Chapter 194 - What The Earth Remembers

Chapter 194 — What the Earth Remembers

The battle ended.

Asteria remained standing.

But only barely.

Smoke rose from several sections of the city.

Guards moved through the streets, helping the wounded and carrying unconscious people away from damaged buildings.

The Abominations were gone.

Most of them had simply collapsed where they stood after Persephone disappeared.

Brook watched one of them lying in the street.

It was breathing.

Barely.

But it was alive.

Sera approached him.

"You noticed it too?"

Brook nodded.

"She didn't make them attack until they died."

Crowley stood several feet away.

"That doesn't make her innocent."

"I didn't say it did."

Crowley looked toward the unconscious Abomination.

"Silvet sent her to attack a city."

Brook's expression hardened.

"I know."

Crowley turned toward him.

"Then why did you let her leave?"

Brook looked at him.

"Because she wanted to leave."

Crowley smiled without humor.

"And?"

Brook stepped closer.

"And because I don't think she was trying to kill us."

Crowley's eyes narrowed.

"That's supposed to make me feel better?"

"No."

Henry approached with Charon hanging from his shoulder.

The ectoplasm was smaller than usual.

Exhausted.

Henry touched it.

"You good?"

Charon slowly formed a face.

"Hungry."

Henry blinked.

"You eat?"

Charon paused.

Then looked toward an unconscious Abomination.

Henry immediately pointed.

"No."

Charon looked disappointed.

"Mean."

Brook almost laughed.

Almost.

Then his arm began burning.

The smile disappeared.

Brook grabbed it.

Sera immediately noticed.

"Brook?"

The fourth mark appeared.

This time—

it didn't immediately disappear.

Crowley stepped forward.

Everyone watched.

The mark glowed faintly.

Then the ground beneath Brook's feet cracked.

Henry stepped backward.

Charon wrapped around his arm.

"Bad."

Brook looked down.

"No."

The crack continued moving.

Through the street.

Past the unconscious Abominations.

Past the guards.

People began shouting.

The crack stopped at the edge of Asteria.

Then—

grass began growing from it.

Everyone became silent.

The grass moved.

Brook slowly turned.

The blades bent.

One direction.

Away from Asteria.

Brook stared.

"Closer."

Sera looked at him.

"What?"

Brook didn't answer.

The fourth mark disappeared.

The grass stopped moving.

Crowley stared at the ground.

"What the hell was that?"

Brook looked toward the distant horizon.

"The Earth."

That night—

Brook couldn't sleep.

He had tried.

For several hours.

But every time he closed his eyes—

he could feel something beneath him.

Not Michael.

Not Lucifer.

Not Death.

The Earth.

Brook opened his eyes.

The room was dark.

He sat up.

The floor beneath him felt different.

Alive.

Brook stared at it.

Then slowly placed his hand against the stone.

Nothing happened.

For several seconds—

nothing.

Then—

Brook disappeared.

He opened his eyes somewhere else.

Brook immediately stood.

The room was gone.

Asteria was gone.

There was only darkness.

Not his inner world.

This felt different.

Brook turned.

Nothing.

Then—

he heard water.

A river.

Brook looked down.

A river appeared before him.

Black water.

It moved slowly through the darkness.

Brook's expression changed.

"Charon?"

No answer.

The river continued.

Brook looked across it.

Someone stood on the other side.

A figure.

Their back facing him.

Brook immediately knew.

The Earth Vessel.

"Hey!"

The figure stopped.

Brook stepped toward the river.

"Who are you?"

The figure slowly turned.

Brook froze.

Their face kept changing.

A man.

A woman.

Young.

Old.

Human.

Then—

something else.

Brook took a step backward.

The figure finally stopped changing.

But their face remained hidden.

"You found me."

The voice came from everywhere.

Brook narrowed his eyes.

"You've been following me."

The figure tilted its head.

"No."

Brook looked at the river.

"Then why are you here?"

The figure looked down.

"The Earth remembers."

Brook's expression tightened.

"What?"

"The Earth remembers what walked upon it."

Brook waited.

The figure raised one hand.

The darkness changed.

Brook saw a battlefield.

Not one he recognized.

Thousands of bodies.

Humans.

Demons.

Creatures.

Angels.

Brook stepped backward.

The vision moved.

Cities burned.

Entire forests disappeared.

Then—

Brook saw twelve massive structures.

The Shinokunis.

But they were different.

Older.

The Earth Vessel spoke.

"Everything leaves something behind."

Brook watched.

"Blood."

The battlefield disappeared.

"Pain."

A city vanished.

"Fear."

The darkness returned.

"Power."

Brook's fourth mark burned.

He grabbed his arm.

The Earth Vessel watched.

"You carry things that do not belong together."

Brook stared at them.

"Michael."

The first mark burned.

"Lucifer."

The second.

"Death."

The third.

Then—

the fourth.

"The Earth."

Brook looked down.

"What are you?"

The Earth Vessel remained silent.

Brook stepped closer.

"I asked you a question."

"You are impatient."

Brook frowned.

"Everyone keeps saying things without answering anything."

The figure almost smiled.

"That is because you are asking the wrong questions."

Brook stopped.

