Chapter 151 - 151

Chapter 151 — Beneath the Silence

Darkness swallowed them.

Brook hit the ground first.

This time, there was no stone.

No street.

No buried city.

His boots sank slightly into something soft.

He stopped moving.

"Don't move."

Henry's voice came from somewhere behind him.

"That usually means I should panic."

Brook ignored him.

His eyes adjusted slowly.

The darkness was not complete.

A faint grey light stretched across the ground.

Brook looked down.

Ash.

They were standing in ash.

Endless ash.

Sera appeared to his left.

Crowley landed beside her.

Shoyo and Rick followed.

The former king emerged last.

The architect did not.

Brook turned.

The black door behind them was gone.

Henry looked around.

"Where's the old man?"

Nobody answered.

Brook felt Death searching.

Nothing.

Not a lifeline.

Not a broken one.

Nothing.

Henry looked at him.

"Brook?"

Brook's face hardened.

"He's gone."

Crowley turned back toward where the door had been.

"There was nowhere for him to go."

Shoyo's expression tightened.

"That's the problem."

They began walking.

There was no other choice.

The ground stretched endlessly.

Ash beneath their feet.

Darkness above them.

No sky.

No ceiling.

Henry looked upward.

"What exactly are we under?"

Rick answered:

"I don't know."

Henry looked at him.

"You're supposed to be the helpful one."

Rick kept walking.

"Then ask someone helpful."

Henry sighed.

Crowley almost smiled.

Almost.

Brook walked ahead.

Death's awareness stretched outward.

Something was wrong.

There were lifelines.

But distant.

Too distant.

Thin points of existence scattered across the darkness.

He could feel them.

But not understand them.

Brook slowed.

Sera noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

She looked at him.

Brook corrected himself.

"Too much."

Henry frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Brook stared into the darkness.

"I can feel things."

Crowley looked at him.

"Alive?"

Brook shook his head.

"Maybe."

Nobody liked that answer.

They walked for what felt like hours.

Or minutes.

Brook couldn't tell.

There was no sun.

No wind.

No change.

Time felt broken.

Henry eventually spoke.

"Has anyone noticed something?"

Crowley answered without looking back.

"Your silence?"

Henry smiled.

"No."

Sera raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

Henry looked around.

"We haven't heard them."

Brook knew who he meant.

He had noticed it too.

Michael.

Lucifer.

Death was still inside him, watching the darkness with a strange silence.

But Michael and Lucifer—

nothing.

No laughter.

No warnings.

No arguments.

Brook's expression tightened.

"Michael and Lucifer have been quiet."

Crowley glanced at him.

"They've been quiet for a while."

Brook nodded.

"Since before we came down here."

Sera looked at him.

"Is that unusual?"

Brook thought about it.

"Lucifer usually isn't quiet."

Henry frowned.

"That's comforting."

Brook looked toward the darkness.

Michael had become almost completely background.

Lucifer had laughed during violence.

Reacted when Brook was angry.

Made his presence known when things became dangerous.

Now—

nothing.

Brook touched his chest.

"Too quiet."

Death remained.

But even Death felt restrained.

Like something below had made the Sources cautious.

Brook lowered his hand.

"Keep moving."

The ash changed.

Brook noticed first.

Footprints.

Hundreds of them.

Sera stopped.

"People?"

Brook crouched.

The footprints went in one direction.

Crowley looked at them.

"Recent?"

Brook placed his hand near one.

The ash was disturbed.

But there was no way to tell.

The former king stepped closer.

His face changed.

"What?"

Brook asked.

The king didn't answer.

He walked forward.

Then stopped.

A shape was buried beneath the ash.

Henry stared.

"Don't."

The king ignored him.

He brushed the ash away.

Stone.

A statue.

Broken.

Brook looked at it.

The statue was of a man.

No crown.

No weapon.

Just one hand raised.

Pointing.

The former king slowly stepped back.

Crowley noticed.

"You know it."

The king whispered:

"No."

Brook frowned.

The king continued.

"But I know that symbol."

Carved into the statue's chest was a mark.

A circle.

Split down the middle.

Henry looked at it.

"What is it?"

Shoyo's expression changed.

Brook turned.

"Shoyo."

She didn't answer immediately.

"That mark existed before the first witch."

Silence.

Crowley looked at her.

"What?"

Shoyo stared at the symbol.

"I have seen it."

Her voice was quieter than normal.

"Only once."

Brook waited.

Shoyo looked toward the endless darkness.

"In a place I hoped I would never see again."

Rick stepped closer.

"Where?"

Shoyo looked at him.

"Here."

Nobody spoke.

A sound came from the distance.

Brook immediately stood.

Henry reached for his weapon.

"What was that?"

Brook listened.

Footsteps.

Slow.

One person.

Crowley stepped beside Sera.

Shoyo raised one hand.

Rick moved forward.

The former king stared into the darkness.

A figure emerged.

Far away.

Walking toward them.

Brook's eyes narrowed.

The figure was small.

Human.

Wrapped in dark cloth.

Henry whispered:

"Please don't be dead."

The figure stopped.

Then slowly lifted its head.

Brook froze.

Not because he recognized the person.

Because Death reacted.

The presence inside him tightened.

The figure smiled.

Brook's grip tightened.

Then the person spoke.

"Welcome."

The voice was calm.

Brook did not move.

"Who are you?"

The figure looked at him.

Not Crowley.

Not Shoyo.

Brook.

"I was waiting for you."

Brook's eyes narrowed.

"Elias?"

The figure laughed.

"No."

The person stepped closer.

The darkness moved away from them.

Brook finally saw the face.

An old woman.

Human.

At least she looked human.

The former king stepped backward.

Shoyo went still.

Brook looked at her.

"You know her?"

Shoyo whispered:

"No."

The woman smiled.

"Yes."

Shoyo stared.

The woman raised her hand.

The symbol from the statue appeared above her palm.

Brook felt Death move.

The woman looked directly at him.

"Long before Shoyo became the First Witch."

Her eyes shifted to Shoyo.

"There were others."

Silence.

Shoyo's face hardened.

The woman smiled.

"Not witches."

Brook waited.

The woman looked around the group.

"Witnesses."

Crowley frowned.

"To what?"

The woman looked into the darkness behind her.

Her smile disappeared.

"The first mistake."

A roar echoed across the ash.

Not Azael.

Not Mórkr.

Something deeper.

Something older.

Henry slowly looked toward Brook.

Brook's expression hardened.

The woman stepped backward.

"You came looking for the beginning."

Brook looked at her.

She pointed into the darkness.

"But first—"

The ground trembled.

"—you need to survive what came before it."

The roar came again.

Closer.

Brook raised his weapon.

The woman smiled.

Then disappeared into the darkness.

Henry stared.

"Did she just leave us?"

Rick answered.

"Yes."

Henry looked offended.

"Rude."

The ash began moving.

Brook looked down.

Something was beneath it.

Hundreds of lifelines.

Approaching.

Crowley raised his hand.

Sera stepped beside him.

Shoyo's expression hardened.

Brook looked toward the darkness.

Then back at his group.

"Stay together."

The ash erupted.

And the first creature climbed out.
