The next morning, Sara walked through the school gates with a new awareness. The stares she once dreaded now felt… different.
Some students whispered, but their tones were no longer mocking. A few even smiled at her, nodding in quiet respect. She overheard a boy mutter, "Did you see how she handled Emily yesterday? Finally, someone stood up to her."
Sara's cheeks warmed, but she kept her head high. For years, she had blended into the shadows. Now, the spotlight — however faint — had found her.
Lina grinned as she caught up beside her. "Congratulations. You're officially trending in our little school kingdom."
Sara groaned. "I didn't ask for attention."
"You didn't have to," Lina smirked. "Courage is louder than gossip."
In the library, Sara noticed a girl she barely knew approach shyly.
"Um… Sara?" the girl murmured. "I just wanted to say… thank you. For standing up to Emily. She's made life miserable for a lot of us."
Sara blinked in surprise. "I… didn't do it for anyone else."
"Doesn't matter," the girl smiled nervously. "It mattered."
As the girl left, Sara sat frozen. For the first time, her fight against Emily wasn't just personal. It rippled outward.
Across the courtyard, Emily seethed as she watched the exchange. Hannah leaned close, whispering fiercely.
"She's gaining sympathy. If you let her continue, she'll turn people against you."
Emily's nails dug into her palm. "Then we'll remind her of her place. She wants to play brave? Fine. Let's see how she handles being broken."
Her eyes gleamed with dangerous intent.
That afternoon, Adrian found Sara studying under a tree. He plopped down beside her uninvited, flashing his usual grin.
"You know, princess, you're becoming quite the rebel. First standing up to Emily, now earning fans. Impressive."
Sara raised an eyebrow. "Why do you keep calling me that?"
"Because you look like one," Adrian said, winking. "A princess stuck in a tower. Except now, you've decided to throw rocks at the dragons."
Despite herself, Sara laughed softly. "You're ridiculous."
Ryan strolled over next, tossing a basketball between his hands. "Don't get too comfortable. Emily won't back off. People like her never do."
Adrian rolled his eyes. "You're such a pessimist."
"I'm realistic," Ryan retorted.
Leo arrived last, calm as always, holding a book. "Both of you are missing the point. Sara doesn't need rescuing. She needs strategy." His sharp gaze flicked toward her. "If you know your enemy, you won't fear their attack."
Sara studied the three of them, startled by how differently they saw her. Adrian teased, Ryan warned, and Leo advised. But together, they formed a strange circle — and Daniel stood at the center.
When she glanced up, Daniel was there too, standing quietly a few feet away. Their eyes met briefly, and though he said nothing, she felt the weight of his silent support.
Later that evening, back at the Chen mansion, Sara overheard her stepmother on the phone.
"Yes, everything is moving smoothly. The girl is becoming more… noticeable. That will work in our favor. Don't worry, Mr. Li, we'll ensure she's ready when the time comes."
Sara froze in the hallway, her stomach twisting. Mr. Li?
Her stepmother's tone was silky with satisfaction. "Sara may resist, but she'll have no choice. In the end, she'll do exactly what we need."
Sara clenched her fists, a chill running through her veins.
Her school battles with Emily suddenly felt small compared to this. There were games being played far bigger than she imagined — and she was caught right in the middle.
