?"

Tala didn't answer immediately.

Finally—

she said:

"Because the Earth remembers."

Brook looked at her.

"Remembers what?"

"Everything that has touched it."

"Everything?"

"Not every detail."

Tala looked toward the mountains.

"Impressions."

"Pain."

"Death."

"Power."

"Life."

Brook thought about the vision.

"The Earth remembers me."

"Yes."

"Even before I was here?"

Tala's expression became difficult to read.

"I don't know."

Brook stared.

"That doesn't make sense."

"I know."

Brook laughed.

"Great."

Tala looked at him.

"But there is something I do know."

Brook waited.

"The Earth Source should have developed first."

Crowley stepped closer.

"That much we already suspected."

Tala nodded.

"It's more than that."

She looked at Brook's three existing marks.

"Michael."

"Lucifer."

"Death."

Then the faint fourth mark.

"The Earth."

Brook nodded.

"The order is wrong."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Tala shook her head.

"I don't know what caused it."

Brook frowned.

"But something did."

"Yes."

Crowley looked toward Brook.

"And because the other Sources awakened first…"

Tala finished the thought.

"The Earth Source was forced to adapt around them."

Brook looked down.

"So my body is trying to catch up."

"Yes."

"And that's why the fourth mark keeps appearing."

"Yes."

Brook clenched his fist.

"How long until it fully develops?"

Tala didn't answer.

Brook looked at her.

"How long?"

"I don't know."

Crowley sighed.

"That's going to become annoying."

Brook tried again.

He stood in the middle of the field.

This time, he didn't push energy into the ground.

He simply stood.

Nothing happened.

He waited.

Nothing.

Then—

a small stone beside his foot moved.

Brook looked at it.

He didn't touch it.

The stone rose.

Then another.

Then another.

Three stones floated around him.

Brook didn't move.

Sera watched from a distance.

Henry stood beside her.

Charon stared.

Tala remained completely still.

Brook slowly understood.

He wasn't commanding them.

They were responding to his presence.

He moved forward.

The stones followed.

He stopped.

They stopped.

He turned.

They turned.

Brook smiled.

"This…"

He looked toward Tala.

"This is recognition."

Tala nodded.

"Now you're beginning to understand."

Brook looked toward the mountains.

For the first time—

the Earth Source didn't feel like another weapon.

It felt like something alive.

Something already connected to the world.

Something that had been waiting for him to notice.

Then—

the fourth mark appeared again.

Longer than before.

Brook stared at it.

It no longer looked like a brief flash.

The symbol remained on his arm.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Twenty.

Tala's expression changed.

"It is stabilizing."

Crowley looked at her.

"How quickly?"

"Too quickly."

Brook looked toward her.

"What happens when it stabilizes?"

Tala didn't answer.

Brook waited.

Finally—

she said:

"You'll be able to reach deeper."

Brook smiled.

"Good."

Tala's expression remained serious.

"You don't understand."

"What?"

"The deeper you reach…"

She looked at the ground.

"…the more the Earth can reach back."

Brook's smile disappeared.

That night—

Brook stood alone outside the palace.

The city lights stretched below him.

He looked at his arm.

Three marks.

And the fourth.

The fourth was faint.

But it remained.

Brook touched it.

"I don't know what you are."

The wind moved.

Nothing answered.

Brook looked toward the ground.

A tiny flower grew through the stone beside his foot.

Brook stared.

He smiled slightly.

"You're listening."

The flower moved in the wind.

Brook looked toward the horizon.

The Earth Vessel was already here.

Tala.

She wasn't coming.

She wasn't waiting somewhere else.

She was standing inside the palace, watching the same horizon.

And Brook finally understood something.

The Earth wasn't sending her toward him.

It had already brought her here.

Because whatever connection existed between them—

had begun long before either of them understood it.

Brook looked down at his arm.

The fourth mark slowly faded.

But this time—

it didn't disappear completely.

A faint outline remained.

The Earth Source was catching up.
