Chapter 268 - Vol.06 Ch.39 – UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN

On the shores of the island where the Whitebeard Pirates had held their funeral, the morning sun cast a quiet light across the beach.

Luffy sat alone on a weathered rock, his straw hat resting beside him.

He stared out toward the endless sea.

For once, there was no grin on his face.

No excitement.

No reckless confidence.

Only silence.

His fists rested against his knees, tightly clenched.

Too many powerful people had gathered in the Paramount War.

The Admirals.

Blackbeard.

Shanks.

And Arthur.

But Luffy had found himself caught between forces far beyond his current strength.

He had tried to save Ace.

He had fought until his body could barely move.

He had pushed himself beyond his limits.

But in the end, he still needed others to save him.

The fight from Impel Down to Marineford kept replaying in his mind.

Falling while trying to save Ace at Impel Down because he couldn't defeat Warden Magellan.

Sabo and Baby-5 helping him infiltrate Impel Down.

Bon Clay and Ivankov helping him break out.

Running to Marineford and doing everything he could to free Ace.

Rayleigh and Whitebeard's commanders helping him stand before Ace.

Whitebeard standing against an entire army so they could escape Marineford.

His fingers slowly tightened around the edge of his hat.

"I couldn't protect Ace by myself. Sabo had to save me... and even after that, Arthur had to step in."

The words came out quietly.

Luffy lowered his head.

"And I couldn't protect my crew with my current strength."

That realization hurt more than any wound he had suffered at Marineford.

For the first time, Luffy wasn't thinking about becoming Pirate King.

He wasn't thinking about the One Piece.

He wasn't even thinking about defeating the next enemy.

He was thinking about the people who had chosen to sail with him.

Zoro.

Nami.

Usopp.

Sanji.

Chopper.

Vivi.

Karoo.

Franky.

Brook.

They had trusted him enough to follow him into the Grand Line.

And if he entered the New World now...

What could he actually do if another war happened?

What could he do if an Admiral came after them?

What if an Emperor decided they were in the way?

What if one of his friends was captured again?

Luffy's expression hardened.

He didn't want to experience that helplessness ever again.

The sea ahead was vast.

The New World waited beyond the Red Line.

But for the first time, Luffy understood that entering it wasn't simply a matter of being brave.

It meant having the strength to protect the people who stood behind him.

And he wasn't there yet.

Luffy stared down at his clenched fists.

"I was too weak."

Sabo looked at him but said nothing.

Luffy's voice became quieter.

"If I want to protect everyone... I can't stay like this."

His eyes sharpened.

"I have to train."

A voice immediately came from behind him.

"Finally."

Luffy froze.

He slowly turned around.

Zoro stood there with his arms crossed, a faint grin on his face.

Luffy blinked.

"Finally?"

Zoro nodded.

"You finally said something sensible."

"HEY!"

Luffy puffed out his cheeks.

"What do you mean, finally?!"

Zoro shrugged.

"You've been shouting about becoming Pirate King for years. It's about time you realized that being strong enough to punch things isn't the whole job."

"...I punch things pretty well." Luffy stared at him.

"That isn't the point."

Behind Zoro, the rest of the crew stood together.

"Actually, Luffy isn't the only one who needs to get stronger." Nami crossed her arms.

"Nami-chan isn't wrong." Sanji adjusted his collar, his expression unusually serious.

"I... unfortunately have to agree." Usopp said, swallowing hard.

Chopper raised both hooves. "Me too!"

"Marineford made that rather clear." Vivi smiled faintly.

Franky clenched a fist. "SUUUPER clear!"

Brook raised one bony hand.

"I was nearly killed and turned into a skeleton."

Everyone looked at him.

Brook paused.

"Actually, I already am."

"That's not what we mean." Nami sighed.

"Oh." Brook lowered his hand. "Then I agree."

Luffy looked at all of them.

For the first time since Marineford, his expression softened.

They had all felt it.

The difference in strength between themselves and the monsters who had fought on that battlefield.

They had fought.

They had survived.

But survival wasn't enough.

Zoro stepped forward.

"When I saw Mihawk... I understood something."

His hand rested lightly against the hilt of his sword.

"If I want to become the world's greatest swordsman, I can't keep relying on what I have now."

"That's surprisingly intelligent for someone who gets lost walking in a straight line." Sanji gave him a sideways glance.

"What did you say?" Zoro's eyebrow twitched.

"I said you're finally starting to use your head."

"You want to test how well my head works?"

"Anytime, moss-head."

Nami immediately stepped between them.

"Not here."

Luffy suddenly laughed.

"Shishishi!"

The tension among them broke.

But Zoro's expression soon became serious again.

"We all felt it at Marineford." He looked at the others. "We weren't strong enough."

No one argued.

Not even Usopp.

