Chapter 2 - Finding Father

Boom!

The Beowolf was launched out of the way by something. The force dragged its body crashing through a market stall, destroying the items on display.

Not that there much left to destroy anyway. The fire was raging hard.

"Jaune! Come with me!" A voice called out, snapping Jaune out of his terror.

His head turned to see an older man. His lion-like blonde hair had graying edges around its frames. His eyes were tinted heavily with worry and slight panic, though Jaune could see a hint of relief. Most likely from seeing Jaune safe from harm.

This was his father, Lionel Arc.

"Dad! W-what... What's happening?!"

Before his father could answer however, the alarm for Grimm attack rang out once again. But this time it was accompanied by a voice speaking over the announcements.

[Citizens of Ambiance, an evacuation order is in process. Please make your way towards the docks located at the Southern sector. The city has fallen and Grimm are sieging the city. This is not a drill. I repeat that this is not a drill!]

The announcement rang out multiple times before being cut off.

Jaune felt a sense of panic blowing up in his mind. The people around him had also started running away as fast as possible.

The ones who weren't dead, at least.

"Jaune! Snap out of it!" the voice of his father shouted. The sound successfully managed to jolt Jaune out of his reverie but it did little to calm the panic in his heart.

Instantly, his father rushed over to him. Jaune hadn't noticed before but his father held in his hand a sort of... weapon. It resembled an RPG but it had glowing tubes attached to it and was fairly large in size.

"Jaune, follow me. We have to get back home quickly." His father pulled him along, his steps were quick and precise, deftly moving through the ruined market place.

Several Grimm however decided that they would stop his plans.

Without hesitation Lionel Arc raised the weird weapon and aimed it at the Beowolves snarling in front of him.

Jaune watched in abject horror as his dad pulled the trigger. Instantly, a devastating force washed over the group of Grimm.

It hit with the proverbial power of a truck, blasting them away into walls or into market stands that were on fire. The Beowolf that was closest to father, however, taking the brunt of the impact, was instantly obliterated into pieces, turning into smoke almost instantly.

Jaune could only stare, his eyes showing a hint of astonishment.

"D-dad... what the hell is t-that weapon?"

"Its a prototype. An air canon that fuels itself from Air element dust. I call it, Typhoon!" His father flashed Jaune a hint of a mad scientist smile.

Jaune would have loved to reciprocate his fathers excitement from the weapon but the environment around them changed his mind, though Jaune couldn't help but wonder where his father had acquired such a weapon.

Immediately his father grabbed Jaune and dragged him towards the direction of their house.

Jaune was confused. Why weren't they making their way towards the docks where the evacuation was taking place? Why were they instead headed in the opposite direction?

"Dad, w-where are we going? We should head to the docks! We need to evacuate!" Jaune shouted, trying to release his grip from his father's hand.

Lionel Arc sighed before looking around the area. He saw several people running away from grimm but thankfully none were focused on him and his son at the moment.

He pulled Jaune into an alley and looked at him deep in his eyes.

"My research. I need your help to bring it along." Lionel spoke, waiting to see his reaction.

Jaune felt surprised by his dads words. The surprise was instead replaced with a hint of anger. He couldn't believe what had just came from his fathers mouth.

"Im, sorry?" Jaune asked, wanting to confirm.

"My research, Jaune! Its important and I can't carry everything on my own." His father sighed, rubbing his temple.

"What the hell do you mean your research!? People are out there dying and... and you have the gall to think about the products you developed?" Jaune asked incredulously, breaking away from his grip

"No! Its not like that! Jaune, listen to me. If I don't get my research here today, mankind as a whole will have one less chance of winning against the battle against the Grimm." Lionel Arc grabbed his shoulders in an almost desperate measure.

"W-what?" Jaune asked. "Mankind's future? What are you talking about... you... you're a food chemist what does that have to do with..." Jaune suddenly stopped. "Dad... that weapon... did you design it?"

"Yes, Jaune... look we don't have much time! The truth is, im not really a food chemist. Im... a scientist. One who isn't backed by any corporation or kingdom."

"...This is..." Jaune stuttered off, struggling to wrap his head around the idea. "Why did you lie? What..."

"Jaune! Listen to me." His father took a peek towards the main road from where they were discussing his life. The streets were crawling with Grimm now. This wasn't good. They've wasted enough time already. "We don't have much time. I NEED your help. If you don't help me, humanity is doomed. Please, we don't have much time. You always to told me you wanted to become a Hero and now it your chance... but... you are going to have to trust me. I will explain everything to you. I promise!"

Seeing his father's desperate eyes, Jaune couldn't bring himself to say no. In any case, his words seemed to light a spark within Jaune's mind.

To become a hero.

He had always read about stories of Hunters who defended towns, settlements and even tales about how they killed legendary Grimm.

They were the protectors of the weak. The beacons in the darkness, acting as a shield which repelled all the evil from the world.

Jaune had always aspired to become somewhat of a hero himself and this was apparently his chance. Although his fathers words made little sense, he had a feeling that from this day forth, his world would never be the same.

"...Alright. I'll help you." Jaune sighed his eyes narrowed in determination.

"Thank you." Lionel Arc looked relieved from his words and quickly holstered his Air Cannon once again.

He hesitated for a moment before fishing from his back pocket a handgun type weapon. It looked like a miniature version of the Typhoon. He handed the weapon over to Jaune.

"Take it. It's not much but it should kill a few of them. You have about 30 shots left in that thing before it breaks. We need to leave now or we'll get swarmed."

Jaune nodded without question, trusting his father to answer once they were at a safe location.

The father/son duo rushed from their hiding spot in the narrow alley and charged through towards the hordes of weaker Grimm.

Jaune felt fear rising up inside of him seeing the masses of darkness. But the words of his father rang through his mind.

Summoning whatever willpower he had left, he aimed his weapon.
