Chapter 127 - Chapter 127: His Name Shakes the Demon Immortal Continent

The end came without warning.

Inside Myriad Halls Plaza, the countless trial doors dimmed at the same time. The blank plaques above them did not light up. No names appeared. No levels returned. No pass, fail, or death result broke the silence.

Only the air changed.

The ancient pressure that had been hanging over the plaza since the hidden-result rule descended again, but this time it did not press the cultivators toward the doors. It pressed them away.

Feng Jiu'er lifted her head first.

The cloth around Fang Lin's neck was still dark with blood. A moment earlier, he had been seated behind the loose screen of Green Bamboo and Thousand Leaf disciples, eyes half-lowered, aura rough, body still carrying the teeth of whatever hidden chamber had nearly cut open his throat.

Now the space around him bent.

Not only around him.

Around everyone.

Gu Man stood at once. "What now?"

Mo Qingchuan's fan stopped in his hand. "That does not feel like another rule change."

Ye Qinglan's expression sharpened. "It feels like ejection."

The word had barely left her mouth when the old formation voice spread through Myriad Halls Plaza.

"The marked trial period has ended."

Every cultivator froze.

"The outer ruin law has completed its count. Those whose current path has closed shall return."

No explanation followed.

No comfort came with it.

The black flame marks on the bodies of the surviving cultivators flared at the same time. Some gasped. Some grabbed weapons. Some reached for companions. A few looked toward the doors as if unwilling to leave while mystery still stood in front of them.

Feng Jiu'er turned toward Fang Lin.

"Shen Mo."

Fang Lin's eyes opened.

For one breath, their gazes met.

He seemed about to speak.

Then the space between them folded.

Feng Jiu'er reached out, but her fingers closed on empty air.

White light swallowed Myriad Halls Plaza.

The world broke apart.

Outside the Rivercloud Demon Sealing Ruins, the sky above the major sect camps had been tense for a long time.

The unmarked cultivators had already been ejected earlier. Their reports had shaken the camps once: black flame marks, missing elites, a deeper pull, and a place no one outside knew. Since then, elders, guardians, sect envoys, and hidden observers had waited beneath banners, formations, and flying treasures with patience that grew thinner by the hour.

Then the ruin gate trembled.

It was not like the earlier ejection. That had scattered ordinary survivors in waves.

This time, black flame light rose from the ancient entrance like smoke from a sealed furnace.

The elders of Thousand Leaf Immortal Sect stood first.

Heavenly Sword Lake's sword cultivators turned as one.

Scarlet Sun Palace's camp flared with heat. Demon Suppression Temple's monks opened their eyes. Black Tortoise Mountain's guardians lowered their heavy gazes. Medium sect elders, rogue protectors, merchants, spies, and information brokers all looked toward the same place.

The air cracked.

One figure fell out.

Then another.

Then dozens.

The marked cultivators returned in scattered bursts of light, appearing across the prepared formations outside the ruins. Some landed on their feet. Some stumbled. Some fell unconscious before their sect elders caught them. A few screamed from wounds that had been held together only by trial pressure and stubbornness.

Chaos erupted, but it was a controlled chaos.

Major sect elders moved first. Pill Dawn Sect disciples rushed forward with medicine. Scarlet Sun Palace cultivators surrounded their wounded. Heavenly Sword Lake formed a sword-guard ring around its returning disciples. Demon Suppression Temple monks chanted under their breath while checking for hidden corruption. Medium sect elders cried out names and dragged their young disciples back from the crush of bodies.

"Young Master!"

"Bring pills!"

"His arm, seal his arm first!"

"Where is your senior brother?"

"Do not crowd the formation!"

"Count the marked disciples!"

A Thousand Leaf Immortal Sect elder caught Ye Qinglan as she appeared. She landed steadily, but her face was pale enough that his expression changed.

"Qinglan."

"I am fine," Ye Qinglan said at once.

The elder did not believe her, but he heard the control in her voice and turned his gaze past her. "How many returned with you?"

Ye Qinglan looked across the camp.

Feng Jiu'er appeared a short distance away with Su Wanqing. Feng Jiu'er's feet touched the ground lightly, but the fire Qi around her sleeve flared the instant she realized where she was. Her gaze swept the returning cultivators.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

Su Wanqing also looked.

