According to traditional aerodynamic principles (for airplanes), bumblebees should not be able to fly due to their bodyweight and wingspan ratio being too high.
Instead, fluid dynamics need to be used. Their wings flap at a high frequency in the range of hundreds of times per second and their wings can rotate. With precise rotation, they also generate a bit of updraft during the upstroke (still less than the downstroke).
