Chapter 77 - Memories (2)

Of course, his new body had to have been formed using divine magic rather than copulation, since the Twin Lords were both males, though certainly not with just their magic alone. Without the assistance of Phanes, the neutral deity of life itself, neither Rahu of Darkness nor Baldr of Light would be able to so thoroughly alter a lifeform anywhere close to the expert's standards. Of course, the guidance of Aion of Time and Caelus of Space was needed to properly alter time without causing paradoxes and to accurately position where the altered time-traveller so as to avoid disastrous consequences such as causing a black hole from incorrectly placed matter. Thankfully, by 4:75, these five deities still existed, though far weaker due to the constant stress of dealing with the Demon Emperor's invasive powers. Whatever powers they had left were all used to alter Luca and reshape the past.

Essentially, the conversation Luca had with the present Lord of Light after time-travelling explained that the free power that Baldr and Rahu had used was their present forms' spare power compared to their future counterparts using all of their remaining power and lifespan. Norani quickly comprehended all of this within the brief time of Luca's memory of the conversation. She said nothing, however, and let the memory play through until Luca's 10,000m drop from the sky.

The next memory Luca brought forth was of him about half a year into the future of his previous life from the present day, roughly around March 20th, 4:50 Divine. This was when he had first started playing the game, so he was busy learning about recent events. As he read through one newspaper out of a large stack in the capital's public library, he also heard through the ambient dialogue of NPCs and players about what had happened. Compared to other lesser events, the only major piece of information was of the tragedy in Clearpine City. As Luca had said, the city suffered a great slaughter that began to cause the blood of the Light Faction, particularly the humans, to boil with anger. The paper listed major figures of the battle that had fallen or disappeared, such as the governor, most of the city's officials, the guildmaster of the Mages Guild, the commander of the city guards and the commander of the army camp two kilometres westward. The list of missing persons, which was much shorter than the list of deceased, started with the name Samantha Valar, the First Princess of the Valarion Kingdom. An attached note to the bottom of the list stated that, according to a handful of lucky survivors from her guard entourage, she was defeated after several battles with the enemy commander, a genius Dark Elf Warrior, and captured by a mage suspected to be above Lv. 7 based on how easily he used spells up to Lv. 4 chantlessly.

Up until this point, Arthur had subconsciously held onto a shred of doubt about his eldest daughter's abduction according to Luca. Upon viewing the newspaper of his own capital city had written up a list of dead and missing individuals, and seeing his daughter among the list, had removed that doubt. This greatly saddened him, but not as much as it enraged him, knowing that his kin had indeed been used against him. For a moment, the human king radiated an aura of bloodthirsty before he remembered where he was and calmed down to continue watching the memory 'slideshow'.

The next half-hour consisted of Luca's memories of the following inter-faction war and the subsequent losses of life, including critically important members of the factions, such as Arthur himself and most of his kin, members of the royal families of every nation, and other major powerhouses. His earlier statement on the fate of Kharnboldohr's government, especially it's ruler, was also brought to the forefront. The borderline had altered so much and so often that there was no longer a way to determine the line anymore. The easternmost provinces of the Valarian Kingdom, such as Grens Province, had all become desolate warzones demarcating contested territory. In fact, any cities that had been in those areas, not counting the villages and towns, were razed until only ruins remained due to the brutal clashes.

After that Luca brought forth his memories of the five years between the end of the inter-faction war and the start of the first wave of demons. The number of incidents suspected to be related to demons rose sharply during this time period, as mass sacrifices, cannabilism, unknown diseases and random people going into fits of hysteria with greater strength than ever exhibited before happened almost on a weekly basis. One of the biggest highlights was of a strange disease that spread through contact with contaminated blood, though its source wasn't specified due to lack of evidence, that slowly but drastically twisted the infected individual's form into a variety of twisted, gruesome fleshly beings with no commonalities between each other or their previous appearances. After a full transformation, any sentient intelligence other than instinct became nonexistent as the infected began to slaughter, devour, and infect anything nearby. The only exceptions to this were other infected individuals. There was no cure for it, only a death while one was still human or a death as a monster.

This disease was something Norani was very familiar with and it was one of the numerous things of the Heroic Era that left the greatest impact on mortals. In the future, it wasn't until after the first wave of demons that the two Pseudo-Sages came forth to protect their homelands from the invaders that it was truly identified. Both recognized the disease in an instant and quickly had the living sovereigns pass on the information. The disease was a result of ingesting the blood of a demon, most often orally or through contact via an open wound. The taint, as it was called, turned any who became infected into completely subservient minions of demonkind, and it was these minions, the Tainted, who took up the bulk of the numbers of the invading demonic army.