Her expression changed.

Gu Man landed with a heavy thud near the Ancient Beast Hall camp, cracked armor scraping against stone. An elder with beast-bone earrings laughed once in relief, but Gu Man did not laugh back. His eyes were already searching.

Mo Qingchuan appeared near the reclusive cultivator section, one hand pressed against his cracked lantern pendant. His master, an old man with pale brows, narrowed his eyes at the blood on Mo Qingchuan's sleeve.

Mo Qingchuan looked past him.

The same silence appeared in several places at once.

At first, only a few noticed.

Feng Jiu'er noticed.

Su Wanqing noticed.

Ye Qinglan noticed.

Gu Man noticed.

Mo Qingchuan noticed.

They did not speak immediately.

That made it worse.

A Green Bamboo Sect elder approached Feng Jiu'er quickly. "Jiu'er, where is Shen Mo?"

The name slipped into the air.

Nearby disciples turned.

Feng Jiu'er did not answer at once.

Her eyes moved across the returning cultivators again, colder each time. She saw River Sword Sect disciples. Heavenly Sword Lake disciples. Demon Suppression Temple monks. Scarlet Sun Palace geniuses. Medium sect elites. Reclusive disciples. Some wounded, some pale, some silent, some half-carried by elders.

And disciples of

No black sword.

No blood-dark robe.

No calm, infuriating answer.

No Shen Mo.

Su Wanqing's face lost a little color. "He was beside us before the ejection."

The Green Bamboo elder stiffened. "Beside you?"

Feng Jiu'er finally spoke. "Yes."

Her voice was too calm.

That calm drew more attention than panic would have.

Across the camp, Xu Hanjiang heard the name. He was the only one who had gained the black flame mark and entered the Main trial.

His head turned.

Several River Sword Sect disciples looked at one another. One of them had been inside Myriad Halls Plaza long enough to see Shen Mo return wounded again and again under the blank plaques. He opened his mouth, then closed it when Xu Hanjiang's gaze cut toward him.

But silence could not hold for long.

A medium sect disciple nearby whispered, "Silent Mountain Sword did not come out?"

Someone else heard.

"Who?"

"Shen Mo. The rogue cultivator from inside the ruins."

"The one from the Black Lamp Hall rumors?"

"The one who carried the black sword."

"The one who made Xu Hanjiang pay compensation?"

"Was he not just a strong Spirit Foundation rogue cultivator?"

"Just strong?" A wounded disciple let out a bitter laugh. "You did not see him inside Myriad Halls Plaza."

The words spread like a spark touching dry grass.

At first, they were only questions.

"Where is Shen Mo?"

"Did he die?"

"No corpse returned."

"Not everyone returns if they die inside."

"But why did the others return now?"

"Was he still in a door?"

"Can someone remain after ejection?"

"Who knows the rules of that place?"

Then the questions changed.

"He entered after the plaques went blank."

"He came back with wounds that looked worse each time."

"Gu Man stood guard for him."

"Ye Qinglan helped shield him."

"Feng Jiu'er treated his wounds herself."

"Jian Wuchen watched him."

"Kong Mingyuan stopped moving his prayer beads when he returned."

"No one knew what level he reached."

"No one knew whether he passed or failed."

"And now he is the only one missing?"

That last sentence moved through the crowd like a blade.

Not shouted.

Not confirmed.

But carried.

Every disciple from the sect started discussing about Shen Mo with their sect elders.

An elder from a medium sect frowned and spoke in a low voice to the people beside him. "There are only three possibilities."

His disciple looked up. "Elder?"

"He died inside. He reached a place that did not eject him with the rest. Or something inside chose him."

The disciple's face changed.

The elder did not look pleased by his own words.

Other elders were thinking the same thing.

A Scarlet Sun Palace elder stood beside his wounded disciple and listened to the rumors without turning his head. His disciple's chest still leaked unstable flame from a trial injury, and yet even he tried to raise himself when Shen Mo's name spread.

The elder pressed him down. "Recover."

The disciple said hoarsely, "Elder, that rogue cultivator came back from a door with his neck nearly cut open. No plaque appeared, but the people around him changed after that."

