Chapter 13 - Lee Roy

Back in Brooklyn, things were starting to feel a bit odd for Kalby. When he got those coins from the lad… He has felt so much more energy. Hell, Job had nothing on him now! His smile seemed to grow as he made his way down the all too familiar alley. He rolled his shoulders, an odd thought hitting him.

'Why are my's clothes tight? Have I been eatin' too much again?'

Kalby's mind was bugged with all these questions as he went into the little tent town that he called home. As he walked through, the eyes of his friends and others only seemed to hold the cold feeling of unfamiliarity towards him. That's odd, he came on the ship with all them, why are they lookin' at him like that?

As he went to reach for his tent flap, a hand grabbed his wrist and spun him around. The boy, just reaching his teens, was giving him what could only be described as a stare of Death.

"The Hell's you doin here big guy? That tent ain't yours."

A confused Kalby looked at him, wrenching his hand away with barely little force. This caught the teen off guard. He was white-knuckling the man's wrist and he just moved it away like he was a fly buzzing around him. A few other people saw this and went to back up the teen.

"Have you been rummagin' through the garbages again Matty? This is my tent. My wife is in there right now, probably worryin 'erself sick that I haven't gotten back yet."

"You ain't Kably, you's look nothing like the drunk paddy bastard we all's know!"

Another kid shouted at him, the others agreeing with the comment. Kalby raised his hands and sighed.

"Oh come off it, Maggie. I was there when ya took yer first steps. Shouldn't ya be hawking newspapers Thomas?"

He began, confusing a couple people as he started listing off who they were.

'What about you, McGloughlin? Remember that time a rat bit ya in yer w-"

"HEY! YOU SAID YOUS WOULD KEEP THAT A SEC...ret...Kably.."

The boy named McGloughlin said, slowly making his way forward. He was in a daze; Kalby was the only one who knew about that. He even remembered Kably taking him to a Doctor and footing the bill with the money he saved up a few months for getting his wife a present.

"Kalby...What in the Seven Hells happened to ya?"

He said, confusing the supposed drunkard even more. With that look of confusion on his face, another kid snapped out of their awe and raced off. They came back just moments later with a cracked mirror and held it up to him. Kalby noticed this and carefully took it, his eyes widening in shock as he finally understood what they meant.

Christian was walking through Brooklyn once again. With the golden galaxies searching, he sighed in annoyance. Kalby was impossible to find. It was obvious that he spent all the coins, so he was unable to be tracked. He continued to walk down the random streets of the Borough, hoping to strike some sort of luck.

"How hard is it to find a seemingly young Irish guy in this place… I mean especially you ya drunk bum…"

He whispered to himself as he began walk down the alleyways. Many seemed to hold tents of people, some wishing for this country's dream to come true for them and their families. Some seemed sick, others were haggard and eyed the Walker of the Damned as if he was an easy coin purse.

There were a couple that tried to do so…

They were reminded to never try such a thing again.

By the time the sun was dipping below the brick building skyline, Christian made his way down the last alleyway he had yet to scour. He only took a few steps in, and the sounds of merriment and joy quickly reached his immortal ears. He slowed his pace, being cautious as the sight of lights quickly came into view.

It was another tent town, yet this one was full of happy beings. The smells of fresh stew and watered down grog quickly mixed with the rancid scents of unwashed people. Yet despite all the disheveled beings, a giant stood out from the rest.

His clothes were constricted, and yet he didn't seem to mind. His pearly white smile and the spark in his eyes only seemed to bolster everyone's mood. Christian was in total shock, it could only be one man, the former being he knew now just a shadow of what he is now.

"Kalby!"

He called out, the music seeming to quickly become disjointed. The happy crowd seemed to look confused at a well dressed being before one quickly became hostile.

"Whats a schmuck like yous-"

"MCGLOUGHLIN!"

Kalby roared out, causing the teen to flinch in surprise. The newly made man quickly stepped forwards, leaving the woman at his side by the fire. In  a few strides, he stood before the being of Death. His face went from angered to the trademark loon smile.

"Have some respect for this finely dressed lad. 'Specially since he's the one who blessed me."

Murmurs of shock and awe came from the entire shanty place. This was the one who helped change the fate of a failing man to become the behemoth of joy? Christian looked around and saw people quickly avoiding his gaze. The crackling fire was not enough to hide the subtle words they prayed.

To them, a God was before their very eyes.

Christian returned his gaze to the softly smiling male, shaking his head before sighing.

"To be fair, even though I did not know the outcome, someone on the brink of collapse helping me find what I needed, it was something at least I could do."

He said, causing the giant to laugh broadly.

"Well, t'was something I thought was never gonna happen, yet you saved me m'lord."

"Please, do not call me that. Christian is more than enough… that goes to all of you as well. I may have performed a miracle, yet think of me as another man."

He called out the last part, yet it was obvious in their eyes that his words had no effect. Kalby looked around and cleared his throat.

"You heard him! LET'S PARTY!!!!"

He belted, the music starting back up. Soon enough, the people slipped back into the thrill of fresh food and seemingly never ending drinks. When he saw a spark of happiness in this stone city of sorrow, he couldn't help but crack a smile. The giant next to him patted his back, gesturing him to follow

"Ya know, you granted me some hope… along with my wife too. We have one on the way. Signs showing that it could be a boy. She wants to name him Lee… I want to name him Roy... "

He began, looking back to the unbeknownst Reaper.

"We can't even decide… You have a suggestion?"

Christian looked up and rubbed his chin. He never had to name anything before. This was something that he never prepared for. However, the simplest idea came to mind.

"Name him both… Lee Roy Jenkins…"
