Chapter 176 — 6 Months: Sera
The first demon lasted eleven seconds.
Sera counted.
Not because she needed to.
Because Crowley had told her to.
"Count how long it takes."
The creature screamed.
A circle of light burned beneath its feet.
Symbols moved across the ground.
The demon clawed at the invisible wall surrounding it.
"LET ME OUT!"
Sera stood several feet away.
Sweat ran down the side of her face.
Her hand remained raised.
The circle shook.
The demon slammed both hands against the barrier.
A crack appeared.
Sera's eyes narrowed.
"Stay."
The crack sealed.
The demon froze.
Sera exhaled.
Then looked toward Crowley.
"Eleven seconds."
Crowley stood against a broken wall with his arms folded.
"You hesitated."
Sera looked at him.
"I trapped it."
"It nearly escaped."
"It didn't."
Crowley shrugged.
"Still nearly escaped."
Sera glared.
The demon screamed again.
Sera turned toward it.
"Quiet."
The creature's mouth closed.
Crowley's eyebrow rose.
Sera looked back at him.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You were impressed."
"I wasn't."
"You were."
Crowley smiled.
"Maybe a little."
Sera looked back at the demon.
It was smaller than the creatures she had seen before.
Almost human.
Almost.
Its skin was grey.
Its eyes burned yellow.
Small horns pushed through its forehead.
Its fingers ended in black claws.
It wasn't an Abomination.
It wasn't human.
And it definitely wasn't one of the Devils Sera had heard about.
Crowley stepped closer.
"Lower demon."
Sera looked toward him.
"That's it?"
Crowley nodded.
"They're the bottom of Hell."
The demon immediately turned toward him.
"I AM NOT—"
Crowley raised a finger.
The demon stopped.
Crowley continued.
"Most of them aren't powerful enough to enter the human world on their own."
Sera looked at the creature.
"So how did this one get here?"
Crowley looked toward the darkness beyond the ruins.
"Something opened the way."
Sera's expression changed.
Crowley continued.
"Or someone."
The demon struggled again.
Sera looked down.
The Devil Trap shook.
She immediately focused.
The symbols brightened.
The demon screamed.
Crowley watched.
Sera held the trap.
Seconds passed.
Twenty.
Thirty.
A minute.
The creature continued fighting.
Sera's arm began shaking.
Then—
the circle vanished.
The demon fell forward.
It immediately ran.
Crowley moved.
The creature disappeared.
A scream echoed through the trees.
Then silence.
Sera looked at Crowley.
"You killed it?"
Crowley walked back.
"No."
Sera frowned.
Crowley shrugged.
"Maybe."
Six months earlier—
Sera hadn't understood what her magic could become.
She understood the basics.
Healing.
Word Magic.
Protection.
Spells.
But she had been treating them separately.
Crowley had been the one who changed that.
"Magic is not divided."
Sera sat across from him.
"What does that mean?"
"It means humans divide it because humans like naming things."
Sera frowned.
Crowley continued.
"Your magic doesn't know it's called Word Magic."
"That's helpful."
"Shut up."
Sera smiled.
Crowley leaned back.
"You're the one deciding what it can become."
Sera looked down at her hands.
"So I can make anything?"
"No."
Her smile disappeared.
Crowley laughed.
"But you can make your magic evolve."
That was where the Devil Trap began.
The first version was simple.
A circle.
Symbols.
Containment.
Sera trapped lower demons.
Sometimes.
The second version was stronger.
It held them longer.
The third version nearly trapped Crowley.
That one had been an accident.
Sera stood over the glowing circle.
Crowley stood inside.
They both stared at each other.
Sera slowly smiled.
Crowley frowned.
"Sera."
"Yes?"
"Release me."
"No."
"Sera."
"You said I need to test it."
Crowley's eyes narrowed.
"I didn't mean on me."
"You're here."
Crowley raised his hand.
The circle tightened.
Sera immediately raised both hands.
"Wait."
Crowley smiled.
"You said I need to test it."
The trap exploded.
Sera was thrown backward.
Crowley stepped through the smoke.
"You're getting better."
Sera coughed.
"You're annoying."
Crowley helped her stand.
"I know."
But Sera wasn't satisfied.
She sat alone at night.
Redrawing the symbols.
Changing the words.
Changing the structure.
A lower demon.
A Devil.
A Demon General.
An Archangel.
An Abomination.
Five different things.
Five different strengths.
Sera placed them beside one another.
Crowley watched from the doorway.
"You're trying to trap all of them."