Usopp slowly raised a finger.

"I would like to point out that I was actually extremely brave."

"You hid behind a wall." Nami looked at him.

"I was tactically positioned behind a wall!"

"You screamed."

"That was battle communication!"

Chopper nodded enthusiastically. "That sounds convincing!"

"Don't encourage him." Nami stared at both of them.

Luffy laughed again.

Then he looked around at his crew.

His crew.

The people who had followed him across the sea.

The people who had stood beside him through every impossible battle.

His expression became determined.

"Then we'll all get stronger."

"That's the idea." Zoro smirked.

Luffy clenched his fists.

"We'll train until we're strong enough to face anyone." His eyes burned with determination.

"And next time..." He looked toward the distant sea.

"I won't let anyone take my friends away from me."

One by one, the others nodded.

They had all reached the same conclusion.

Marineford had shown them the cruelest truth of the Grand Line.

Dreams alone were not enough.

If they wanted to reach the end of their journey together, they needed the strength to protect one another when the next monster appeared.

Zoro stepped beside Luffy.

"Then let's get stronger."

"Sounds like we have some serious training ahead of us." Sanji lit a cigarette.

"Good. Because I'm not going through another situation like Marineford unprepared." Nami smiled.

Usopp puffed out his chest.

"And when I become stronger, I'll be able to defeat ten thousand enemies!"

"Start with ten." Zoro glanced at him.

"Why are you always ruining my numbers?!"

Franky threw a fist into the air.

"Then let's make our comeback SUPER!"

"I'll become a doctor who can keep everyone alive!" Chopper jumped excitedly.

Vivi smiled.

"And I'll make sure none of us forget why we're fighting."

Brook raised his cane.

"And I shall become strong enough to protect my friends!"

Everyone looked at him.

Brook paused.

"Though I still don't know how much stronger a skeleton can become."

Franky grinned.

"We can always add some metal."

Brook's eyes widened.

"YOHOHOHO! Please don't turn me into a robot!"

Laughter filled the table.

Luffy smiled.

For the first time since Marineford, the weight on his shoulders felt a little lighter.

They had lost.

They had been helpless.

They had seen just how far the gap between them and the strongest people in the world truly was.

But they were still together.

And now they had something to do about it.

Luffy turned toward the others.

"Let's train!"

Everyone answered at once.

"Yeah!"

"Finally." Zoro smirked.

Luffy's face immediately twisted.

"STOP SAYING FINALLY!"

A familiar voice answered from behind them.

"That's the first sensible thing you've said since arriving here."

Luffy turned.

Ivankov stood a short distance away, arms folded across his chest.

Luffy blinked.

"Iva-Chan?"

Ivankov's expression became unusually serious.

"You've seen the difference between wanting to save someone and actually having the strength to do it."

He stepped closer.

"You nearly died several times during this war. If the people around you hadn't protected you, you wouldn't have reached Ace."

"I know." Luffy lowered his eyes.

Before Ivankov could answer, Rayleigh's voice came from nearby.

"There is a place."

Everyone turned.

Rayleigh approached slowly, his coat resting over his shoulders.

Luffy's eyes widened.

"Rayleigh!"

The older man gave him a faint smile.

"I've been thinking about it for some time."

He stopped beside Luffy and looked toward the distant horizon.

"There's an island in the Calm Belt. Rusukaina."

Luffy listened carefully.

"It's inhabited by countless dangerous creatures. The environment itself will try to kill you."

Ivankov's eyes widened slightly.

Rayleigh continued.

"But that is precisely why it will be useful."

Luffy's expression gradually changed.

"So I can train there?"

"Yes."

Rayleigh looked directly at him.

"If you're serious about becoming stronger, I'll train you myself."

Luffy's eyes widened.

"You will?"

Rayleigh nodded.

Luffy grinned.

For the first time since Marineford, something resembling excitement returned to his eyes.

"I'll do it."

"Do what?" Rayleigh raised an eyebrow.

"Get stronger." Luffy clenched both fists. "Strong enough that nobody has to die protecting me again."

The determination in his voice silenced those around him.

Sabo watched his brother carefully.

Then he smiled.

"That sounds like you."

Luffy looked at him.

"What about you?"

Sabo's expression softened.

"I have my own path. I'm helping Captain Arthur reach our dream."

Before Luffy could ask further, Ivankov cleared his throat.

"And my boss wants to meet Vivi."

Vivi, who had been standing nearby with Karoo, looked toward him in surprise.

"Me?"

Ivankov nodded.

"Luffy's father, Dragon, wants to meet you."

Vivi's expression changed immediately.

"Dragon..."

"The leader of the Revolutionary Army has something to discuss with you. The Revolutionary Army has its own reasons for preparing for what comes next," Ivankov said. "And if you're willing, you can train with us."

