Chapter 252 - Merchant chapter 237

I paid the man for the wand and a holster that Salem strapped to the underside of her left wrist.

"Next we have to get a trunk to store all of the books, potion equipment and ingredients in. There's a pretty good shop over there that I got my own trunk from before I obtained my suitcase." I said pointing at the trunk shop.

"Suitcase?" she asked curiously.

"Indeed, a suitcase that looks no different than any other but actually has an expanded space inside it that is large enough to play sports in or if in a pinch, live in." I say with a nod.

"Expanded space? Wizards in this world can control space?" she asked fascinated.

"It's a very advanced type of magic but yes. There are roughly two kinds that have been popularized but in theory any sort of configuration is possible. The popularized pieces are the "here and there" and "expansion" type spatial spells. The first include both portkey's that are a sort of special long distance teleportation magic and apparition that is much more accessible. But long range is considered ill advised on account of the high chance of splinching, the act of leaving a piece of you behind when you teleport." I paused to let that sink in.

"Then there's the Floo network which is a very unique bit of spatial magic where you travel through actual fireplaces to entirely different one in almost no time at all regardless of distance. The downside is you always end up at least a small amount ash coated on you." I explained.

"Fascinating. And you will be teaching me this?" she asked eagerly.

"Er, no? I don't know it myself. I never bothered to learn it since I could just zap myself around fast enough that it didn't matter." I admitted awkwardly.

"So you just ignored an entire type of magic because you didn't believe you needed it?" she asked with a small upturn of her lips as she clearly found that funny.

"Look I have ignored a LOT of things so far for a lot of reasons. I believe I can be forgiven for ignoring a magic I don't feel like I need." I said a little defensively.

"So what will you be teaching me then?" she asked with an amused expression.

"The standard first year curriculum of course, the bare minimum you'll need to effectively blend in. That's transfiguration, charms, potions, defense against the dark arts, herbology, flying, history of both the magical and muggle variety and astrology." I said honestly.

"Herbology? You are going to teach me gardening?" she asked incredulously.

"Magical gardening specifically. Don't go thinking you can just grow magical plants the same as normal ones. Many of the magical plants in this world can be lethal or incredibly unfun to deal with if you are unaware. Additionally the knowledge bleeds quite heavily into potioneering as many magical plants are also needed for potions and being able to identify if they are ready for harvest or not means the difference between a powerful successful potion and potential disfigurement. For most witches and wizards at least." I say seriously.

"Leaving Remnants understanding of plants behind then." she said mentally adjusting to give the topic the proper respect.

I nod and lead the way into the trunk shop where I purchase a trunk with a considerable internal space and a lightweight enchantment. With that in hand I headed over to Flourish and Blots to pick out the textbooks for the previous years full list for the first, second and third year students.-

"I will personally speedrun you through the first year subjects depending on how quickly you pick them up but after that you can rely on self study to advance further. The remaining month I have before I must return to school should be enough though since you are both intelligent and have absorbed a skill stone." I explained as I had the trunk floating along behind us as we left the shop and headed for the potions shop.

"Why are you still at school with your power?" she asked with a frown.

"Because that's the law. Children eleven to up to eighteen are required to attend a school to learn magic from certified instructors. This lasts for seven years total but upon reaching at least sixteen and passing your O.W.Ls you can apply for a test to emancipate yourself and opt out of the remaining two or three years. Though you'll find getting work hard if you do so it's not normally done. I am only twelve however and in my upcoming second year so I still unfortunately have an additional five years ahead of me including this one. My power and skill are irrelevant to this fact." I said with a shrug.

"A pity. I had hoped you would be able to tutor me for a longer period." she said sounding disappointed.

"Afraid not. You could always hire a tutor though for higher learning if you believe self study and practice insufficient." I suggested.

"I may look into that. This worlds magic is incredibly deep compared to Remnants. I am eager to plum it's depths and find all of it's hidden secrets." she said rubbing her new wands handle as she did.