Sera nodded.
"One trap."
Crowley walked closer.
"You're insane."
Sera looked at him.
"Can it work?"
Crowley stared at the drawings.
Then smiled.
"Maybe."
That was enough.
Weeks later—
Crowley took Sera somewhere she hadn't been before.
They walked far beyond their temporary shelter.
Past the ruins.
Past the roads.
Into a forest where the trees were dying.
Sera stopped.
"Why are we here?"
Crowley continued walking.
"Because I need to show you something."
Sera followed.
The air became warmer.
Then hotter.
Sera frowned.
"Crowley."
He stopped.
Before them stood an old stone structure.
It looked like a doorway.
Nothing more.
Two broken pillars.
A stone frame.
No door.
Sera looked through it.
Darkness.
Crowley looked at her.
"That's a door."
Sera stared.
"To where?"
Crowley smiled.
"You know."
Sera's expression hardened.
"No."
Crowley laughed.
"Fair enough."
She looked again.
The darkness inside the doorway moved.
Sera stepped backward.
Crowley continued.
"Hell has doors everywhere."
Sera looked toward him.
"And you can just…"
He stepped through the doorway.
Sera froze.
Crowley disappeared.
The darkness remained.
Sera stared.
"Crowley?"
His voice came from the other side.
"Come on."
"No."
Crowley appeared again.
"You didn't even think about it."
"I don't want to go to Hell."
Crowley looked at her.
"Smart."
Sera looked through the doorway.
"Then why are you there?"
Crowley smiled.
"I have work."
Sera stared at the darkness.
Something moved.
She immediately stepped away.
Crowley looked toward it.
"You should close it."
Sera frowned.
"What?"
"The door."
Sera looked at him.
"Why?"
Crowley stepped back.
"Practice."
Sera looked through the doorway.
Something was coming.
She could feel it.
Crowley noticed.
His expression changed.
"Now."
Sera raised her hand.
Symbols appeared.
The stone doorway began glowing.
The darkness inside moved violently.
Sera spoke.
"Close."
Nothing happened.
Crowley raised an eyebrow.
Sera glared at the doorway.
The symbols brightened.
"CLOSE."
The doorway shook.
Something roared from the other side.
Sera stepped forward.
Her magic moved across the stone.
"By my word—"
A hand reached through the darkness.
Sera froze.
The hand was enormous.
Grey.
Covered in scales.
Crowley stepped backward.
"Oh."
Sera looked at him.
"What?"
"That isn't supposed to be there."
The hand grabbed the stone.
The doorway cracked.
Sera raised both hands.
"CLOSE!"
The doorway began collapsing.
The creature pushed.
A horned head emerged.
Sera's eyes widened.
The creature smiled.
Human teeth.
Too many of them.
Its eyes were black.
Its horns curled backward.
It looked down at Sera.
Then Crowley.
"Crowley."
Crowley sighed.
"Hello."
The creature pushed itself through.
The doorway shattered.
It stepped into the human world.
Tall.
Massive.
Armored in black bone.
Sera immediately moved backward.
The creature looked down at her.
"And who is this?"
Sera didn't answer.
Crowley did.
"Sera."
The creature smiled.
"A human."
Crowley looked bored.
"Congratulations."
The creature ignored him.
It looked toward Sera.
"You closed the gate."
Sera's eyes narrowed.
"Almost."
The creature laughed.
Then placed a hand against its chest.
"Then allow me to introduce myself."
Crowley looked at Sera.
"Oh no."
The creature raised its arms.
"I AM GENERAL VRAKTHOS!"
Silence.
Sera blinked.
Crowley stared.
The creature waited.
Sera looked toward Crowley.
"Is he important?"
Crowley started laughing.
Vrakthos' smile disappeared.
"I command—"
Sera raised her hand.
"Stop."
Vrakthos froze.
Crowley stopped laughing.
Sera stared.
Vrakthos' entire body shook.
The word had worked.
Sera's eyes widened.
Crowley slowly stepped backward.
Sera smiled.
Vrakthos' eyes moved.
Pure rage.
The spell broke.
He moved.
Fast.
His hand struck Sera.
Sera blocked.
A barrier exploded.
She was thrown backward.
Crowley didn't move.
Sera slid across the ground.
Vrakthos stepped forward.
"You think words can command a general?"
Sera stood.
Blood ran from her lip.
Crowley watched.
Sera wiped it away.
"Apparently."
Vrakthos charged.
Sera raised her hand.
"Fall."
The ground beneath him broke.