The elder's eyes narrowed. "Changed how?"

"Like they had seen a man return from somewhere they did not dare name."

The Scarlet Sun elder said nothing more.

At Heavenly Sword Lake's side, Jian Wuchen stood quietly while an elder examined his state. His injuries were not light, but his sword intent remained stable.

The elder asked, "You heard the rumors?"

Jian Wuchen's gaze remained on the ruin gate. "I heard them before we left."

"Was he worth watching?"

Jian Wuchen did not answer immediately.

That pause made the elder's expression sharpen.

Finally, Jian Wuchen said, "He was not ordinary."

For Jian Wuchen, that was almost praise.

Nearby, Xu Hanjiang's face hardened.

A River Sword Sect elder looked at him. "You had conflict with this Shen Mo."

Xu Hanjiang cupped his hands. "A small matter inside the ruins."

"Small matters do not make names spread through a camp after ejection."

Xu Hanjiang lowered his head slightly. "He hid deeply."

The elder studied him. "Did you underestimate him?"

Xu Hanjiang's jaw tightened.

He wanted to say no.

He wanted to say Shen Mo had only relied on a strange sword, a few pressure methods, and good timing. He wanted to say the rogue cultivator had walked under other people's protection and survived because open fighting had been restricted.

But Myriad Halls Plaza had changed the meaning of every excuse.

The plaques had gone blank.

The doors had swallowed truth.

And Shen Mo had not come out.

Xu Hanjiang forced his voice steady. "Everyone underestimated him."

The River Sword Sect elder's eyes turned colder.

At Demon Suppression Temple's camp, Kong Mingyuan stood surrounded by monks and elders. His robes were still neat, his face still righteous, but the prayer beads at his wrist had not moved since he appeared outside.

An older monk looked at him. "Mingyuan."

Kong Mingyuan lowered his eyes. "Master."

"This Shen Mo. Is he connected to the Verdant Marrow Cleansing Bead dispute?"

"He interfered with our side inside the ruins," Kong Mingyuan said calmly. "He also hid his origin and strength."

"Many rogue cultivators hide things."

"Not like this."

The old monk's gaze deepened.

Kong Mingyuan turned one prayer bead at last. "He stood among Green Bamboo, gained Thousand Leaf attention, traded with a reclusive disciple, drew Ancient Beast Hall curiosity, and returned from hidden doors with injuries no one could measure. Now he is absent."

The old monk understood the part left unsaid.

A rogue cultivator who offended Demon Suppression Temple was common.

A rogue cultivator who became a question among major sects was not.

Farther away, the Black Mountain Gate elders had also heard the name.

One of them frowned. "Silent Mountain Sword?"

A disciple nodded quickly. "That is what they call him."

"Weapon?"

"Black sword. No sheath. Some say he used mountain-like pressure inside the ruins."

The elder's gaze changed slightly. "Mountain-like pressure?"

"Only rumors, Elder."

"Rumors often begin as something seen badly."

The elder looked toward the ruin gate.

No Shen Mo.

His expression became thoughtful.

Around the camps, old judgments began to crack.

Before Myriad Halls Plaza, many elders had heard of Shen Mo and placed him in a convenient box.

A dangerous rogue cultivator.

A young man with a strange sword.

A dark horse from the ruins.

A little stronger than expected.

They desperately wanted to know his origins.

Someone useful to recruit if obedient, troublesome to suppress if arrogant, and easy to forget if a true legacy disciple stood beside him.

Now that box no longer held.

If he had died, then he had died somewhere beyond the public result of the trial, and even that death had weight. But they had seen him recovering before they were ejected.

If he had survived but not returned, then the rules of the ruins had bent around him.

If he had been chosen by something inside, then every sect here had watched a treasure walk past them wearing the name of a rogue cultivator and failed to grasp it.

None of the possibilities were comfortable.

The name spread again.

Silent Mountain Sword.

Shen Mo.

Some said he had cleared a hidden level no one else reached.

Some said the mansion had swallowed him.

Some said he had offended the trial spirit.

Some said he was not a rogue cultivator at all, but the hidden disciple of an old monster.

Some said he had obtained a reward so great the ruins refused to eject him.

No one had proof.

