Chapter 120 - The Door Below

Chapter 120 — The Door Below

Morning did not make Remus feel safer.

The tremors had stopped.

That was almost worse.

Brook stood at the edge of the palace balcony, looking across the city.

Workers were already repairing damaged streets. Guards moved through the districts, checking buildings and guiding people away from the worst cracks.

From above, Remus almost looked normal.

Brook knew better.

Something was beneath it.

Something alive.

He could feel it.

Not with his eyes.

Not with Michael.

Not with Lucifer.

Death.

Brook closed his eyes.

The world changed.

Thin lifelines appeared around him.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

People.

Animals.

Everything living inside the city.

Brook's focus moved deeper.

Further.

The lifelines closest to him became clearer.

That was the strange part.

Death did not give him perfect knowledge of everyone.

Distance mattered.

The closer someone was to Brook, the more he could feel their lifeline.

Pain.

Weakness.

Life.

At a certain distance, the sensation faded.

But beneath Remus—

Brook felt something enormous.

Not clearly.

Not yet.

A lifeline.

Too large.

Too deep.

His eyes opened.

"You're doing it again."

Brook turned.

Henry stood behind him, holding two cups.

Brook looked at them.

Henry lifted one.

"I don't know what this is."

Brook took it.

"You brought me something you don't know?"

"I asked."

"And?"

"Nobody answered me."

Brook stared at the cup.

Henry shrugged.

"Try it."

Brook didn't.

Henry took a drink from his own.

He immediately frowned.

"Terrible."

Brook laughed quietly.

Henry smiled.

"There he is."

Brook's smile disappeared.

Henry noticed.

"What's wrong?"

Brook looked over the balcony again.

"Nothing."

Henry leaned beside him.

"You're getting worse at lying."

Brook said nothing.

Henry followed his gaze toward the city.

"You think that thing is still down there."

"I know it is."

Henry looked at him.

"Can you feel it?"

Brook nodded.

"Sort of."

"What does that mean?"

Brook hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

"It's like standing beside someone who is hurt."

Henry's expression changed.

"You can feel that?"

"If they're close enough."

Brook looked toward the ground.

"But this…"

He stopped.

Henry waited.

Brook swallowed.

"This is different."

Before Henry could ask anything else—

a sharp sound echoed from below.

Metal.

Then shouting.

Brook and Henry immediately turned.

The courtyard was filling.

Guards.

Hades.

Crowley.

Sera.

Brook handed Henry the cup.

Henry looked at it.

"Seriously?"

Brook was already moving.

Sera stood near the center of the courtyard.

She looked healthier than she had the previous day.

Not completely.

But better.

Brook approached her.

"You shouldn't be standing."

Sera looked at him.

"Good morning to you too."

Brook stopped.

"You almost died."

"I remember."

"Then act like it."

Sera folded her arms.

"I am acting like it."

Crowley walked past them.

"I have never seen two people argue more about one person standing."

Henry approached.

"You should see them when someone sits wrong."

Brook looked at him.

Henry raised his hands.

"I'm staying out of it."

Hades stood ahead of them.

Several guards were gathered behind him.

Brook noticed the expressions on their faces.

Tense.

Uneasy.

"What happened?"

Hades looked at him.

"The eastern district."

Brook's expression hardened.

"What about it?"

"Another crack opened."

Sera looked toward the city.

"From the tremors?"

Hades didn't answer immediately.

Crowley watched him.

"That's not what he's worried about."

Hades finally spoke.

"The crack is moving."

Silence.

Henry frowned.

"Cracks don't move."

"No."

Hades turned.

"They don't."

The eastern district had been evacuated.

Brook noticed it immediately.

Too quiet.

The streets were empty.

Doors remained open.

People had left quickly.

Hades led the group through the district without speaking.

Brook stayed beside Sera.

Henry walked behind them.

Crowley moved ahead.

When they reached the center of the district, Brook stopped.

The ground was split.

A crack stretched between buildings.

It was wide enough to see darkness beneath.

But Brook wasn't looking at the darkness.

He was looking at the stone.

Words covered it.

Sera froze.