Vrakthos jumped.
Sera spoke again.
"Bind."
Chains of light erupted from the earth.
They wrapped around him.
Vrakthos roared.
The chains broke.
Sera stepped backward.
Crowley watched closely.
"Lower demons," he said.
Sera looked at him.
"Not now."
Crowley continued.
"You can command them."
Vrakthos charged.
"Stronger demons?"
Sera jumped.
"They resist."
Vrakthos swung.
Sera formed a shield.
The shield cracked.
"But…"
Sera landed.
Crowley smiled.
"You can still annoy them."
Sera glared.
Then smiled.
Vrakthos stopped.
"What?"
Sera raised both hands.
The ground beneath him glowed.
Vrakthos looked down.
A circle.
Symbols.
Crowley stopped smiling.
"Oh."
Sera's Devil Trap activated.
Vrakthos immediately jumped.
The circle expanded.
"NO."
Sera stepped forward.
Her arms shook.
The trap closed around him.
Vrakthos slammed his fists against the barrier.
Cracks appeared.
Sera's body shook.
Crowley watched.
"Hold it."
"I KNOW!"
Vrakthos roared.
The barrier cracked.
Sera spoke.
"Stay."
The cracks closed.
Vrakthos screamed.
"YOU CANNOT HOLD ME!"
Sera's nose began bleeding.
Crowley took a step forward.
Sera held up a hand.
"No."
Crowley stopped.
The trap shook.
Sera stared at Vrakthos.
Her voice lowered.
"You said I couldn't."
Vrakthos smiled.
"Not forever."
Sera nodded.
"I know."
She raised her hand.
Vrakthos frowned.
"What?"
Sera spoke.
"Open."
The Devil Trap vanished.
Vrakthos fell forward.
Crowley stared at her.
Sera smiled.
Vrakthos looked up.
Then—
the doorway appeared behind him.
Darkness.
Hell.
Vrakthos turned.
His expression changed.
"No."
Sera raised her hand.
"Go."
The words struck him.
Vrakthos was thrown backward.
He grabbed the ground.
Sera stepped forward.
"GO."
Vrakthos screamed.
The darkness pulled him.
He clawed at the earth.
Crowley watched.
Sera's voice became louder.
"GO!"
The Demon General disappeared into Hell.
Sera immediately closed the doorway.
Stone.
Light.
Silence.
Then—
the door vanished.
Sera fell to her knees.
Crowley walked toward her.
She looked up.
"Well?"
Crowley stared at where the doorway had been.
Then at Sera.
"You redesigned the trap."
Sera smiled weakly.
Crowley nodded.
"Still can't trap me."
Sera's smile disappeared.
Crowley laughed.
Sera reached for him.
Crowley stepped backward.
"No."
Sera smiled again.
"Bind."
Crowley's eyes widened.
Chains appeared.
"Hey—"
Crowley disappeared.
Sera laughed.
That night—
Sera sat outside alone.
Her hands hurt.
Her body was exhausted.
But her magic felt different.
Not stronger.
Not exactly.
More familiar.
She understood something now.
Her Word Magic wasn't simply about commanding.
It was about understanding what she was commanding.
Lower demons could be ordered.
Stronger demons could be resisted.
And eventually—
perhaps—
something stronger could be trapped.
An Archangel.
A Devil.
An Abomination.
Sera looked toward the sky.
Crowley joined her.
"You're thinking too much."
Sera looked at him.
"You took me to Hell."
"I took you to the door."
"Same thing."
"No."
Sera smiled.
Crowley looked toward the darkness.
For a moment—
neither spoke.
Then Sera asked:
"Why did you show me?"
Crowley remained silent.
Sera looked at him.
"Crowley."
He sighed.
"Because the world is changing."
Sera's expression became serious.
"What do you mean?"
Crowley looked toward the distant horizon.
"Too many doors are opening."
Sera followed his eyes.
"The demons?"
"Not just them."
Sera waited.
Crowley stood.
"I need to check something."
"Where?"
Crowley looked toward her.
"Hell."
Sera sighed.
"Of course."
Crowley smiled.
Then walked away.
Sera watched him disappear into the darkness.
She looked down at her hands.
Words.
Traps.
Demons.
Hell.
Everything had become larger than she had imagined.
And somewhere beyond the ruined world—
something else was moving.
Something that had nothing to do with the door Crowley had shown her.
Something watching the Shinokunis.
Learning.
Waiting.
Sera didn't know his name.
Not yet.
But the next six months were already changing the world.