That was exactly why the rumor grew.

Proof could be weighed, challenged, denied, or buried.

A missing man left space for fear to cultivate itself.

Feng Jiu'er stood beneath the Green Bamboo Sect banner and listened to the name move farther and farther away from her.

Shen Mo.

Silent Mountain Sword.

Hidden inheritor.

Dead man.

Chosen man.

Threat.

Treasure.

Her fingers tightened once inside her sleeve.

Su Wanqing stood beside her, face pale but composed. "He is not dead."

Feng Jiu'er did not look at her. "You cannot know that."

"No." Su Wanqing's voice softened. "But you do not believe it either, else we should have seen his corpse being flug out."

Feng Jiu'er was silent.

Across the camp, Gu Man had already pushed away the Ancient Beast Hall disciple trying to treat his shoulder.

His elder barked, "Stand still."

Gu Man pointed toward the ruin gate. "Silent Mountain Sword did not come out."

The elder's heavy brows lowered. "I have ears."

"Then use them well. If he died, the place should have thrown out something. If he did not die, then he is still inside."

The elder looked at him. "You like him?"

Gu Man thought for a moment. "He is interesting."

"That is not an answer."

"In Ancient Beast Hall, it is enough."

The elder snorted, but his gaze toward the ruin gate became more serious.

Mo Qingchuan's master listened to his disciple's account with half-closed eyes.

"You traded with him?"

"Yes, Master."

"What did you trade?"

Mo Qingchuan smiled weakly. "A method I could not use for a method that may keep my neck attached."

His master glanced at his cracked lantern pendant. "And now?"

"Now I think I traded with a man whose neck the trial itself found difficult to take."

The old master gave him a long look.

Mo Qingchuan lowered his fan. "That was not a joke."

"I know."

That was why the old master's expression became grave.

The ruin gate trembled once more.

Everyone turned.

For a breath, hope, fear, greed, and killing intent all rose together.

But nothing emerged.

The ancient light at the entrance dimmed.

The formations outside the ruins slowly settled.

The Rivercloud Demon Sealing Ruins did not explain itself.

It never had.

The elders of the major sects began giving orders.

"Seal the injured list."

"Count all marked disciples."

"No one leaves camp without reporting."

"Send message talismans to the outer stations."

"Find every witness who saw Shen Mo inside."

"Do not spread unverified claims."

"Buy the claims before others do."

"Watch Green Bamboo Sect."

"Watch Thousand Leaf Immortal Sect."

"Watch Demon Suppression Temple."

"Watch River Sword Sect."

The last order was spoken in more than one camp.

Because Shen Mo's absence did not belong to one sect.

That was the true change.

Before, his name had moved through scattered ruin passages, temporary camps, and frightened survivors. It had belonged to stories told by people who had seen a black sword, mountain pressure, compensation, blood, and a rogue cultivator who did not lower his head when he should have.

Now his name stood at the center of a missing answer.

And every major sect hated missing answers.

An old elder from a medium sect stood at the edge of the crowd, his hair tied with a cracked jade pin, his robes plain but clean. He had dismissed the earlier rumors of Silent Mountain Sword when they first reached him. Young geniuses rose every year. Dark horses appeared in every ruin. Most burned brightly for a few days, then died under the weight of real powers.

Now he watched the silent ruin gate and did not dismiss anything.

His disciple whispered, "Elder, if he truly did not come out, what does it mean?"

The old elder's eyes remained on the fading light.

For a long time, he said nothing.

Then, very quietly, he spoke.

"If he died, then the place that killed him is worth fearing."

His disciple swallowed.

The elder continued, voice lower still.

"But if he did not die..."

The wind moved through the banners of the sect camps. Thousand Leaf green-white. Heavenly Sword silver. Scarlet Sun red. Demon Suppression gold. Black Tortoise dark mountain-black. Green Bamboo pale green. Dozens of medium and minor sect banners trembled beneath the same sky.

The elder finished softly.

"Then the man we underestimated may have already crossed into a level we cannot easily measure."

No one nearby answered.

They only looked toward the Rivercloud Demon Sealing Ruins.

The gate was silent.

Shen Mo was gone.

And because he was gone, his name began to travel faster than if he had returned standing before them all.