"Those weren't there yesterday."

Hades turned toward her.

"You can read them?"

Sera stepped closer.

Brook immediately caught her arm.

She looked at him.

"I'm not going to touch it."

Brook released her.

Slowly.

Sera crouched beside the crack.

Her eyes moved across the symbols.

Henry leaned toward Brook.

"Can she actually read that?"

Brook whispered.

"I don't know."

Sera suddenly spoke.

"Some of them."

Crowley approached.

"What do they say?"

Sera's face changed.

She looked at the crack.

Then at Hades.

"What is this?"

Hades remained still.

Sera stood.

"What is beneath Remus?"

Hades's voice was cold.

"You already know."

"No."

Sera pointed at the symbols.

"I know there is something alive."

She pointed deeper.

"But these aren't talking about Vaelor."

Crowley's eyes narrowed.

"What are they saying?"

Sera hesitated.

Brook saw fear in her eyes.

That was enough.

"Sera."

She looked at him.

"They're instructions."

No one spoke.

Henry looked at the symbols.

"Instructions for what?"

Sera slowly turned toward the crack.

"For opening something."

The ground moved.

Everyone stepped back.

The crack widened.

Stone collapsed into darkness.

A guard screamed.

The ground beneath him broke.

Brook moved.

He disappeared.

Michael.

The guard fell.

Brook reappeared beneath him.

One arm around the man's waist.

The other caught the side of the broken street.

The impact sent pain through his shoulder.

Brook grunted.

The guard grabbed him desperately.

Brook pushed upward.

Another teleport.

They appeared safely on the street.

Henry grabbed the guard.

Brook stumbled.

Sera immediately caught his arm.

"You okay?"

Brook nodded.

"Yeah."

His eyes moved toward the crack.

The darkness below had changed.

Something was visible.

A structure.

Stone.

Ancient.

Hades walked toward the edge.

Crowley followed.

Brook joined them.

Far below—

there was a door.

Massive.

Built into something that looked like a wall beneath the city.

No.

Brook's eyes narrowed.

Not a wall.

A building.

An entire structure existed beneath Remus.

Older than everything above it.

Henry stared.

"How deep does this city go?"

Hades didn't answer.

Brook looked at him.

"You knew."

Hades's expression remained unreadable.

"I knew there were ruins."

Crowley turned.

"That's not an answer."

Hades looked toward the door.

"No."

He finally admitted.

"It isn't."

Sera's Source reacted.

A faint pulse moved through her body.

She grabbed her chest.

Brook immediately turned.

"Sera?"

"I'm fine."

"You keep saying that."

"Because you keep asking."

Her knees weakened.

Brook caught her.

This time she didn't argue.

Her eyes remained on the door.

"I can hear it."

Hades looked at her.

"Hear what?"

Sera swallowed.

"The words."

Crowley looked toward the darkness.

"Can you read them?"

Sera closed her eyes.

The symbols around the crack began glowing.

One by one.

She spoke quietly.

"Not all of them."

Her breathing became uneven.

"But enough."

Brook tightened his grip on her.

"What does it say?"

Sera opened her eyes.

She looked terrified.

"It says…"

The city moved.

Everyone froze.

The massive door beneath them shifted.

Slowly.

Stone scraped against stone.

A deep sound echoed beneath Remus.

Brook felt the lifeline again.

Closer.

For one terrible moment—

he felt pain.

Not his.

Something else's.

Something beneath the city.

Brook grabbed his chest.

Henry noticed.

"Brook?"

Brook didn't answer.

The pain disappeared.

Then returned.

Stronger.

He could feel it.

The lifeline.

Alive.

Hurting.

Waiting.

Brook looked toward the door.

Sera finally finished.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"The door was never meant to keep something inside."

Silence.

Crowley slowly looked at her.

"What?"

Sera stared into the darkness.

The door moved again.

A thin line of darkness appeared between its stone halves.

Sera's face lost all color.

She whispered:

"It was meant to keep something out."

The door opened another inch.

Deep beneath Remus—

something knocked.

Once.

Brook felt its lifeline.

And this time—

it felt him back.