"Then tell me the right one."

The Earth Vessel looked at him.

"Why did the Earth choose you?"

Brook's expression changed.

"I don't know."

"No."

The figure stepped closer.

"You do not."

The river suddenly became violent.

Brook looked down.

The water rose.

He stepped backward.

The Earth Vessel didn't move.

"You are looking for power."

Brook's eyes narrowed.

"Because people keep trying to kill me."

"And when you have enough?"

Brook stopped.

The question followed him.

The darkness around them changed.

Brook saw himself.

Older.

Standing alone.

Blood covered his hands.

Brook's expression hardened.

The vision disappeared before he could understand it.

"What was that?"

The Earth Vessel looked at him.

"Nothing."

Brook stepped forward.

"Don't do that."

The figure didn't react.

"Do what?"

"Show me something and refuse to explain it."

For the first time—

the Earth Vessel laughed.

It wasn't mocking.

It was almost—

human.

"You are like them."

Brook frowned.

"Them?"

But the figure was already walking away.

Brook immediately followed.

"Wait!"

The river disappeared.

Brook stepped into darkness.

"Who are you?"

The voice answered.

"Someone coming closer."

Then—

Brook woke.

He was standing beside his bed.

The room was still dark.

But the floor was covered in grass.

Brook stared.

It was impossible.

Stone had disappeared beneath patches of green.

Roots had broken through the palace floor.

Brook stepped backward.

The grass moved toward him.

Not threatening.

Following.

Brook slowly raised his hand.

The grass stopped.

He lowered it.

It continued.

Brook stared at his palm.

"What the hell?"

"Brook?"

Sera's voice came from outside.

Brook looked toward the door.

The grass disappeared.

Not faded.

Disappeared.

The stone returned.

Brook's door opened.

Sera entered.

She stopped.

"You okay?"

Brook looked at the floor.

Then at her.

"Yeah."

Sera stared at him.

"You don't look okay."

Brook sighed.

"I'm starting to hate that everyone can tell."

Sera crossed her arms.

"Tell me."

Brook looked toward the window.

"I met them."

Sera became serious.

"The Earth Vessel?"

Brook nodded.

"What did they say?"

Brook remained quiet.

Sera waited.

Finally—

"They asked me why the Earth chose me."

Sera frowned.

"And?"

"I don't know."

Sera sat beside him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she said:

"Maybe you don't need to know yet."

Brook looked at her.

"That's the exact type of answer everyone keeps giving me."

Sera smiled slightly.

"Sorry."

Brook sighed.

The next morning—

Queen Hebe called Xcution to the palace.

The damage from Persephone's attack was being discussed.

Brook stood near the back of the room.

Crowley looked bored.

Henry was playing with Charon.

Sera was actually listening.

Hebe stood before them.

"Asteria cannot remain exposed."

Crowley looked around.

"That's usually what walls are for."

Sera elbowed him.

Crowley looked offended.

"What?"

Hebe ignored him.

"Silvet knows you are here."

Brook's expression hardened.

"He knew before he came."

"Yes."

Hebe looked toward him.

"Which means this city is now connected to whatever conflict follows you."

The room became quiet.

Brook didn't like that.

He had never asked Asteria to become involved.

Persephone had attacked because of him.

Silvet had come because of him.

Hutena was here because—

Brook looked toward the window.

No.

That was bigger than him.

It had always been.

Hutena entered the room.

Everyone turned.

She looked tired.

Hebe frowned.

"What happened?"

Hutena looked at Brook.

"I dreamed again."

Crowley sighed.

"Great."

Hutena ignored him.

"This one was different."

Brook stepped forward.

"What did you see?"

Hutena swallowed.

"Six people."

Brook froze.

The room became silent.

Hutena continued.

"They were standing together."

Brook felt something cold move through him.

"Who?"

Hutena looked directly at him.

"I don't know all of them."

Brook's voice became quieter.

"Tell me what you saw."

Hutena closed her eyes.

"One was you."

Brook didn't move.

"One was Sera."

Sera stared.

"One was Henry."

Henry stopped playing with Charon.

"One was Crowley."

Crowley frowned.

"Obviously."

Hutena ignored him.

"The other two…"

Her expression changed.

Brook watched.

"One had wings."

Brook's eyes narrowed.

"And the other?"

Hutena opened her eyes.

"I couldn't see her face."

Brook felt his chest tighten.

The vision disappeared from Hutena's expression.

She looked confused.

"But she had a weapon."

"What weapon?" Brook asked.

Hutena stared at him.

"A sword."

The room became quiet again.

Henry looked toward Brook.

"New person?"

Brook shook his head.

"I don't know."

But deep inside his mind—

Michael suddenly opened his eyes.

Lucifer's smile disappeared.

Death looked upward.

Brook felt them.

For the first time since waking—

all three were focused on something.

Someone.

Brook stood completely still.

Then a voice spoke inside his head.

Michael.

Quiet.

Almost surprised.

"Soon."

Brook's fourth mark appeared.

Only for a second.

Then faded.

Far beyond Asteria—

the Earth Vessel continued walking.

And beneath their feet—

roots moved through the ground.

Reaching.

Searching.

Coming closer.
