I felt Janetta before the runner reached me — the tether flaring bright and close, closer than it had been in weeks, close enough that some animal part of me was on my feet and moving toward the gate before the Gob had even finished his breathless report about shadows.
The town square was already gathering by the time I got there, word spreading the way it always did, faster than any horn.