Vivi looked toward Karoo.

The little bird gave an uncertain cry.

She then looked across the sea.

The world had changed.

The war had proved that simply standing on the sidelines was no longer enough.

If she wanted to protect her people and understand the forces shaping the world, she needed to become stronger as well.

Vivi slowly nodded.

"If Luffy has decided to train, then I should do the same."

Ivankov grinned.

"Excellent!"

Karoo raised his wings and shouted.

Vivi laughed softly despite herself.

"Baltigo, then." Ivankov grinned, clearly pleased with Vivi's answer.

Nami glanced toward her.

"You'll be with the Revolutionary Army?"

"For a while." Vivi smiled. "I think there's still much I need to learn."

By then, Arthur had finished his conversation with Marco and returned to the group.

His gaze moved from Luffy to Vivi, then toward the remaining members of the Straw Hat crew.

Zoro stood quietly with one hand resting near his swords.

Nami was examining the weather around the island.

Usopp was unusually silent.

Sanji leaned against a damaged section of the harbor, staring toward the horizon.

Chopper was speaking with one of the medics.

Franky was already inspecting the remains of a damaged weapon.

Brook stood apart from the others, his empty eye sockets somehow carrying a thoughtful expression.

They had all survived.

But surviving Marineford had made one thing painfully clear.

They were not ready for the world waiting beyond the Red Line.

Arthur finally spoke.

"I can send the rest of you somewhere suitable for training."

Nami blinked.

"You can?"

"Yes."

Usopp's eyes narrowed suspiciously.

"Somewhere suitable?"

Arthur gave him a faint smile.

"Somewhere that will force you to become better at what you already do."

"What kind of places?" Zoro's expression sharpened.

"That depends on what you need."

Arthur paused.

"One place will give you nothing but an opponent and enough time to keep swinging your swords until you understand what you're missing."

"Sounds good." Zoro's eyes narrowed.

Arthur's gaze shifted toward Sanji.

"Another place will push your legs beyond what an ordinary human body should be able to endure."

Sanji's eyebrow twitched.

"That's a rather unpleasant description."

"You'll survive."

"What wonderful words." Sanji sighed.

Arthur continued.

"For someone who needs to understand weather, there is a place where the sky itself is a teacher."

Nami's eyes lit up.

"For someone who needs greater medical knowledge, there's an island where medicine has reached a level you won't find anywhere else."

Chopper's ears immediately perked up.

"And for someone obsessed with machines..."

Arthur looked toward Franky.

"Technology?" Franky's eyes widened.

"Enough to keep you busy."

"SUPER!"

Arthur then looked toward Brook.

"There is another place where survival will depend on creativity more than strength."

Brook tilted his skull. "How mysterious."

Arthur's gaze shifted toward Usopp.

"And there is one where nature itself will force your body and instincts to evolve."

"That sounds considerably less pleasant." Usopp swallowed.

"It is."

"Why did I ask?" Usopp's face fell.

A few of the Straw Hats laughed.

The tension that had followed them since Marineford eased slightly.

Arthur looked at all of them.

"I won't decide for you." He folded his arms. "You choose whether you want to go."

Luffy stepped forward. "We're going."

The others looked at him.

"All of us." Luffy grinned.

"Obviously." Zoro smirked.

Nami sighed.

"I suppose I don't have much reason to refuse."

Usopp raised a finger.

"I would like everyone to remember that I am agreeing to this under extremely dangerous circumstances."

"Stop complaining and choose a destination." Sanji exhaled.

Chopper nodded enthusiastically. "I want to learn more!"

"I've already decided!" Franky slammed a fist into his palm.

"Then it seems we have no reason to hesitate." Brook chuckled.

Arthur's expression softened slightly.

"Good." He turned toward Monet. "Can you do it?"

Monet nodded. "I've already placed my [Mark] on the islands you want."

Her Devil Fruit ability had already proven useful enough to reshape how the ART Pirates moved people across the world.

Monet's Swap-Swap Fruit would make the otherwise impossible journey almost effortless.

Arthur looked toward the Straw Hats one final time.

Then he looked at Monet.

"Ready?"

"Whenever they are." Monet smiled.

The Straw Hats gathered around Monet.

Everyone had agreed to train at the islands Arthur had suggested.

But one problem remained.

"How long are we going to train?" Nami asked.

Everyone looked toward Rayleigh.

The old swordsman folded his arms.

"That depends on how quickly Luffy learns," he replied. "But if you want my recommendation, two years would be ideal."

"Two years?!" Luffy's eyes widened.

Rayleigh nodded.

"You've barely begun to understand Haki. If you want to survive the New World, you need time to master it."

"Do we really need two years?" Luffy scratched his cheek.

"Yes," Rayleigh answered immediately.

Luffy groaned. "That's a long time..."

"It is," Rayleigh agreed. "But surviving the New World will take longer if you rush."

The discussion slowly turned toward their own training.

But there was still one important question.

"What about the Sunny?" Franky asked.

The mood became slightly more serious.

They couldn't leave their ship sitting somewhere exposed for two years.

"It can't stay here," Nami said. "Someone could steal it."

"And we can't take it with us," Usopp added. "We're all going to different places."

Rayleigh nodded.

"That is the problem."

Arthur, who had been listening quietly from nearby, finally stepped forward.

"You don't have to worry about the Sunny."

Everyone turned toward him.

Arthur glanced at the ship.

"I can hide it."

"Hide the Sunny?" Nami blinked.

Arthur nodded.

"There are places under my protection where the Marines and ordinary pirates won't be able to find it easily. I can have my people move it somewhere secure and keep watch over it while you're training."

Franky immediately stepped forward.

"You can guarantee that?"

"I wouldn't offer if I couldn't guarantee it."

Franky stared at Arthur for a moment before grinning.

"SUPER!"

"That solves our problem." Nami's expression relaxed.

They began discussing the plan again.

The Straw Hats would separate.

Vivi and Karoo would remain with the Revolutionary Army and train alongside them. They had their own path to follow, and the Revolutionary Army would provide them with the environment they needed.

Luffy would stay with Rayleigh.

He would travel aboard Shanks' ship with Rayleigh until they reached the Calm Belt. From there, Rayleigh would take him to Rusukaina, the island chosen for his training.

The rest of the Straw Hats would train separately on the islands Arthur had chosen for them.

And Monet would handle the transportation.

Once everything had been decided, the tension that had surrounded the plan finally began to disappear.

Nami looked around at her crew.

"So that's it?"

Rayleigh nodded.

"For the next two years, everyone follows their own path."

Luffy grinned.

"And then we meet again at Sabaody two years later!"

"Make sure you actually get stronger." Zoro smirked.

"I will!"

"Just don't expect us to wait for you." Sanji adjusted his collar.

"I'm not waiting for anyone!"

Usopp raised a fist. "Then it's settled!"

"Two years of training!" Franky laughed.

Chopper jumped excitedly. "I'll become much stronger!"

"And I shall return as a completely different skeleton!" Brook raised his cane.

Nami smiled.

For the first time, the separation no longer felt like something frightening.

It felt like preparation.

They weren't abandoning each other.

They were preparing to meet again.

Arthur turned toward Monet.

"Are you ready?"

"I am." Monet nodded.

She stepped forward and extended both hands.

A faint glow began to gather around her.

One by one, the Straw Hats moved into position.

Nami looked toward Luffy.

"See you in two years."

"See you!" Luffy grinned.

"Don't get weaker." Zoro gave Luffy a final glance.

"I'm not gonna!"

Sanji lit a cigarette. "Take care, Nami-swan, Vivi-chan."

Nami rolled her eyes.

"Take care of yourself, Sanji."

Usopp gave Luffy a dramatic salute.

"Become strong enough to keep up with us!"

"You too!" Luffy laughed.

Chopper waved both hands. "Luffy! Don't forget us!"

"I won't!"

"See you in two years!" Franky raised his fist.

Brook lifted his cane. "Until then, yohohoho!"

Luffy smiled at all of them.

"Yeah!"

Monet closed her eyes.

The glow surrounding her intensified.

"Swap."

In an instant, the seven Straw Hats vanished.

Nami.

Zoro.

Sanji.

Usopp.

Chopper.

Franky.

Brook.

Each of them had a destination waiting on an island where they would spend the next two years training.

Their destinations were already prepared.

Their journey had begun.

Vivi and Karoo soon departed with Ivankov, joining the Revolutionary Army for their own training.

Meanwhile, Luffy remained beside Rayleigh.

Shanks stood near the waiting ship, watching the young pirate with a faint smile.

"Ready, kid?"

Luffy turned toward him.

"Yeah!"

Rayleigh stepped aboard.

Luffy followed.

The Red Hair Pirates prepared to set sail.

Their destination was the Calm Belt.

Beyond that dangerous sea lay Rusukaina, an island where Luffy would spend the next two years learning how to control his Haki, strengthen his body, and prepare himself for the New World.

The Sunny Go would remain hidden and protected.

Vivi and Karoo would train alongside the Revolutionary Army.

The rest of the Straw Hats would follow their own paths.

And Luffy would begin the hardest training of his life.

Three paths.

One destination.

The reunion of the Straw Hat Pirates.

But before that day came, every one of them would have to become stronger.

The age that Whitebeard had left behind would not be inherited quietly.

It would be forged by those who survived it.

And the Straw Hat Pirates had just taken their first steps toward becoming strong enough to face the world that awaited them.
